Change of Leadership Style
At the start of the class, I have already developed dominance leadership style that focused on accomplishing results, the bottom line and confidence. During my undergraduate study, I am always the team leader and insist achieving the team’s goals together. I am the kind of leader who always make sure to let team members offer their thoughts and ideas all the time. I am quite emphasis on corporation because I believe noncooperation can lead to an overall failure to achieve the teams’ goal. To make sure that everyone can contribute to the team, I keep giving everyone a chance to participate and come up with their ideas at any time. Besides, it is necessary for me to set up a clear process for team members to share ideas. I always believe that the most effective leadership style is the leadership style that consists of the leader sharing the decision- making abilities with group members by promoting the interests of the group members and by practicing equality.
When I am the team leader, I mainly focus on six traits: Honest, competent, forward- looking, intelligent, straightforward and broad- minded. All team member should be honest with each other. If anyone couldn’t come to the group meeting, you can tell us the reason of absence. But we won’t accept the lie. Two years ago, one of our group members didn’t come to group meeting twice and told us that he was ill. At the first every teammate was worried about his health and told him not to worry
To be a good Team leader I need to learn what types of authority I have. The authority will be followed upon how I carry myself and the way I act along with my duties required of me.
An authoritative leader addresses the end but generally gives workers freedom to innovate, experiment and take risks. The authoritative style works best for organizations that are off track, it helps in creating a new course and fresh long-term vision. The affiliative style strives to keep employees happy to create harmony among. The style has a positive effect on communication. People who like one another a lot talk lot. They share ideas, inspirations leading to flexibility, innovation and risk taking. This style should only be employed when trying to build team harmony. The democratic style allows leaders to build consensus through participation. By spending time getting people’s ideas, a leader is able to build trust, respect and commitment. This style works best when a leader is uncertain about best direction however, it does not make sense if employees are not competent. Pacesetting is a leadership style that expects excellence and self-direction. The leader is obsessive about doing things better and faster, and expects the same of everyone around
Leadership can be defined as the process of identifying a goal, motivating others, and make them to achieve the mutually goals (Giltinane, 2013). According to Humphreys (2002), successful leaders do this by applying their leadership knowledge and skills. A good leadership is not only good at management, but also use different leadership styles in different situations. A successful corporation must has a good leader who have the flexible ability which can provide a suitable leadership to make the company successful. Furthermore, there have no perfect leadership styles in the world. Different leader have different leadership styles which also have the different strengths and weaknesses (Ali & Waqar, 2013). A leader should not hold all the power of leadership to themselves, but give it away to the team, because that is the only way to empower them. A good leader always take the blame, but never takes the credit, he gives that to the team. A team should be working together to achieve the goal while being united, like a family.
Leaders are some of the most influential individuals in any society. They have the ability to influence those around them with various leadership styles including coercive, authoritative, affiliative, democratic, pacesetting, and coaching. Effective leaders consistently adapt to the environment around them to either enhance or correct any situation facing them. Within these leadership styles the most effective style has been considered that of the authoritative style. This style brings individuals together, builds self-confidence, and easily adapts to the environment around it.

The Groups Dynamics of a team can be effected if the category of leadership is not in place. Leadership means “the activity of leading a group of people or an organization or the ability to do this.” In order to be a good leader you must have a strong value that you can give to your team. A good leader must have strong values to pass on to their team. At the top of the teams hierarchy is a leader, so that the leader can put input towards everything the team does, so that the team would be successful because the leader controls and guides the team.
