As said by music artist Jay-Z “As kids we didn't complain about being poor; we talked about how rich we were going to be and made moves to get the lifestyle we aspired to by any means we could. And as soon as we had a little money, we were eager to show it.” I believe that J.K. Rowling, Jay-Z and Chris Rock all have overcome circumstances that people didn’t think they would. I believe success can be measured in a person by how much he sacrifices to reach his goals, how hard he works, and how he overcomes difficult circumstances.

Whether you are successful or not depends on what the definition of success is to you. Not everyone has the same perspective. Do you find your happiness in how much money you make or do you find it in your moral surroundings? Many people have it easy; they grow up in a nice, wealthy family and are looked upon as “better than”, even if they are not the best type of personality to be around. Others, however, have a much more difficult time, being raised by those who do not have as much to offer to their children but offer as much as they possibly can to keep them alive and well. In today’s culture, society, as a whole, brainwashes us into a false perception of success. People with expensive handbags, cars, or jewelry are automatically deemed as a success. Also, people with corporate jobs that hold Chief Executive Operation positions, or a field in general that makes an immense amount of money are considered the successful ones. While a having a great job may be someone’s own personal success, do not let the wealth speak as to why you are successful. Success is not always determined by one’s wealth. As an example, it is already known that celebrities make a vast amount of money. When we review their success, we look at their accomplishments, and how hard they have worked to get to their ultimate goal, not how much money they have ascertained.

Most people in today’s society define success as someone who makes a lot of money or has done something important to help form today’s society. People such as Bill Gates or Donald Trump are considered successful because they have lots of money. Even actors whose lives are wrecked and destroyed are considered successful because of the money they have. Others, like Thomas Edison, are considered successful because of accomplishments they achieved in their lives. Thomas Edison, for example, created the light bulb, so most people would consider him successful. In his book, Think & Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill gives 13 steps on how to have the right mindset, attitude, and ability to become successful.

Success can be defined in many different ways, some define it as being wealthy and stable while some say it is meeting goals. I define successes as doing what makes you happy. I came up with my definition of successes from inspiration of a homeless man. Anyone who sees someone homeless automatically see them as either a disgrace, or just feel sorry for them. As for myself, I always felt bad for them thinking they must want to give anything to be able to go back and change their action that led them to their downfall. Nowadays, mass media are telling people that a successful person should have a good relationship with family members, have a wonderful body, have a nice car, and have a big house. Although in real life, tons of successful people are not like what the media described what they should be at all. It is a combination of both positive and negative conditioning. Because in order to become a “successful person”, people have to work hard to meet the requirements, this stimulates them to be better. But, success is too limited and narrow according to what media says. People can be successful through many different ways.

Any person who is successful now may not have always been successful from the start, they must have started from the ground up. There are some people who weren’t born into rich families and got success from the name of their family. They would either have grown up up from nothing to owning several homes and cars. While there are others who had some traumatic experience but they were able to conquer it and make a success out of it. Even though some had it easy in life and did not have to work so hard to get to where they are, there are those who did have to work twice as hard to get to where they are now. Just as Oprah Winfrey, who had a some troublesome things going on in her life at a very young age, and having the support that she needed during her mid teenage years to leading to where it helped her go onto to the path with led her to her career later on. Then there is Patricia Martinez, who is a wife and mother of three children and works everyday to help pay for the stuff that they own without hardly ever getting a break. These two people who lived in different ways, and having two completely different kind of success but it’s what they had achieved in during their life. These two people they grew up in a poor social class they showed with hard work they didn’t need to be born into a rich family so that they earn to get to where they are.

People always say that hard working makes people success and there are always examples of how some people reverse their destinies and become successful. In the book The Alchemist, Santiago, a young boy follows his passion and find his treasure. During Santiago’s journey, he encounters difficulties, danger and challenges. But he never gives up, so as expected, he is successful. In reality, Harrison Ford did not start his career until his thirties. J.K. Rowling started writing novels at the age of 31, and now is the most famous female writer. And Ang Lee, who was a jobless house husband, but started being a director when he was 31. All the inspirational stories teach people that people need to have dream, it is never too late and if people work hard enough, he will reach his dream. However, these stories do not tell people how much they need to sacrifice and how little chance they become successful.
