Cell phones in schools Researchers show in today’s society that there is a higher rate of students having cell phones at school than in prior years. There are many pros and cons to children having cell phones in their possession at school. According to Maya Cohen, a 2010 Pew Research Center found that 65 percent of cell owning teens bring their phones to school despite any bans that may be in place. It is up to the child to know the rules and regulations when carrying a phone at school, and it is the parent’s responsibility to go over the rules of having a phone with their child. Although there are many different opinions amongst adults pertaining to children having cell phones at school, I think we all can agree that they are very necessary in today’s society. One of the biggest pros of allowing your child to carry their phone to school is knowing you will be able to have a constant line of communication. “Student use of cell phone is a new area of concern in today’s schools” (Humble 2011). For parents this is a very important factor in feeling secure in their everyday life. In today’s society, it is comforting for parents knowing that they have access to their child just by a press of a button. Cell phones have features such as location and security, this allows parents to see the exact location of their child throughout the course of the day. Initially, as a parent, the main concern for children is knowing that they are exactly where the need to be. Technology allows
Although phones may be used to help students with work, North Eugene high school should ban phones because how much of a distraction they can be in a classroom. Schools that have banned phone at school, 82% of students have a phone on at school.(Document #3) If North Eugene at least has a policy with not having students bring the phones in class, that will help with test scores and participation in class. “Students with laptops had a lower test result than those without. The reason? They were not paying attention to their teachers. We should expect the same thing from cell phones.” (Document #6) When using technology at school it may help but there also needs to be an extent to where it needs to stop. Phone are not going to help with our
Cell phones cause students to do bad on their work, can enable cheating, and can be distracting. So logically, cell phones should not be allowed in school. Phones can make it harder to get accepted a good college. They can make it to where some students can cheat and not do their own work. Finally, phones can distract students and teacher alike, taking away from learning time. Even though others argue for cell phones, these facts are all true. We live in a world where people are being taken over by phones. Let’s stop it from taking over
It has became very common for kids to have phones. There are young kids that rely on having a phone around to have fun. Teenagers never put their phones down. Students should not be allowed to have phones in elementary and high school.
Did you know 95% of parents agree that allowing their student to bring their cell phones to school enhances their responsibility and teaches a student how to care for something. Cell phones can often time be seen as a dumb gadget we use to kill and time for entertainment purposes but it is far more than that . It must be accepted that cell phones can be used to save lives , to ease the nerves of a loved one , not anger a student , or to even be used as a reward. So instead of being simple minded , there is another big picture being
Technology has been slowly integrated into the classroom for many years now. Some maybe older than others, but they have all seemed to make the learning and teaching process much easier and effective. Computers were introduced to the curriculum to help students better understand data collection, research, and word processing and Power Points were even added to give visuals to lessons. Cell phones on the other hand have been given the cold shoulder, and even completely banned by some schools. According to the article, “Are We Dialing Up Disaster,” by George Engel and Tim Green, eighty-four percent of high school students report to owning a cell phone and that number continues to increase (Engel 39). Because students are distracted
Cell phones should be allowed in school because they can further students ability to learn and/or stay focused. Audrey Watters wrote, “And that’s probably one of the most important observations: Many students already carry a powerful computing device in their pockets, while oftentimes much of the technology hardware at schools is woefully out-of-date.” This is a major reason why cell phones should be allowed in school because in some schools that do not have the most updated technology there students do on their phones. By allowing cell phones in school, students have access to these powerful devices that can be utilized for free while increasing classroom resources. Watters continued to write, “Schools may find they have equipped student
People all around the world have many electronic devices, and there are abundant amounts of freedom that come with them. There are so many different technologies to choose from, but one that seems to be quite common among people of all ages, are cell phones. Such technology is great for many uses, but it is not always appropriate in certain settings. The principal at my school has adopted a new policy that bans the use of cell phones during school hours. I support my principal’s decision. Cell phones can be distractions in many ways to students during school. They can cause conflicts between fellow students and between students and teachers. Allowing cell phones during school hours also basically gives students permission to not pay