Effective teamwork is dependent on good leadership. In other words there certain characteristics such as the behaviours and qualities of the leader and the behaviours of team member or followers that contributes to the effectiveness of a team. Different leadership theories such as the Trait theory, Situational theory, Behavioural theory, Transformational and Transactional have been develop to describe the different styles of leadership and to identify what makes an effective leader. However, there are certain qualities and behaviours that a team leader must possess in order to create a high performance team. Consequently, the National Health Service (NHS) (2013) has produce a leadership framework which provides nine dimension of leadership behaviours which are essential for being an effective leader. Goleman et al (2002) suggest that effective leadership behaviours include “self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship management and confronting the impossible”. In other words, a team leader has the awareness of his or her own strengths, weaknesses, emotions, beliefs and values and its influences his or her decision making as well as how he or she manages her emotions. In addition he or she has the awareness of the individual team member skills and abilities and therefore is able to delegate certain task to members who are capable as each member of the team has a unique
My leadership style is problem solver; this leadership style offers me the opportunity to utilize the knowledge and experience of my followers. I believe that I am more of this leadership style because I tend to accept input from group members when making decisions and solving problems. I do this because I feel that everyone in the group have something tangible to contribute to the group, and sometimes they might have access to key information that can help in my decision making. I take the information and put them together to use in reaching a decision, because I know that I will have the final say as the leader of the group. I believe that the group is put together
The contents and assignment in this course has helped me understand the various theories of leadership and how different leadership styles can have a negative or positive effect on followers and organizations. The leadership theories helped me understand the concept of leadership better because it educates me on the different leadership options that are available. Leadership and followership is not based on specific characteristics. Leaders must draw from things and approaches to find the right style. A follower’s attitude determines the way a leader leads. According to Johnson (2011) “Being a good follower means ensuring your boss is supported, but only if he is making optimum decisions”.
Finding a leadership style is like finding the dress or suit that fits just right. It may take several attempts, but once you find the one that fits, it is usually the one you will keep. For this class, we were asked to take a 50 question survey from Kent University to help us figure out what type of leadership style fits us best. From the results provided from the test, my leadership style was typed as participative. When reading more about participative leadership, I saw a quote I was able to resonate with completely, “The leader makes the final decision, but the team to contribute to the decision-making process” (How to find, n.d.). This quote made me realized that this type of leadership fit me down to the T. In terms of effective communication, I always make an effort to make sure the listener absolutely understands what I am conveying. By asking questions or bringing up any concerns they might have, I am able to make sure that everyone is on the same page. My job presents several opportunities to help teach and train new operators. By having a participant leadership style, I must ensure new operators know how to work within their position proficiently. As a trainer, I deal with trainees who at times feel overwhelmed with the plethora of information given to them. I find it important to give encouragement and facilitate training when need be. Being a participant leader requires a great of humility: “The leader can 't know everything”
A leader is defined as a person with responsibility to influence one or more followers and directing them to achieve a set objective (Sethuraman, 2014). In order to achieve that set of objectives effortlessly, effectively, and efficiently, the most important and valued trait of a leader is an effective leadership styles. Effective leadership styles are required in every organization at every level to be successful. The success or failure of an organization depends on the quality of leadership particularly on the part of top management. An effective leadership style can be developed on the basis of understanding of the situations (Sethuraman, 2014). Top management should know which leadership style is needed based on the situation to be most effective to gain trust and respect from their employee. There is no single method of influencing the behavior of employees for every situation. The employee’s level of knowledge on the task and can determine which leadership style that will be most effective for the situation. Preparing leaders to lead
At the beginning of the semester I intended to learn about the professional leadership styles. Throughout the course I have not only learned but applied these skills to my daily practice. The class materials were essential in collectively understanding the multi-frame thinking, how we view and respond to things. Greatest tool was having Dr. Olsen use personal experiences to help us understand different driving forces for the organization (size, staff, location, and services), look at other perspectives and not just using our own lenses, and improve our understanding to promote versatility. Having the power points and the book on hand gave me a general outline of the frameworks: structural frame, human resource frame, political frame, and symbolic frame. Great take away from the lectures was going over the traditional management way of thinking and applying an artistic thinking approach to be successful and achieve our goal within an organization. I did find that having stayed on track with the syllabus made the course go smooth with extra time and days to entertain our questions and concerns with any material, and/or class work. Throughout the course I did have trouble more so confusion on the part one case study. As me and my group worked on the case study I seemed confident in what the assignment detailed, but once we discussed it in class I was completely lost. The work we put in was not at all what the professor was looking for and it seemed that we had our
It is known that individuals have different types of leadership styles. Some individuals are more successful when it comes to following others and some individuals are better at leading others. Being a successful individual is not only judged by the actions of completing a task but the ability to lead others.
This is one of the four most effective leadership styles. The cooperative style allows you as a leader for the different needs and goals of the organization, but also to your employees. This technique is primarily intended to motivate and reward team members. This type of leadership encourages each employee to achieve its long-term specific goals and developing plans to help them in their achievements.
