Introduction— Memory, symbol, and pattern are tools that professors use to analyze literature and draw connections—furthering their understanding of what they are reading. An awareness of patterns makes it easier to read more complicated literature because books fall into similar patterns and become more recognizable and easier to breakdown. If the reader determines the patterns, routines, and archetypes at work in the background of the story, then the complicated plot becomes a little simpler to understand. A great example of this is the play Into the Woods. Into the Woods is a crazy mismatch of multiple fairy tales—the first half of the play is all of the positive aspects of these fairy tales, and the second half of the play is doomsday …show more content…
An example of intertextuality in movies is between Mulan and She’s the Man. In Mulan, Mulan decides to dress up like a man so that she can go to war—in an effort to both help her country and save her family. This similar to She’s the Man because in She’s the Man, Viola loves to play soccer, and when soccer is taken away from her school, she dresses up as her brother and takes his place on the boys’ soccer team. Both girls, Mulan and Viola, dress up as men to pursue a passion, and even though both are ultimately caught, they end up being praised for their courage. Fairy Tales also display intertextuality. For example, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty have extremely similar plots. In both stories, the princesses must escape an evil witch and they end up failing. After being put into a deep sleep, both girls are awakened by a true loves kiss. Furthermore, the witch in both tales ends up dying, and the princesses end up living happily ever after with their prince. The last example of intertextuality is between Teen Beach Movie and High School Musical 1. In Teen Beach Movie, the bikers and surfers are opposing cliques. Lela is the younger sister of Butchy, the leader of the bikers. She falls in love with Tanner, the charming leader of the surfers. In the end, both of the cliques overcome their differences for the sake of love. In High School Musical 1, Troy Bolton is the most popular basketball star at East High, and he falls in love with Gabriella Montez, the smartest girl in school. Even though this love does not stick to the status quo, everyone eventually overcomes his and her differences – just as the bikers and surfers did – for the sake of Troy and Gabriella’s
Inherit the Wind is a play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee that depicts the infamous Scopes Trial. The real names of the persons involved in the case were changed, however, the play recounts the same story. One journalist in the story, E.K. Hornbeck, who is closed-minded, a hypocrite, and very cynical proves that the religious community of Hillsboro is not the only one to be intolerant.
In the book The Body in the Woods by April Henry there is a contrast/contradiction moment where Ruby’s parents don’t allow her to go on the SAR search. The book states that, “Ruby had an excruciating awareness of her own strangeness. No matter how hard she tried, she found it impossible to fit in. Being friends with Alexis had helped.” This shows that Ruby normally doesn’t fit in, but when she joined SAR the only girls were Alexis and her, so she felt she fit in a little bit when she had a friend. Another piece of evidence states that, “ ‘You’ll go to school tomorrow, not the sheriff’s office. And you’ll contact the SAR and tell them you’re going to have to withdraw from the group... Anger made Ruby rigid, locked her rebuttal in her throat.”
In the book “A long walk to water” authored by linda sue park, salva has to go on a personal journey to survive and it impacted him majorly. What is a personal journey? One might ask. Well a personal journey is when someone or something goes on a journey and on their journey they go along and meet allies and friends, they have struggles or obstacles, and they change (mostly in a good way) throughout the story. One lesson this story suggests is that “Sometimes the pain and struggles that you encounter will help you succeed”. In the story “A long walk to water”. Salva went on a personal journey and it impacted him drastically. He had to get away from the war in sudan and he met many people that helped him, he had many conflicts and struggles, and he even witnessed his uncle passing away. But when things were at his worst he found a miracle.
Being able to understand memory, symbol, and pattern in a literary work help to appreciate it and makes it more enjoyable. If someone couldn't understand or recognize these then they could miss some of the bigger points of a story because they could be focused on other things in the story other than what they should be. If you can recognize patterns and other things then you know what to look for and what is important, rather than just hoping to notice it. There have been a lot of novels in which my appreciation for it has risen because I was able to recognize a symbol or pattern. One my favorite ones, however, would probably have to be in Fahrenheit 451 with the destruction of the city and and everything else being compared to a phoenix. Mankind
Authors in many instances use the main elements in the story such as setting and narrative to prove a point in the story. For example, writers often use characters, their actions, and their interaction with other characters to support or prove a theme. In the short story “Our Thirteenth Summer”, Barry Callaghan effectively uses characters to develop the theme that childhood is fragile and easily influenced. One of the ways that Callaghan makes effective use of characters to develop the theme is by describing the tension between Bobbie and his parents. This usage of characters supports the theme because Bobbie’s childhood is no longer free to do what he wishes, but has to bow down to his parents’
Memory, symbol, and pattern affect the reading of literature by making the reader recall information that they have read before and compare the two stories. Memory kicks in when the reader tries to look for similar events from other stories. Symbols fill up many pages in literature and are seen when an object remains its-self while also representing something else. The last of the three main literature analytics is patterns, which is a repeating event that comes out to a similar ending every time.
