People never know what they are made out of until they are put to the test. Throughout the novel The Moon Is Down by John Steinbeck, Mayor Orden is put to the ultimate test and finds his true self and what he is capable of when his small town is invaded by Nazis. Mayor Orden is indisputably the main character, he was born to be the mayor of the town and no one would ever challenge his role.
In the beginning of the book, Mayor Orden was very wise and unselfish, he always tried to do what was best for the town; the reader could tell he was capable to run the town from the beginning of the book. Early on in the book, Mayor Orden says to Colonel "Sir, I am of this people, and yet I don't know what they will do. My people have elected me. They made me and they can unmake me. Perhaps they will if they think I have gone over to you. I just don't know”. Colonel wants the people to work in the mines but Mayor Orden tries to defend his people and says they will not want to. Orden also thinks the townspeople will think he's gone over to the opposing side if he starts listening and obeying what they are telling him to do. It's obvious to the reader that Mayor Orden thinks about the town before he makes decisions. In chapter two, Orden says “You won't believe this, but it is true: authority is in the town. I don't know how or why, but it is so. This means we cannot act as quickly as you can, but when a direction is set, we all act together." Orden never put on a show for anyone, from
How do the traditional gender roles we put on people in the 20th century affect how women and men see themselves now and during the 1940’s through the 1950’s. During World War Two tend to think of only men serving when that was actually not the case in World War Two ” some 350,00 women served in the armed forces.” In City of Thieves by David Benioff Vika,Kolya, and Lev all serve in non traditional roles. In City of Thieves the theme of masculinity and femininity plays a prevalent role in Levs feelings towards being a ‘real man’, Vika’s non traditional female role and Koylas masculinity throughout the novel.
I like living in the forest. I don’t know where else I’d live, but I don’t wanna be by myself. We were always by ourselves. We didn’t ever see anybody except Mr.Abroscotto.” This quote shows how Moon is developing through the story. That is how the main character is developed through the story and how the main character interacts with the other characters.
Through thick and thin bestfriends are always there for eachother. In the novel The Contender Alfred Brooks struggles to become a contender and reunite with his best friend James. Alfred is a high school dropout and has a job at a grocery store that’s going nowhere. James, his best friend is also a high school dropout but he is messing with the wrong crew. Throughout the story, Alfred begins to train at Donatelli’s gym to become a boxer. Later in the story James, who has been doing drugs, goes to rob the Epstein's store , where Alfred works, and almost gets caught. At the end of the story Alfred finds James in a cave with a cut arm that was caused by the burglary. James asks Alfred for a fix but Alfred, the contender, takes him to the hospital
The final way that Laertes acts as a foil to Hamlet occurs once again when Claudius and Laertes are discussing Laertes’ actions to achieve his vengeance. Claudius gives Laertes advice saying, “That we would do/ we should do when we would; for this ‘would’/ changes” (4.7.134-136). Claudius is warning Laertes that if he waits long enough, he will probably end up not doing anything at all and will not achieve his goal of vengeance. This quote spoken by Claudius is quite similar to when King Hamlet’s ghost meets with Hamlet earlier in the play to warn him about how he was killed by Claudius and that he must get revenge. King Hamlet’s ghost also warns Hamlet saying, “Taint not thy mind” (1.5.92), telling him to not over think his plan because otherwise he will not pursue his vengeance. After Claudius warns Laertes to not get side tracked, the audience is reminded of King Hamlet’s ghost telling Hamlet to not over think because then their plans will not be pursued. This scene acts as a foil towards Hamlet because soon after the conversation, Laertes does pursue his plan of seeking vengeance, whereas Hamlet has been working on his plan the whole play, and has still not started to execute it.
Throughout history, pride and determination have motivated people to do amazing things. In The Devil in the White City, Erik Larson proves that pride and determination aided the creation of The World’s Columbian Exposition.
The Moon Is Down by John Steinbeck shows human spirit in the townspeople rebelling against the invaders. Because of the invaders taking over the small town, the townspeople change how they think and their actions. The actions of the people are more intense when Alex Morden kills an officer of the invaders, goes to trial and is executed. Mayor Orden says to Alex before he is executed, “Your private anger was the beginning of a public anger” (Steinbeck 54). This trial and execution changes in many ways the actions of the people. The people start to gather weapons and start to kill more soldiers. They also destroy train tracks, start avalanches, and weaken bridges. Mayor Orden describes to his peers what the spirit of man does when it has been surrendered. Orden states, “... I think that all invaded people want to resist. We are disarmed; our spirits and bodies aren’t enough. A spirit of a disarmed man sinks,” (Steinbeck 83). Mayor Orden wants to resist, and he will never actually surrender his small town; he wants to fight back just like how Antigone fought against the law.
Which one between John Turner and Robert Johnson will succeed? Why will either Turner or Johnson make it and the other not make it?

The Palace Thief, a short story written by Ethan Canin, explains the bond through the narrator communications. The interactions with the characters demonstrate the character's personalities, experiences and the family shapes of individuals selfhood. The narrator of the story mainly focuses on the twist of an individual character. In this essay, I'm going to go over the relationships and correlations of characters William Hundert (Mr. Hundert), the three-year teacher at St. Benedict Academy, Charles Ellebry, who went against Mr. Hundert for teaching duties, Sedgewick Bell, who was a very clever student, and Senator Bell, who was a powerful demagogue.
The intersection of Maribel’s and Mayor’s lives is significant to both of them for various reasons. Mayor gives Maribel someone to talk to and have a friend that would have her back through it all as well as allowing her to escape from her usual life and the boring schedule that she has been accustomed to. Mayor soon becomes protective of Maribel as she is more susceptible to bullies, like Garrett who tried to sexually assault her, because of her injury. When Mayor saw Maribel at the gas station, it was love at first sight for him mostly for her beauty but also because they were both viewed as ‘outsiders’ in America. He tries to protect her from the evil in the world around her and make sure she is happy and comfortable. He gains a friend from

Throughout the book, The Chosen, there are four major qualifying characters for the role of “The Chosen One”. David Malter is the father of Reuven Malter, and is an active Zionist. Reb Saunders is the father of Danny Saunders, and doesn’t talk to his son with the hopes of teaching him compassion. Reuven is Danny’s friend, and is a bridge among all the characters. Danny becomes friends with Reuven after hitting him in the eye with a softball, and also works with David in the library in secrecy. While all these characters have major roles, only one can be crowned with the winning title. Reuven Malter is “the chosen one”. Through the development of the character, Reuven, we see a sheltered young boy learn to find compassion in his heart all
I am not sure if this chapter really related to anything in the current news but I know for a fact that many people go through the racist encounters that Mayor faces. In this chapter Garrett stands as an example of how some people view Mexicans. He makes the assumption that Mayor is Mexican because of his appearance when really he has never even been to Mexico. Being Mexican myself I can kind of relate to this chapter because I have encountered similar situations in which I am not considered American. Not only that but when Mayor’s father talks on the phone with his friend from Mexico, they assume that Enrique expects to be treated differently and with more respect since he has been living in America.
