A Tale of Two Men (The Murder Mystery of Love)
The story, “Chronicle of a Death Foretold”, is Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s murder mystery that doubles as a love story. Its mysterious language, gory imagery, touching ending, and sporadic hints of magical realism make this a unique story. It also addresses themes and values such as honor, violence, and love. An overlooked theme in this story is the symmetry that Marquez used when building his characters. For example, Pedro and Pablo Vicario, who are the murderers of Santiago Nasar. However, they aren’t the only two symmetrical characters in the book. Santiago Nasar and Bayardo San Roman are the most symmetrical characters in the short story. Marquez makes their similarities very subtle but the symmetry in both characters are intended by Marquez to show that Santiago Nasar has split personality disorder and his alter-ego is Bayardo San Roman but Santiago must die so that the story can proceed as planned.
Marquez never directly claims that Bayardo and Santiago are the same person but he uses mysterious descriptions to try and challenge the reader to figure out his true intentions. For example, he makes both characters mysterious when compared to the rest of the characters in the story. Bayardo is described as a rich outsider that showed up to the town out of nowhere. His background is mysterious and the townspeople consider him a foreigner like Santiago Nasar, who was born there but is of a different race. Although, Nasar lived
