While researching the profession of certified medical assisting (CMA), I found numerous in depth material regarding the description of certified medical assisting and the requirements needed to obtain a job within healthcare. Much of the material that I used was pulled from my Medical Assisting book and online resources. My goal in this research was to find a better understanding of the entirety of this position and the many benefits of becoming a CMA. Medical assistant’s have many responsibilities such as making appointments, assisting the physician, collecting specimens, and welcoming patients just to name a few. It is expected that medical assistants will be in high demand due to physicians’ practices and healthcare practices needing support personnel that is cross trained in many areas within an office. This career choice gives the opportunity to specialize in a specific area of choice because of the diverse clinical and administrative skills learned in this program. Experience as a medical assistant will depend on the pay, but research shows an average of fifteen dollars an hour in most places. AAMA 2015 Medical Assisting Compensation and Benefits Report computed the pay scale by geographical region and experience and show full comparisons across the country (1). “To qualify as a medical assistant-certified, an individual must complete a medical assisting training program approved by the Health Department, pass a certification exam approved by the Department, and meet any additional requirements imposed by regulations to be developed by the Department”(McCarty). Organizations such as American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) , American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Healthcareer Association (NHA), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), and The National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP) are all working together to insure medical assistants are getting the necessary credentials and continuing education required by federal and state regulations.
