Children’s Miracle Network, headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, was formed in 1983 by Marie Osmond, John Schneider, Mick Shannon and Joe Lake as what started out as a Telethon. The company then quickly expanded into a major non-profit organization. Throughout the late 20th century, CMN employed multiple fundraising tactics and acquired various corporate and celebrity sponsors (About Us, 2016). Since 1983, CMN has raised over $5 billion to aid over 170 children’s hospitals, support research, help families financially and generate awareness (Financials, 2016). CMN governance consist of President and CEO John Lauck, a 17-member board, and 155 paid staff members (Charity Report - Children 's Miracle Network, 2016). In 2014, employment costs totaled $16,882,159 (Audit, 2014). As defined in CMN’s 2014 audit, partnering hospitals (170 hospitals as of 2016) must pay a membership fee and license in order to participate in fundraising and awareness campaigns. The Angel Network is a national effort to encourage viewers to make charitable contributions and to do volunteer work (Lowe 180). The Angel Network has helped educate, clothe, feed, and provide shelter for the children of Africa. During her travels to Africa, Oprah has provided the children with items such as books and clothing. Thanks to viewer’s generosity, over 16,000 children will receive the uniforms they need to go to school (Oprah.com Live Your Best Life). Also, the network has rewarded single, working mothers struggling to provide for their children. For example, due to the lack of transportation, one mother was awarded a brand new caravan for her and her children. Another accomplishment of the network has been helping the tsunami victims in Asia. After the tsunami caused mass destruction, Oprah’s Angel Network has responded by raising money to send to the people of Asia. Moreover, Oprah’s Angel Network has teamed up with three worldwide relief and development organizations that will be working in the area of Arugam Bay and the town of Pavolli, Sri Lanka and is donating $1 million to help (Oprah.com Live Your Best Life). Even with an average of 7,800 patients a year and a 1.8 million daily operating cost, parents never pay anything for their child’s stay (StJude.org). Each year, students orchestrate THON, a Penn State student-led philanthropic organization that raises money for Four Diamonds and Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. Throughout the year, students coordinate fundraisers and a 46-hour dance marathon to cover costs that insurance companies will not cover and attain funding for pediatric cancer research. At Penn State, I intend to be a part of this phenomenal organization. Within THON, I plan to continue my leadership through becoming a committee member. St. Jude’s target for marketing fundraising is far larger than most charities. Their target; preschoolers, professionals, 8th graders and 80 year olds, television, radio, local drives, school drives, trike-a-thons, math-a-thons, local, county, state and national events. Some of the big ones that you may be familiar with; the “Dream Home Giveaway”, the “Thanks and Giving Campaign” and the radio-a-thon “Country Cares”. Because of last year’s St. Jude’s NFL event, 18% of American’s said they planned to support St. Jude’s “Thanks and Giving Campaign” during this past holiday season. No opportunity is turned away.

With multiple funding and aiding organizations, Toys for Tots is able to get its job done every single year. Organizations like the Department of Health and Human Services aid the foundation in raising awareness (Toys). With allies such as these; the foundation has a far reach to accomplish its goal of good will. Fundraising groups like SaveWealth aid the foundation by raising money so the foundation has more resources to accomplish its tasks. With more resources, more kids have a smile on their face for the holidays. It’s not only big companies that are involved though; the little guy makes a huge difference as well.

In order to give back to the communities in which they reside, the company started the AMC Cares Charitable Fund.
