This paper researches what Teatro Campesino collaboration process response is, how it responds to its environment, with a special focus on contemporary urban culture, practicing radical inclusion theatre, and activation of a space into a performance stage. I argue that the activist aesthetics have been transcending its functions, evolving into a new theatrical organism. This paper analyzes books, articles, and it includes a study with all artists who are part of the exhibition, as well as interviews with various scholars.
Chapter five in the book, From Indians to Chicanos, by James Diego focusses on the how the breakup and transformation of the social order happen. There are three subtopics that the chapter covers. The subtopics are the contact enlightenment, the conflict that occurred because they wanted independence and the change that happen when they experimentation on the nationalism. These three things were important because they had to do a lot with how the breakup and transformation of the social order happened.
“I'm not Mexican. I am not American. I am not American in USA and Mexican in Mexico. I am Chicano everywhere. I do not have to assimilate anything. I have my own history”, stated the writer and novelist Carlos Fuentes. The Chicano subculture is the mixture of the Mexican and the American cultures. This subculture has its own history and unique characterizations that make it stand out. According to the Merriam Webster dictonary the word subculture is defined as “a group that has beliefs and behaviors that are different from the main groups within a culture or society”. The Chicano subculture has a history, language, leaders, art, literature, and even their music, and it’s the perfect example for this definition of the word subculture.
In our society today, culture is not what it used to be hundreds of years ago. There is no more “pure” culture. Our culture today is enriched with many different traditions and customs that are being shared and adopted. Due to emigration and immigration, a variety of diverse customs, beliefs, and knowledge moved with every exiting and entering human being. Thus, changing and shaping the culture of many. Throughout the world, the beliefs and religious views of culture are dissimilar around the world. By taking the time to read, listen and learn about certain people’s culture, there will be knowledge and understanding that will be gained.
Latinos rather than Hispanic-Americans will be used in this entry since the former term is considered as more inclusive. Latinos refer to people living in the United States, who originally were from Spanish- and Portuguese speaking countries in Latin America as well as Spain and Portugal. The term Hispanics refers to people from Spanish speaking countries, which would encompass Latin America (except for Brazil where Portuguese is the predominant language) and Spain. “Hispanic” is a term used in the United States, which originated in 1980 with the U.S. Census Bureau. This term is not used in Latin America and Spain.
Many ethnic groups have the fear that their children will lose their culture. Many countries have the fear that the immigrants will destroy their country. White Teeth reminds me of the book The Latino Threat by Leo Chavez that wrote about how the Latinos are a threat to the United States but at the end Latinos actually assimilate to the country and its culture. The more a person assimilated to the culture of others the most prosperous the person is, studies have showed. Samad and Alsana are are afraid their children will assimilate to the english culture and have different religious beliefs. During the late sixties and early seventies, a Mexican - American movement was taking place in the United States, The Chicano movement. This movement takes place because of the Mexican American society 's suppression in the country. Indeed, during the years, 1966 to 1981 was a period where the Mexican American society was looking for equality and justice from the Government of the United States. In fact, they will start to organize their own communities, where the Government will accept their new ideas. David Montejano, “a historian and sociologist, and Professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of California, Berkeley,” wrote about that movement that helps the Mexican - American society being part of the United States. One of his books is Anglos and Mexicans in the Making of Texas, 1836-1986, where he describes the relation that the Anglo and the Mexican American people have in those years. In the same way, he wrote Quixote’s Soldiers: A local history of the Chicano Movement, 1966 - 1981, where he describes the Chicano movement as a way of helping the Mexican American community. By describing the Chicano Movement and the political changes made in San Antonio, Montejano relates the problems of equality and justice, the organization created at that time, and the consequences of this movement.
In the early sixties, when times were of segregation, racism and discrimination, Chicanos often suffered the most. It was a dark time for Mexican-Americans, who were negatively referred as ‘Chicanos’. Chicanos did not always have the empowered meaning it has today. In the early sixties, ‘Chicano’ was often used to refer to Mexican-Americans’ as lower class, ignorant and as a derogatory racial identification. Furthermore, racism, exploitation, inequality, conformity and assimilation were all main factors of the early sixties liberal agenda. Chicanos often faced numerous struggles as Mexican-Americans were often exploited profoundly in the workplace. Along with being exploited, Chicanos often face new threats like being fired, pay cuts, and ultimately deportation due racism. Anglo societies were advanced due to the inequalities Chicanos faced from education system and workplace. In addition, Chicanos who were proud to be ‘brown’ or embraced their culture, and practice their norms were often seen as outcast. The sixties main focus of the liberal agenda was to conform the Mexican-American. The liberal agenda attempt to make Chicanos deny their culture and assimilate to the Anglo culture. However, Chicanos often did not assimilate and conform. Chicanos often displayed their pride by dressing in their zoot zoot attires, speaking their language and embracing their culture. As a way to fight back, Chicanos embraced their culture in their music
A cultural analysis is a combination of many elements. Cultures have traditions, customs, habits, beliefs, practices, and values. Each culture can have different traditions in their own essence. These traditions can come from their ancestors ' and passed down the generations. However, some people don’t like to continue their ancestors traditions and adapt others customs from another culture. The culture change depending on the time and place. The enrichment of cultures consists of adaptation and acceptance of another culture 's beliefs. Not all of the people can tolerate other cultures, traditions, languages or stereotypes. Cultures attack or support other cultural values The Mexican culture is hard-working and are strict in their values and traditions. The power and oppression of the cultures are current; social and economic conditions in the people in cultures. The Mexican culture has social and economic conditions oppressed by the power of its Government. In the play “Los Vendidos” Luis Valdez, talks about the multiple accent and background of Mexican people.
