Standardization is depicted in Christus Spohn in several ways for instance through policies, procedures, processes etc. The problem faced by the institution, that is, staffing is directly related to the above mentioned aspects of standardization. Using Abraham Maslow’s Need Hierarchy Theory one is able to make an analysis between the problem of staffing and various aspects of standardization in the Christus Spohn case. The ethical theory that underpins one’s perspective on nursing staff shortage is the utilitarianism theory since staffing of the healthcare facilities would lead to the greatest good for the greatest number of people. It would be important to put into place measures that bring little harm to the fewest people. As an advocate of utilitarianism, one would like to see the consequences that result from the actions of the policymakers rather than goodwill towards other people. The utilitarianism theory assists in decision-making regarding public policy development. As such, policymakers’ presumed goal that whatever money is appropriated will further the general good of society.
Staffing needs affect the nursing department’s budget, staff productivity, the quality of care provided to patients and even the retention of nurses (Jooste, 2013). The nurse manager has to explain to the management of the benefits of change in providing adequate staffing all the time. Adequate staffing helps staff retention. Staff retention saves a lot of money in terms of orienting new people to the unit. Safe staffing always helps in the reduction of falls, infection rates, pressure ulcers, decrease hospital stays and death. Flexible and creative scheduling is essential for retaining staff and promoting a positive work climate (Grohar-Murray & Langan, 2011). 2) Frame the right problem-The issue is that our department is staffing inappropriately. Our busiest days are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday averaging forty patients per day. However, only four nurses are scheduled on our busiest days.
