For the Family Health assignment, my partner assigned was Cole Hornbrook. We’ve known each other since elementary school, but we’ve always sat on the far opposite sides of the room and minded our own businesses in all the classes we’ve had together. I don’t think we’ve actually had a whole conversation face-to-face with each other, so this analysis should be interesting in finally getting to know each other after all those years. Denver and Colorado Springs are Colorado’s two largest cities with populations close to 600,000 and 416,000 respectively as of 2010. Both of these cities have seen significant population growth since 1980, however, the two cities have radically different racial makeups as a result of this growth. In Denver, the Hispanic population grew by nearly 100,000 people while the Non-Hispanic Black population was relatively stagnant over the 4 decades and the Non-Hispanic White population dipped from approximately 326,000 to nearly 288,000 for 2 decades before returning to over 313,000 in 2010. Over the same timeframe, Colorado Springs saw a marked growth in the Non-Hispanic White population from close to 180,000 people in 1980 to nearly 300,000 in 2010

In comparison to individuals in couples who were not in mixed relationships, persons in mixed unions were younger, did better socio-economically and were more likely to live in large census metropolitan areas. In addition, for the visible minority population, there were more partners in mixed unions who were Canadian-born in comparison to those who were born outside of Canada, and the quantity increased with generation status. I found my situation very thought-provoking that my family fell within the “51%” of African American kids that were raised by a single mother. Additionally, it was even more interesting that I fell within the “390,000” of black American male that is in an interracial relationship. Furthermore, Black Demographics (n.d.) states that “while black men marry white women at twice the rate of Black women, only 7% of married Black men had White (non-Hispanic) spouses in 2014. About 14% percent of African American men married non-Black or Hispanic women in 2014. It is Asian women who have the highest rates of intermarriage which is twice that of Black men”. As a result, the interracial relationship between black and white Americans has held strong.

Using the 2008 Cooperative Congressional Election Study (CCES), Whites’ attitudes towards dating, cohabiting with, marrying, and having children with African Americans and Asian Americans was studied. It was found that 29% of White respondents reject all kinds of relationships with African Americans and Asian Americans, while 31% endorse them. Second, Whites are less willing to marry and start a family within an interracial relationship than to date interracially. These attitudes and behaviors are related to political conservatism, age, gender, education, and region. When looking at how Rochester, MN compares the others city in the state of Minnesota, I chose to compare Rochester, MN to one city with a smaller population and one city that is more than twice its size. When comparing Rochester that the smaller city of Duluth, MN. Duluth has higher percentage of the white alone race at 90.38% and for the American Indian and Alaska native of 2.47% and two or more races of 3.05%. However, Duluth had a lower percentage of Black or African American at 2.30% along with, Asian alone at 1.5%. When looking at the ethnicity and the gender populations of both Rochester, MN and Duluth, MN, they both are very close to the same with the ethnicity is around 94% and the male population both are at 48% and the female population

In a survey conducted in 2014 it was found that there are 107 million unmarried people living in the United States. Fifty three percent of the individuals polled, of 18 years of age and above were female, the remaining 47 percent were males. Sixty three percent of the individuals surveyed had never been married before, twenty four percent were divorced, and the other thirteen percent were widowed. The total percentage of singles who were polled who had completed their high school degree or more education, were 87%. Twenty percent of singles polled had received a bachelor’s degree or more (Census, 2015). People of color compose 23% of the unmarried population, while whites composed the other 77%. Lewis and Ford begin by pointing out the Civil Rights movement that began in the 1960’s which acted as a jumpstart to the more diverse institution that we now know today. The article conveys that although there is a significant difference between interracial marriage and interracial dating – there has been a tremendous increase in both in the past several decades. A study and chart done by the U.S Census Bureau in 2004 shows, that there was a 26% increase of White/Other marriages from the 1980’s to the 1990’s; where in the 1990’s to the 2000’s there was a significant 72% increase. The chart also shows a drop in interracial marriages where Black/White marriages from the 1980’s to the 1990’s was 38% to a smaller 31% from the 1990’s to the 2000’s. The chart seems to show a significant trend in dating habits over the last few years, which is something that I was not expecting to see.

The law forbidding interracial marriage was terminated in 1967, and in the midst of rapid racial change, one fact is unmistakable: A growing number of Americans are showing that we all can get along by forming relationships and families that cross all color lines. In the past couple decades, the number of interracial marriages has increased dramatically. Interracial dating and marrying is described as the dating or marrying of two people of different races, and it is becoming much more common to do so. Thirty years ago, only one in every 100 children born in the United States was of mixed race. Today, the number is one in 19. In some states, such as California and Washington, the number is closer to one in 10 (Melting Pot).