To understand Chicanos, it is necessary to comprehend their Mexican roots. The Spanish interrupted the evolution of indigenous lifestyles and fashioned a colonial empire that remade the land, people, and culture. Spanish architecture, religion, language, and other institutions and practices were glorified as Indian culture was degraded, but many changes led to a new Mexican culture. New foods, religious beliefs and practices, social customs and cultural traditions arose and evolved. It also left a socio-psychological heritage in which skin color became associated with feelings of inferiority and superiority, with those who have whiter skin being privileged. Whether a person appears to be white or dark, still is significant among Mexicans as well as Chicanos. Could this possibly
Gary Soto attempts to make it understandable, in his short story “Like Mexicans,” that a person’s race is not what defines them completely. Soto married Carolyn, a Japanese woman, after having claimed that he would only marry a woman of Mexican descent. Soto’s best friend Scott highly disagreed with Soto’s decision in being with Carolyn. He felt Carolyn was too good for Soto, and therefore this false assumption brought Soto down and distorted his thoughts on race and economic status. The essay by Gary Soto was well-written because it can be highly relatable to one’s life, especially to someone who is of Hispanic descent.

The main culture I will be talking about today in my interviews is the Mexican culture. The Latino culture contains many sub cultures including many South American countries and Central America. This will be an in depth interview of Mexican culture, but it is only a small fraction compared to the amount of different cultures we have in our country today.
Growing up has not been easy, but it’s a part of life we all go through, Like in the Disney Movie Meet the Robinsons you need to “Keep Moving Forward”. In Life we have to take challenging Obstacle courses that are not so easy but it helps us in life. One challenging obstacle course that we take is school, to be exact High school. In high school to get to the top you have to fail because from failing you learn, because you learn from your mistakes and “Keep Moving Forward” and you do your best to do a better job the next time. From success not so much because you are not learning anything out of it. Vista del lago students are required to learn special goals known as Expected school- wide learning Results known as (ESLRS).
This is a narrative of one Mexican American woman’s experiences and her views on the importance of passing down the cultural beliefs of her ancestors. In the section of the country in which I live there is a large population within the community of Mexican American culture. Although I have frequent contact with people of Mexican American heritage either through employment or interaction out in the community, I have a limited understanding of their culture. For this reason, I chose to learn more about the population of people I have frequent contact with and as a professional work with as clients in the field of mental health counseling. The quest of finding someone knowledgeable to discuss the population, their cultural background and some of their necessities, as well as some past experiences, led me towards contacting a church. This took calling two different churches before the person at the second church informed me that I needed to speak with, Mrs. Socorro Garcia head of their Hispanic Ministries. Unfortunately, Mrs. Garcia was on vacation when I called, but I was able to speak with her over the phone the following week, setting up an interview in person at her office a couple days later. This was a relief because I was becoming concerned about locating someone for a personal interview.
Throughout the years, women’s participation has been overlooked by the general public, where their contributions to civil rights movements has been belittled or removed from history all together. Their hard work is often accredited to men, where women are forced to remain silent and oppressed - all while depicted as unintelligent second-class citizens who belong in the kitchen in both the Latino community and the Anglo community. The Chicano Movement itself is a gendered movement, in which only men have portrayed as leader of El Moviemnto where whenever one googles the term ‘Chicano Movement’ the images that come up are of Cesar Chavez, Rodolfo Gonzalez or Jose Angel Gutierrez – all men. In the 1960s, the image of the Soldaderas was adopted by the Chicana feminists’ movement as a symbol of revolutionary womanhood and female resistance. Curanderismo is based on a set of values, underlying beliefs, often unconscious, notions of disease causation and cure. Curanderismo is syncretic and holistic; it is a mixture of beliefs derived from Aztec, Spanish, spiritualistic, homeopathic and modern, “scientific” medicine. (Maudro). The Curanderismo is a folk healer with the ability to both diagnose illness and provide therapeutic, psychological realm as well as the supernatural realm. They are also able to link the positive spirits in healing patients.
