I thought about attending graduate school for Counseling Psychology, but I just was not sure about it. I spoke to a professor in the Counselor Education program at Georgia State University and discussed my interests with her. She suggested I look for a program accredited by Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) School Counseling. D-Met with the patient as she was scheduled for counseling. Upon meeting with the patient, she was clearly upset and was seen mumbling under her breath. When asked if everything is alright, her response was, " I am having shitty day." As this writer and the patient walked down the hall to this writer's office, the patient was heard complaining and using profanity. She was strongly advised to discontinue with her comments in the hallway as it was inappropriate. Then the patient continues to vent until she entered into this writer's office about another staff member; however, her comments were heard, which led to the Clinical Director addressing the matter about the patient's comments being disrespectful and inappropriate in this writer's office.

My Goal is to hopefully help many people during their hardships and their daily life struggle's as a Christian Counselor. As I am motivated to complete my Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology, I have a vision for the calling God has placed in my heart. Believing that I am called to serve others, there are several goals that I plan to achieve with my higher education in counseling psychology. While I complete the graduate program from Trinity Christian College at the end of July of 2017, I plan to pass the National Counselor Examination (NCE) exam in October of 2017 for licensure and certification in the State of Illinois. As a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), I intend to utilize my education in business and accounting experience along with my counseling internship experience to open up a private practice based on counseling, prevention and awareness
When I first enrolled at Montgomery College, I knew that I wanted to pursue higher education but was not sure of what to pursue as a lifelong career. What I did know is that as someone who has struggled with anxiety and felt the stigma of seeking help, I wanted to better understand how I could support people suffering with mental illness. I found myself growingly fascinated with the human mind and the field of psychology, leading me to take relevant courses for the next two years. Connecting with passionate and supportive faculty motivated me to start planning for a career in clinical psychology.
When I was originally starting this class I did not know what to expect the content to cover since Intro to Counseling is such a broad title. I was actually expecting an overview of counseling techniques, and I would not have guessed at all that a good part of the semester would be spent on consulting techniques instead and how to be resilient in the field. I am glad that the class did cover these topics though, because I feel that I now have a solid foundation to build the rest of the information on that I learn during the rest of the program.
Practically, therapy is the process of meeting with a counsellor or psychotherapist for the purpose of resolving problematic behaviours, beliefs, feelings and related physical symptoms (Ulman, 2001). The radical and visionary ideas of Ronald D. Laing that associated with the anti-psychiatry movement challenged the psychoanalysis establishment, clamming that diagnosis was scientifically meaningless (Kotowicz, 1997). Laing (1964) argues that the ‘mad’ were sometimes saner than the ‘normal’ – he believes that the psychotic experiences may have healing dimension, and the psychiatrists are the actual anti-psychiatry as their function has nothing to do with the healing (Laing & Cooper, 1964). Likewise, Arthur W. Comb, was a beacon for humanistic education during the half of the 20th century, believes that the body gets well by itself, propelled by its own basic need (Combs, 1989) (Murray, 1938). He assumes that the doctor could not cure the person, but to create conditions that will make it possible for the drive for fulfilment
In my first six sessions, it seemed to me the mindset of the counselor in the session is one of the tantamount elements in dictating the outcome of the client’s experience. The first session I experienced brought on nervousness and uncertainty which led to insecurity. However, the more time I spent listening to my client the more comfortable I became with the role of counselor. Such feelings of comfort brought with it the ability to be more self-aware and client focused in the session. When I was uncomfortable I asked confusing questions, focused too much on how I looked, and lost the ability to attend to my client. I believe I came into these sessions strong in my nonverbal skills and encouragers. Nevertheless, I struggled with focused counseling, reflection of emotions, and setting goals. Intentionality seems to be significant in the growth process; therefore, one of my first actions in response to these reflections will be to create a plan to address my opportunities for growth.
My grandfather was a colonel in South Vietnam who fought side by side with Americans against the Vietcong during the fall of Saigon circa 1975. GF was very strict and is the authoritarian of the family. Despite his totalitarian attitude toward his children, not many listen to him and astray against his wishes. Until now I do not know why I am not like the rest of my family whom disobeyed GF desires that they all went to college. I am currently the only one that is a college graduate and continue to pursue my master degree. Perhaps my determination and perseverance is what distinguish me from my kinfolks. Further, I cannot be a failure with no status in my family or in society. This triumphant certainly is the strength of my goal to be a counselor.