Alexis’s mother is mentally ill. No one knew until she told Bran. (Bran is one of her friends.) One day her mom and her got into an argument about people watching her. She was off her meds at the time and when She stormed out of the house she didn't take anything, not even her phone or jacket, and she didn't come back home for days at a time. Alexis never gave up looking for her mom. she looked everyday, asked people if they had seen her. She was very persistent.
I was pleased to have attended a lecture cosponsored by the Ethics Center, the Fresno State office of the president, the Fresno Bee and Valley PBS. The lecture began with Dr. Castro recognizing a few leaders on campus, including a past Fresno State president, Dr. John D. Welty and campus volunteer Mary Castro. Dr. Castro then mentioned a few things about Mr. Brooks stating that he is a columnist for the New York Times and an analyst for the PBS “News Hour” and NPR’s “All Things Considered.” Dr. Brooks also teaches at Yale University, one the finest university in the country. Dr. Castro continued by saying that he learned that Mr. Brooks office hours are from 9am to 1pm and how “cool” it sounded to him. I was surprised how many people attended the event. I was fortunate to find a seat. David Brooks mentioned how he has some remote roots in the Central Valley because his father grew in Chowchilla, CA but Mr. Brooks grew in New York.
Jimmy knows too well the agonies of abandonment. First, when his mother, Cecilia, ran away with Richard to pursue a better lifestyle. Then, due to his father’s, Damacio Baca, alcoholisms and violent behavior; he also had to leave Jimmy behind. In spite of the drawbacks from abandonment to being a maximum security prisoner in Arizona State Prison, Jimmy preserver’s the darkness of prison by overcoming his illiteracy. However Cecilia and Damacio is not as fortunate as their child; Cecilia is shot by Richard after confronting him for a divorce and Damacio chokes to death after he is released from the detox center(Baca 263). Therefore the most significant event in this section of the memoir, A Place to Stand by Jimmy Santiago Baca is the death of Jimmy’s parents.
* When reading literature: memory, symbol, and pattern help you understand the text better. If you don’t comprehend literature, then you won’t know the real meaning behind that passage. But that’s why memory, symbol, and pattern come in to help. I think the recognition of patterns make it easier to read complicated literature because then we can analyze what
The recognition of patterns makes it much easier to read complicated literature because recognizing patterns will help you relate two or more pieces of literature together, therefore making it easier to understand and analyze the literature you are focused on. Patterns in literature can help the reader understand plots, settings, themes, and other literary elements. I greatly appreciated the novel, Brave New World because of how different the society in the novel was from the one I live in. Using the Signposts from Notice and Note, I was able to see contrast and contradictions that enhanced my understanding of the book. I noticed how I was expecting Bernard, in Brave New World to be just like everybody else in the novel but instead he was a “normal person” that felt normal human emotions, such as the longing for love, that the other characters just did not feel. He also felt isolated and alone. Bernard thinks in a way we were not expecting. Patterns such as this helped me, the reader, to better understand literary elements.
There are so many T.V. shows to choose from. Nonetheless, we all have our favorites. The Originals is my favorite; it is a supernatural T.V. series on the C.W. television network. I particularly like The Originals because it accurately portrays history, addresses old myths, and shows the importance of strong family values.

Stephan, the son of a big, strong woodsman is depicted as small, weak boy who only desires the acceptance of his father and in becoming a man. Aiden Nowlan’s use of indirect characterization shows clearly that Stephan is not in any shape to handle the violence weather that a woodsman must face, the fact that Stephan has yet to quit proves his desire to become a woodsman like his father. Unfortunately, Stephan has befriended the Polack (Leka), who shows him another path to take, a path that is not cold or silent, but on that involves the mind and emotion. This new path presents Stephan a difficult decision, either conform to the path in which all woodsman follow or be rejected by the group, yet maintaining emotion and warmth through his friendship
Intertextuality is the ongoing interaction between poems and stories over the centuries. An example of intertextuality would be the storylines between Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story. In both written works, the young couple must hide their relationship from their families because their families do not get along with each other. As soon as the false message about Maria's death goes around, Tony kills himself which mimics what occurred once Romeo heard about his beloved Juliet's "death." Another example of intertextuality would be the books Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick and Fallen by Lauren Kate. They both occur in present time with the main protagonist becoming interested with the bad boy at their school. The bad boy is intrigued with