These are just a few of the reasons cell phones should not be banned in schools. Indeed, there are downfalls to a cell phones, but they're also good and very useful during school. Like for example in case of emergency, parent wants to check up on their kid, helpful with school work, and lastly electronics are more fun for kids including their own device. If you can't use you cell phone in your school talk to your principal or teachers and state why they should change their mind and maybe you'll change their
The first reason cell phones should be allowed in school is if a student needs to contact someone if they are sick. We should be allowed to call or text are parents if we feel sick. Kids will leave school and not get teachers or students sick. Kids will be able to stay at home so they can get better then come back so they do not miss too many days. If there is a emergency parents might need contact a student or something might happen at school where a student might need to call or text their parent. If kids have a condition of some sort they might need to let their parent know what they need. If students are sick and out of school for a while they should be allowed to make the work up that they missed. If students are sick and text or call someone to come get them that looks good on the school almost like they send people home so others don’t get sick and germs do not
Akers states that students use cell phones to make fun of another or to harass others. Another piece of evidence is from the same article that states a problem is "Secretly taking inappropriate photographs of other students and disturbing them". This information proves how phones shouldn't be allowed because they can be used to make others unwanted, embarrassed, or unsafe within schools. On to the next topic. A second reason why cell phones shouldn't be allowed is because. Students need to understand the rules of having a cell phone in class how they don't need them all the time. Here's a quote from the article "As Schools Lift Bans on Cell Phones, Educators Weigh Pros and Cons" by Kinjo Kiema. ""Don't feel as if because students have the devices they have to be using them all the time," she explains. "They just really need to be careful and thoughtful and take baby steps, and develop a nice protocol and rules and structures for how students physically handle the device in the classroom." The quote explains how students shouldn't always be on there phone to get answer and how they should understand the rules of the classroom about cellphones . A second quote is
The increase of school shootings and threats has encouraged parents to allow their children to carry cell phones to school. Cell phones have successfully been
Should teachers let students have their phone in class? Many don't, currently most teachers do not let students use their devices during class time. In addition Cell Phones have become increasingly popular. According to the Huffington post “Millions more will join the ranks of smartphone users in the years ahead, as the remainder of the 92 percent of American adults who own cell phones upgrade their devices” this article illustrates that many people own cell phones and many more will soon. And most teachers view them as a distraction to the learning environment. However that is incorrect, Cell phones should be allowed in class because they are educational, can be used as tools, and in that could improve their learning. The teachers should let students use their cellphones during class because they can use it for a resource, an emergency, and for overall happiness.
Picture this, there has been a school lockdown, the suspect cut the landlines so no one could call the police for a rescue. However, the suspect was captured by the police much faster than he imagined. The last scene wouldn’t have happened if it was one decade ago, because cell phones were not popular in schools then. When it comes to cell phones, some people think they should not be permitted in schools, and other people think they should be permitted in schools. I agree with the latter opinion for the following reasons: Cell phones are an efficient way to communicate when emergencies occur in school; cell phones can be a great tool for learning during school hours; and the current prohibitive rules on cell phones are merely fruitless
Many teachers believe that cell phones don’t belong in a classroom because there are several disadvantages. An example maybe a student who uses a cell phone in class has no intension in listening or paying attention to the teacher. This student has a short attention span who cares about socializing more than his/her education. Cell phones can be very disruptive; they can invade people’s privacy and can also be used as harassment or bullying. The usage of cell phones is creating a huge problem particularly when they are used in school.
Secondly, it is no doubt that using mobile phones in campuses has many advantages. One reason is that using mobile phones in schools provide a new platform for education systems similarly as laptops, desktops and personal digital assistant (Rankin, 2008). Use mobile phones may help people to download power point slides, take notes, share ideas with others by Bluetooth and research questions on web side etc. Moreover mobile phones are used to check class schedules or take quizzes on the way to schools (Kharif 2008). The other reason is that students may have a good communication with their parents by using mobile phones during school time even for emergency situations. There is two third of parents contact their children during campus time, mainly to awoke them of medical appointments or other commitments. (Beattie, 2009) Consequently, students should be encouraged bring mobile phones to school.
