In chapter nine you get into the development of language and communication skills, which is a difficult concept in the beginning for the mothers and daughters. At first, the mothers and daughters didn’t have the best communication skills due to the conflicts they went through. Although, when it comes to the resolutions of their problems, the mothers use semantics and syntax to give what they say meaning. Their daughters want to understand their mothers, at the same time the mothers want their daughters to understand them. This helps the daughters in many ways due to the fact that they want to feel meaning when their mothers speak instead of dysfunction. Chapter fourteen talks about the context of development that involves family, which is
Chapter eleven presented several skills that can be used to start, build, and maintain interpersonal relationships with people from our daily, professional, and personal lives. I thought that all of the listed skills could be very useful and helpful in an interpersonal relationships but felt that there were a few that aren't really necessary when communicating. In my opinion, social decentering, providing support, and listening actively in order to respond effectively strike me as the most important relationship strategies. I believe that the most valuable skill to have is social decentering because it gives you a better understanding of how others will feel and think. This skill is needed to appropriately adjust you're behavior so that you can effectively communicate with others based on you're knowledge of that specific person. This will allow you to predict that person's behavior and reaction to certain situations.

Another way to be an effective communicator is listening to the client and answering any questions they may have. In an antenatal ward, the clients will have a variation of questions to ask about their unborn child, their pregnancy and complications in labour. Being an effective communicator means that the professional will be able to answer these questions confidently, reliably, and truthfully. Answering the clients’ questions will make them feel more confident and relaxed about their illness and their baby. Effective communication will also be dependent on whether the client is communicating well back.

Communication differences – It is important to know the children in your school well as some may have communication difficulties which are not apparent on first meeting a child. A good example of this is a child who is on the Autistic Spectrum as their interpretation of social situations and abstract language tends to be greatly underdeveloped. You must speak plainly and with no ambiguity so as to no cause confusion. Children with a mild hearing loss may just need you to speak slowly and clearly, a more severe hearing loss may require sign language for effective communication and so it may be necessary to take training in sign language if a child with severe hearing loss is coming to your school. As the client has experienced rejection throughout his life I believe having good communication skills is a must. I think it’s necessary to be mindful of how suggestions are put forward to Tim as it could come across harsh and demeaning. By having active listening skills and asking questions it will be easier to understand the needs and wants Tim is trying to express. Attentive listening and mindful talking are both factors which can affect the level of service given to the client, so it is necessary to make sure that these skills are put to work.
