When I think of coaching I think of practice planning, game planning, scouting strategizing of offense and defense, choosing my starters, little things like that. All of those ideas are valid, but that’s not the whole picture. There is a lot more to coaching than planning for a practice or a game. Many times a person who would like to coach an interschool athletic team has little or no preparation to teach sports skills and techniques. The only qualifications is often the person’s participation on his or her high school, college, or university’s team, coach of a community youth team or even perhaps as a professional player. While all that experience is valuable in one way or another, it does not constitute an adequate preparation for
In the coaching environment, it is essential for a coach to have values and beliefs as not having them will have a negative impact on their behaviour when dealing with everyone including athletes, parents or other colleagues. A coach plays a huge part in an athlete’s life as they spend a lot of time with them helping to develop and improve their ability and performance levels. It is important that the coaches are able to understand and recognise their own values and be aware of their own beliefs and attitudes, as these can have a major impact on the coaching process.
It is important once you have formalized your coaching philosophy and given it to your athletes, parents and other interested parties, that you review it periodically and make changes if needed. Also it is important for you to keep your current coaching education and use what you learn to improve your philosophy. Study other coaches constantly for better ways to coach without dishonoring your basic personality, habits and ways of coaching.

In Ray's last coaching discussion, he was challenged to increase his focus by not giving in to distractions and taking part in lengthy conversation with others. Ray was able to stay focused and less distracted, yet started to loose focus again towards the end of the year. I again challenge Ray to find ways to remain focused and avoid distractions. I encourage Ray to consider the Dale Carnegie course in the near future.
We as coaches must learn to bridge all the elements around us to make one functioning unit.

Coaching is a complex field to be in, as there are many philosophy’s and approach’s that coaches can have. Being that I lack the experience in the past with actual coaching, I will provide you with my coaching philosophy. This philosophy helps guide my direction, and how to deal with potential issues in my coaching career. My coaching philosophy includes my objectives, beliefs, and my principles when coaching.
When I think of a coaching philosophy I think it should directly reflect on who the coach is as a person. Everything they do as a coach should define who they are as a person and their morals. I think they should want their players to follow those morals and act the way he would want his kids to.
It is also the responsibility of the coach to take their profession out to the marketplace to be known and sought out for services. Another good strategy that Dwight Bain presented in this lecture was the importance of a new coach to maintain their current profession during the transition to a new profession such as

I chose to work with my colleague Christy Davis. Mrs. Davis has been teaching special education for about 10 years. She currently co-teaches in an 8th grade language arts class and she teaches two literacy IMPACT classes. When meeting with Mrs. Davis to implement a literacy strategy with third period language arts class (this is the time I have planning) Christy indicated there was a certain student in the class that she often worked with one on one during the bell ringer activity. The student was reading at BR lexile level which is at the preschool level. Although the student is in 8th grade, he has a severe learning disability that makes reading very difficult. Christy wanted a strategy to work on with the student that she could do during the bell ringer that help him work on phonemic awareness and phonics. I listened to her concerns that she often does not have enough time to work with the student and I tried to paraphrase her concerns and ask what she would like to learn. She indicated a 5 to 10 minute strategy she could work on with the student would serve her purposes best.
