Teaching Methods
Introduction
Choosing the correct teaching method is important to help the learner retain and learn information in an effective and efficient way. Tobacco use is a health related topic that needs further education and intervention from a nurse. When selecting two teaching methods that are of interest to me, which would be beneficial to use when educating a small group of five people about this health-related topic are group discussion and demonstration and return demonstration. Group discussion involves the deliverance of medical information or education to a small group of individuals which may include their family so information, opinions can be exchanged with the nurse. This is simple way to deliver information to more than one person at one time if time management is a concern, and the nurse is able to build trust and rapport with the group as a whole. Demonstration and return demonstration works more effectively in a small group and involves education or teaching with the nurse and learner(s). This method also allows time for feedback from both parties. The nurse gives the learner a demonstration of a task to perform and the learner has to attempt to carry out the task back showing competence, and the nurse is on standby to give cues as needed.
Group discussions Group discussions are beneficial as this teaching method is useful as it allows the learners to share information about their personal experiences and is both economically and
|With group learning, peer assessment can also be utilised which can be a valuable tool. Some learners will respond better to feedback |
How can I use my preferred learning style to my advantage at school (especially in subjects I find challenging)?
6. Group study is extremely useful because discussions will help make the material and concepts easier to remember and deepen your understanding. You will be asked to work in small groups in class—take advantage of this learning opportunity!
This is important for those students are they can contribute when they are comfortable sharing personal experiences and beliefs and when they are comfortable to use the English language thus avoiding confrontation with the teacher. For students that have difficult behaviour the intention of using class discussion to provide a space where they can learn to empathise with other people in the classroom and engage with the discussion as an outlet for their need of attention. Class discussions are used widely because they can provide benefits on so many different levels for classroom management and for differentiation.
Which one is better and why? If I had to pick which is better it would be the group discussion as it allows room to socialize, gather different views from different cultural backgrounds, gather resources and opinions and it promotes feeling of belonging. The self-instruction is also great but I would be more concern with isolation and procrastination.
Generally group learning is cost effective for employers, employees/learners and providers. Enabling continued and multi use of materials, resources and facilities. Group learning also ensures a consistent, common message and programme.
When teachers have the opportunity to work with students in smaller groups they can provide extended intensive lessons in addition to whole group instruction. The study showed that when children receive information in whole group instruction and then the information is reinforced in small group instruction they build a stronger vocabulary, and they are able to retell more facts. Overall, this study creates awareness of the benefits of small group instruction.
During the group discussions it helped me earn feedback from my different peers in the class and view the different thoughts and ideas that my fellow classmates had. When writing an essay, having different classmates review my work and give feedback helped me learn more about myself and other people. It helped me learn that people will always have a different point of view when it comes to writing, and I also learned that peer reviews are a precise and beneficial way of showing different ideas and showing mistakes that I made in my essay. This also contributed to my overall improvements of
Since everyone has strengths and weaknesses, members of the group can gain new perspectives and learn from each other. Each group member has different qualities and ideas to offer to the study group. If students study by themselves, they will only get one perspective, yet in groups, they can receive various viewpoints, which can further develop their critical thinking skills. Also, it is often quite hard to understand every detail of lectures and assigned work when doing self-study, so studying in a group with other students can help to fill in the gaps of material that may have been missed. Along with that, speaking out loud in a group can help strengthen these learning gaps. By trying to explain something to someone else, members can reinforce the concepts, therefore making information easier to recall in the future. Also, listening and asking questions can provide more food for thought, along with strengthening communication skills. Moreover, study groups can provide students an opportunity to learn and strengthen their
To support a child to the fullest with a learning ability, you must maintain specific teaching strategies that are accommodated and appropriate, therefore providing the child with extra time for reading and writing will help. Provide the child with a variety of letters and numbers, so the child can see what they look like to perform the task, provide the child with correct answer to the problem for demonstration, as a model to gain some understanding of the assignments. Make sure to make accommodations for work assignments, by allowing oral reports, video presentation, cassette tapes, posters etc., to support child learning
While working on the discussion posts, I am able to exchange my thoughts with other peers in the course. I believe that exchanging thoughts is extremely important for us since we are allowed to learn from others’ perspectives. Particularly, I feel like the group share section allows us to expand our understanding of how to be more responsible to a group or a community since we need to decide who is going to do the group post biweekly, and the designated person for that week needs to get thing done on time in order to get points for other group members.
No teachers are similar as well as no students learn in the same way. Every teacher has their own unique teaching style which is based on their educational philosophy, their classroom’s demographic, what subject area they teach, and the school’s mission statement. Up until now, teachers are looking for a system that will engage students in the educational process and will develop the students’ critical thinking skills. Moreover, teachers want the classroom to be in order and in control, but they also want their students to appreciate the learning procedure. These teaching styles can be divided into two approaches – the teacher-centered and learner-centered.
Christina shared the last article that we will look at and it was called “Elementary-Aged Students’ Perceptions Regarding Appropriate Instructional Practices in Physical Education.” With PE being looked at as “glorified recess or playtime,” by not only parents, but the public as a whole; it is easy to understand why people don’t see a benefit in offering students PE as a class (Barney, 2014). Therefore, it is important to point out the benefits of PE to help reassure those who are skeptical about it. This article explains the importance of teaching in a way that allows students to grow, to learn and to understand underlining goals, especially at a young age. 2,479 elementary students 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders (1,277 males and 1,202 females)
Furthermore, as I read the assigned articles and viewed videos, I realized that my teachers obviously, followed Piaget’s, Vygotsky. Dewey, and Bruner constructivist view because they used the theory of assimilation and accommodation, e.g., the learning of a new experience and changing of a person’s worldview. I also discovered after deep reflection on this week’s assignment, how much of an impact my teachers had on my teaching style. Before retiring, I taught based on what my students needed. Therefore, much of my teaching mixed the theories of, Constructivism, Social Constructivism and Cognitive-Behavioral depending on the student.
1. The main goal of the analysis being conducted is to assess whether the new curriculum on basic electricity in basic science yields better achievement outcomes compared to the existing curriculum, which is a more traditional teaching approach, for elementary school students in both urban and suburban schools. In doing this analysis some questions that will be key to this study is to reveal if this new curriculum is beneficial when compared to the traditional teaching approach. Indeed, some students are randomly assigned to both the new curriculum and to the traditional teaching approach. As a result, through this randomization biases will be kept from occurring. This investigation is important because it will be determined what yielded better results through focusing on examining differences in the posttest variable for children who did or did not experience the new curriculum.
