Introduction (what is tonsillitis?)
Tonsillitis is inflammation and tenderness of the tonsils. The tonsils service the immune system to shield the body from infections that may penetrate through the mouth. There are three types: acute tonsillitis, sub-acute tonsillitis and chronic tonsillitis.
Acute tonsillitis.
The three characteristic causes are;
• Bacteria being strptoccal or hemophilus bacteria.
• Viruses for example being adenovirus or Epstein-Barr virus, which can also cause mononucleosis.
• Diphtheria, which is a serious disease that forms a false membrane in the throat.
The symptoms for acute tonsillitis are, a very fast and sever sore throat that worsens over time, moderate to high fever, difficulty in swallowing, red, oversized

The symptoms for chronic tonsillitis are:
• Swollen and mildly red tonsils
• Slightly enlarged lymph nodes that are not commonly delicate
• Sore throat that is on and off
What are the symptoms for tonsillitis?
There are many symptoms and ways to find out whether you have tonsillitis such as, yellow or white spots of puss around your tonsils, an extremely sore throat, red swollen tonsils or raised glands (two raised lumps on your throat), pain in your neck or ears, headaches/ migraines, tiredness, fever of (38.5 degrees or higher), a sharp razor blade feeling when you swallow, chills and a scratchy voice. With young children you may even notice an inadequacy of appetite and an elevated irritability.
What is the cure for tonsillitis?
The medicines used for tonsillitis is an antibiotic, commonly amoxicillin or penicillin, these are to fight tonsillitis provoked by strep bacteria. However tonsillitis caused by strep bacteria, will generally go away by itself. The antibiotic is only used to avoid complications, like rheumatic fever, that can result from unattended strep
Tonsil stones appear when leftover food particles, bacteria, dead skin cells and mucus accumulate and form deposits in the tonsil crypts. The color of the tonsil stones can be yellow or white. Meanwhile, the texture is squishy and soft. Tonsil stones can cause other heath issues, such as breathing problems, bad breath, problems when swallowing food and irritation of the throat.
Streptococcus pharyngitis is a bacterial infection of the throat caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, also known as group A Streptococcus. It can causes throat pain, difficulty with swallowing, red and swollen tonsils which can be accompanied with white patches or streaks of pus, red spots on the palate, swollen lymph glands in the neck, fever, headache, rash, stomach ache, and fatigue. It can lead to more serious conditions such as scarlet fever, inflammation of the kidneys, and rheumatic fever. When Streptococcus pharyngitis is suspected, usually a rapid antigen test is run but a throat culture also needs to be done. Treatment is usually Penicillin and Amoxicillin for children. Nursing intervention for Streptococcus pharyngitis is to make sure the patient gets plenty of rest and also to push fluids to keep the back of the throat lubricated and to prevent dehydration (http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/strep-throat/basics/definition/con-20022811).
Acute tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils secondary to an infectious process causing painful swallowing and is more commonly attributed to a viral cause rather than bacterial (Shepherd, 2013). A physical assessment of the tonsils may reveal an increase in size with edema and erythema. This is often associated with upper respiratory symptoms like, headache and cough (Shepherd, 2013). Another diagnosis is pharyngitis. Pharyngitis is also a sore throat which is secondary to inflammation noted at the back of the throat and associated with complaints of pain when swallowing (Shepherd, 2013). Viral pharyngitis is the most common and can be contributed to the rhino or coronavirus which lasts between 5-7 days and presents with associated symptoms like cough, headache, fatigue and mild fever (Ruppert & Fay, 2015). Finally, GABHS or more commonly noted as strep throat is a potential diagnosis. This bacterial infection is most common in children and adolescents. Often individuals present with symptoms including throat pain, fever, chills, headache, cervical lymphadenopathy and exudate noted to tonsils or in the pharyngeal (Ruppert & Fay, 2015). This infectious process in younger children may also present with gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain but is not accompanied by cough or nasal
The main symptom of bursitis is pain and flushed skin color in the areas that are experiencing inflammation. This pain usually worsens when the body is moving or having pressure. In addition to the pain, the area affected by bursitis will also feels stiff and swollen.
Some of the more common signs and symptoms of strep throat may include things such as red and swollen tonsils. When a doctor looks at the back of your throat, he may also see pus filled patches on the tonsils. Do to the infection and your body trying to fight it off you may start to run a fever and have headaches. Your Lymph nodes in the neck will feel swollen and you may have difficulty swallowing. In some cases people have had a rash appear as well as fell sick to their stomach. It is likely to have what you perceive to be the signs and symptoms of strep throat and not actually have it.
he bacterial infection called strep throat is an infection that causes lots of inflammation, swelling, and pain inside the throat and also tonsils. This
Common symptoms usually include a high fever that begins suddenly, muscle and body aches, chills, tiredness, joint pain (usually knees), sore throat, dry cough, a runny and or stuffy nose, are the most common
Tonsillitis can be described as the inflammation of the non-encapsulated lymphoid structures, lingual and palatine tonsils. These lymphoid tissues are part of the immune system and are the first line of defence against pathogens in the oral cavity. The palatine and lingual tonsils are located underneath the stratified squamous epithelial mucosa of the tongue and oropharynx. The tonsils’ response to bacterial or viral infections of the epithelial mucosa, e.g. streptococci and the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), is inflammation and enlargement of the tonsils and antibody responses, largely IgA. Symptoms of tonsillitis include Sore throat and fever.
Furthermore, others signs such as fever, chills, muscle aches, cough, congestion, runny nose, headaches and fatigue, specific to that disease. On the other hand, the doctor by precaution, needed to monitor the most common secondary infection, with influenza which is bacterial pneumonia, also called bacterial sinusitis or bacterial otitis, but he did not show any significant consolidated inflammation suggestive that. The treatment is some rest and fluid to let the body fight the infection on its own. Over the counter anti-inflammatory pain relievers may help with the symptoms, and Oseltamivir
A two-year-old girl Jennifer seems to have to suffer from strep throat. Strep throat is a common type of infection in children, and the clinical manifestation is presented in the throat and tonsils (Centers for Disease Control ({CDC], 2015). All the symptoms that Jennifer is showing indicate that she has a throat infection, and as a result developed Tonsillitis, because tonsils are a part of lymph nodes that fight infection. The pathophysiology of tonsillitis is linked to inflammation of the tonsils in response to infection by viruses or bacteria. The typical signs and symptoms of tonsillitis are swollen tonsils, white or yellow patches on the tonsils, fever, malaise, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes in the neck, and painful swallowing.
For some reason my sister also gets strep a lot, they told us it was due to eating a lot of ice. My sister also has never had tonsillitis. While doing research I found that Strep and tonsillitis both are an infection causing the throat to become sore. The only real difference is with strep the patient will experience sever soreness to their throat. With tonsillitis the tonsils are inflamed and strep it‘s a specific bacteria that also inflame the throat. I’ve attached a great article on the difference between the two
• Have family members who also have a sore throat or fever go to a doctor.
Patient reports sore throat for the past 3 to 4 weeks, Patient states the pain is sever and it is difficult to swallow. Patient reports ome fever. Denies
sore throat and swollen glands. It can also reason a fever and chills. Diptheria creates a toxin
Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, with particular reference to the palatine tonsils , two ovoid bodies of about 2,5 - 3,5 cm in length and two in width consist of lymphoid tissue and placed at the sides of the throat, immediately behind and above the base of the tongue. The tonsils are exposed to inflammation, usually viral, bacterial, more rarely, resulting in enlargement of themselves and with referred pain in the throat and in some cases ear.
