Chapter 10 & 12 of Everyone’s An Author explains to the readers that it’s extremely important for us to choose genres and write a narrative effectively. Genres are kinds of writing. It includes arguments, reports, narratives, reviews, and annotated bibliography that often assigned to students in school. Also, genres are ways of writing and speaking that help people interact, communicate, and work together. In other words, genres reflect the things people do, act, react, and interact in the particular situations. Genres are as flexible and changeable as the human activities they present. It’s vital to know the common features of each genre so that you can use them to help us interpret new social situation. On the other hands, it helps respond to the genre you use appropriately and successfully. Also, genres are adaptable to various situations. A genre needs to be adjusted to suit the new situation when the audience or context are changed. Moreover, genres are always evolving because human activities change over time to suit new social situation and fresh challenge. Likewise, genres are flexible that they evolve across time and in response to shifting cultural contexts. Another great book, the Hobbit is a great example of some of the common archetypes. There are many archetypes covered in this book but some of these archetypes stand out. Unit 8 Essay When reading various amounts of works by other people you will experience different types and genres of writings. When you read different genres of, it may change your point of view (POV). Even reading the same story in a different genre it may change your POV. Most people automatically relate genre to specific forms of entertainment like music or television, but varying forms of writing should be added to that list. In Kerry Dirk article “Navigating Genres”, Dirk elaborates on the true definition of genre and help writers understand how genre is incorporated in all types of writing material. Starting off, he explains how genre can be expanded beyond than what we know and how we write. Using Bitzer to back his thoughts up, he describes how new genres can be created by people. Dirk gave many examples on how genre has no limits, and the ways on how it’s more than conversation of styles; such as a fictitious newspaper using their headlines to show their genre. According to Dirk, two texts may have the same genre but, can also be different. A genre is defined as a specific set of characteristics used for works of literature, music, or films. There are many forms of genres that can be broad or narrow because they have certain characters and plots that makes them unique from others. Some broad literary genres include fiction and nonfiction, and other narrow literary genres include tragedy and poetry. Both fiction and nonfiction appeals to broad audiences because it deepens their understanding of worldviews. On the other hand, a tragedy portrays a series of tragic events that leads to the downfall of the protagonist. The movie The Notebook is a romance drama movie. Some of the plot keywords are second chances, summer love, and promise.
Stories of education depicted in a novel, normally refers to the character’s process as he learns from his experiences; these experiences shaping him to be the person he is at the end of the novel. Bildungsroman, a literary genre, comprises of this, where it is the term describing the process of the character’s psychological and moral growth in the story. Change in character is the most important characteristic of this genre. For the book in which this is being explored is Frankenstein. The story describes the lessons learnt by Victor and the Creature, how their experiences results in their actions in the book, and how all of these finally produced the people that they were at the end of the story.
Genre is known to change discourse by the format the information is presented to the audience (Varela, 2008). It is also a category of composition that is characterized by a particular style, form or content as dictate by Webster Third Dictionary. However Trosborg (n.d) stated that for the past decade, genre identification, classification and description have been scholarly concern. Certain scholars dictate that genre is defined primarily around its basic external criteria such as journals and newspaper discourse while other scholars stand on the opinion that genre can be classify by its communicative purpose, linguistic content and form of role its play in the discourse made (Trosborg, n.d).
The comparisons could kick off with the writer of books and music, but the writer of a novel is called an author and the writer of music is called an artist. Authors try to set the emotion and the story of both. The authors illustrate what the story is coming to be about. They use different techniques and styles to communicate ideas with the reader and the listener. An author can produce material across different genres. For a book the genres are fictional or nonfictional. While the genres of music can be: Rock, Classical, Country, Gospel, Pop, and Jazz.
All novels can be categorized into genres based on their plots and characters. This allows for readers to easily identify a variety of books that they may enjoy due to shared writing styles and story lines. For example, works of historical fiction take place in the past and are based on historical events and attitudes of the time. The novel The Help by Kathryn Stockett is a wonderful example of this genre. It is about a white socialite, Skeeter, who works in secret with the coloured help of Jackson, Mississippi to write a book about work and life from the help’s perspective. Romance works however focus on the relationship between two characters and the journey they go through together. Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell is an excellent example of this genre. It is about two teenagers who are forced to sit together on the school bus. They both have complicated social and home lives but find comfort in each other which quickly leads to a romantic connection. By reading multiple genres, one can see the distinct differences that make them unique while also drawing parallels particularly within the author’s writing style. The genres historical fiction and romance both appeal to the reader's emotions however the stylistic choices create very different final products. Historical fiction and romance genres both focus on characters that are easily identifiable although they vary greatly in terms of plot structure and target audience.
