We were having a tough time during the war, because our father was out fighting. One day, we got a letter in the mail from the Western Union. It read: We regret to inform you STOP that Charles Mayfield, Sr. STOP has been killed. We all looked at each other in silence as our eyes started to get wet. The cons outnumbered the pros in the months directly after the war.
4 months later, the war ends. Oh, sorry. Where are my manners? I am Charles Mayfield, Jr., son of Charles, Sr. and Helen. I am 15 years old, with a 9 year old brother named George, and a 3 year old brother named John. We live in Boston, Massachusetts, where I work in a factory, even harder now that Pa is dead. Anyway, everyone is excited that the killing has ceased, but there is

“Hey buddy!” I exclaim, excited to see my little brother.
“Hewo Charwi,” he squeals. He doesn’t know how to pronounce “Charlie,” so that’s what he calls me.
Right then, George comes running out of his room and gives me a huge hug.
“I missed you, Charlie!” he shouts. He is the only person I know who calls me Charlie, if you don’t count the “Charwi” from John.
“Hey George!” I cry, equally excited. “How was school?”
“It was fine. I couldn’t wait to come home to Mommy and John, though.”
“I know how you feel,” I say, recalling my school experience. When I was 13 I dropped out to work for my family, as did most of the boys in my class. George will do the same in a few years.
“Boys, dinner!” Ma yells. We all bound to the dining room, having barely eaten anything all day. We see the same dinner we have every night, lentil soup, but it never gets old. I guess when we’re this hungry anything tastes good. We say grace and dig in, although we are still a little sad because of Pa’s death. After dinner, we all gather around the radio and listen to the latest news. Then we hit the hay after a long day, ready to do the same thing
It was now the sunday morning of December 7, 1941, where many military personnel had a time of leisure. Many of them either were still sleeping, in halls eating breakfast, or getting ready for church. I who had been in the mess hall having breakfast sat with a group of men, enjoying a warm bowl of oatmeal and coffee. As I took a sip of coffee I felt all my muscles awaken and gain strength ready for what this day would bring me. It was just another day of work, or that is what we all thought. The hall was full of cheerful men laughing, talking, and eating. All of a sudden we heard the sounds of planes racing through the thick air, and the crowd of people grew silent. I looked around as everyones faces grew with fear and confusion, as they ran outside to see what was going on.

Experiences in war and the drastic change in everyday life from home versus in war can take a large toll on soldiers. One of the most significant impacts war has on soldiers is the detrimental cutting of ties between soldiers relations with their home lives once they return from war. In the book All Quiet On the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, several symbols including butterflies, potato pancakes, and books are used to express the cut ties between soldiers and their home lives.

There are very few novels that truly exemplify the events that took place along this front. Erich Maria Remarque’s novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, Displays important themes, imagery, and symbolism, that help show how this great war affected the soldiers, the countries involved and the world.

World War I took a devastating toll, not only by dismantling numerous countries economically, but by crippling the millions of dutiful soldiers as well. These soldiers, devoid of any full understanding of the reason for this brutal war, destroyed their entire lives for the cause. All Quiet on the Western Front depicts the how World War I ultimately devastated Paul and his soldier friends, psychologically and physically.
He is still a boy, however, he is old enough to be in the military. He was chosen to be a doctor for the union. He scrambles across the field during the battle of Vicksburg. He is looking for the fallen soldiers who need a medic. He has already seen too much gore during this battle. Whenever he goes out looking for someone he never knows if he is going to be shot at. He knows that the Confederate army has a strategy where they shoot the doctors so the soldiers cannot go back into the battle. He had seen many horrors on the battlefield that he would never forget. One time during an amputation, he got so scared he froze up and could not help the other doctor. From that day forward, he no longer amputates the men in agony. Though he was always

About a two years ago America had been dragged into the European conflict called the Great War. The war was like the one the world had never seen, and it war had claimed millions of lives and my brother had been drafted into military service. It had also caused many house wives to work in factories. As I got to 12th St. took a left and headed down Gorman Rd. Which was my least favorite house to deliver to because of the steep hill. I pedaled up the hills, my legs burning, and stopped on the side of the road just halfway up the hill. I wheezed and looked up the rising sun ‘Gotta hurry’ I sighed to myself. I sped up the hill, reached into my bag and threw the paper to the left. I felt the bag and smiled to myself, in the bag an extra newspaper. I smiled to myself and thanked my boss Gerald.
"Dulce et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori" War and an honorable death are portrayed as grand and exalted deeds throughout history, even though a war is a series of bloody conflicts that rack havoc on the human mind. WW1 is one of the prominent examples of this. Several philosophers and individuals have pointed out this fact and even published literary works about it. All Quiet on the Western Front is one of the greatest cases of this because it accurately shows the emotions, living conditions, and hardships of the WW1 soldiers.
Going to war changes a man in many ways. Only the ones who have been to war can know what it is like and anyone who says differently is most definitely wrong. All soldiers, sailors and veterans know that once their time serving their country comes to an end things will never be the same and that fitting in will be nearly impossible. When Paul Baumer returned to his hometown of Duisburg Germany he experienced just that. Through paul's memories of before the war when he was still a normal citizen, you can clearly tell he has changed dramatically. When Paul comes home, he cannot even bring himself to talk about his experiences from the war. During his combat experience Paul must learn not to feel pain, compassion and not to mourn his lost and
After having been in combat during World War I, Erich Maria Remarque was determined to capture the worst horrors of the war in many of his fiction novels, including All Quiet on the Western Front. This novel focuses on the protagonist, Paul Bäumer, and his friends as they face physical and emotional challenges during World War I. As a result of volunteering for the war at eighteen, it seems that Paul’s only role model before the war was his professor in school, who later in the novel can be deemed hypocritical and misleading. His lack of a strong role model or mentor forces Paul to develop his own way in the world after he becomes a soldier. Paul displays qualities exhibited by an honorable role model in the way he continues doing what needs to be done and adapting to life as a German soldier in the midst of World War I, despite his doubts about the war and how his actions ultimately deteriorate him physically and emotionally; a condition which is prevalent in American society amongst
