When considering preferred styles of learning, it is probably more helpful to think of learning a range d styles we all have to some degree- “having strength in auditory learning”, for example, rather than “being an auditory learner”. The notion of a person having only one learning style is inappropriate, especially as our knowledge of learning styles is not complete by any means. We need to consider ways of accessing the full range of pupils’ learning strengths.
Studies have shown to better access the full range of learning strengths the educator must know how to identify the main cognitive learning strengths. There are three main cognitive learning strengths: ( Landsberger 2003)
• Visual – Uses visual objects such as graphs, charts, pictures,
Learning style: My learning style is considered to be auditory and kinesthetic. Yes, I prefer learning through listening and making notes at the same time. Being an auditory learner I depend on hearing and speaking as a main way of learning. I also learn from experiments or activity related to what I study in class.
The presenter expresses that learning styles do not enrich learning since learning is actually the same. Learning is stored in terms of memory because of the connections we create along with our own experiences and examples. In the article and video, learning styles were directly tested to see if there was evidence supporting the theory. In the article, three studies were completed in search of evidence that learning styles existed. In the first experiment, Thomas Vandever and Donald Neville (1974) performed an experiment on two hundred and eighty-two students testing the students’ mode of learning in visual, auditory and kinesthetic to learn twelve novel words. Only seventy-two showed a strength or weakness in a mode of learning that was high. Those seventy-two students were further tested in their strength or weakness to conclude that teaching in visual, auditory or kinesthetic was equally successful, and that teaching to the student’s mode of learning did not make a difference. In the second study, Ringler and Smith (1973) completed an experiment on one hundred and twenty-eight students on new vocabulary through auditory, visual, kinesthetic or combined
On the other hand the learning style I use the least is auditory. With auditory learners you learn best through hearing and listening. I can say I agree with this, honestly when it comes to lecture based classes I find myself thinking about something different or thinking how I can teach myself when I get home in a different way. Auditory learners like to listen, so when studying they read their flashcards or notes out loud versus me who has to see the card and try to think back of what I did with my hands that will help me remember
All learners have different learning styles. Using materials at the initial stage of the learning process can highlight preferred styles. Honey and Mumford show four learning styles – activists, theorists, reflectors and pragmatists, while VAK highlights visual, auditory and kinaesthetic preferences.
Fleming (2005) stated that people can be grouped into four styles of learning: (Gravells, 2012), Visual, Aural, Read / Write and Kinaesthetic (VARK), with Honey and Mumford (1992) suggesting that learners are a...
In order to effectively teach students with different learning styles, I will most likely be using this website for ideas. Education.com has everything. They tell you how to know what styles your children are better with and give you some activities that you can use to reach all of those students. On their site, you can find specific activities for any grade, or subject, up through high school. For example, I will be teaching third grade so I would go and look under third grade and then go under whatever subject I need, such as math. Once there, I just scroll through and pick an activity that allows student to interact with each other while practicing the subject and having fun. I can also use
It is practical to assume that students will do better in tasks that reflect their particular style of learning, so knowledge of students’ learning styles, including a variety of tasks will make teaching more inclusive. A learning style questionnaire could be handed out at the start of a course which, once completed will inform the teacher about the learning styles of the students.
i. Understanding the learners learning styles can make my course to be engaging. Flemming (1987) noted three different styles of learning; visual, kinaesthetic and aural. In order to know which method(s) to use to benefit my students the first lesson on my course will centre around discussions on what they already know, the resources they are familiar with, and a learning style questionnaire which will provide me with information on preferred learning styles. Effectiveness can also be enhanced if I adapt my teaching style to give maximum benefit to learners.
“Just as students have different personalities, they also have different ways of learing (Slavin, 107).” Learning styles are another important factor to incorporate when implementing the best learning environment. Learning styles are defined as an individual's mode of gaining knowledge. The most common learning styles addressed are auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. Auditory leaners understand information through hearing. Visual learners need more visual aids in the learning process, such as diagrams, webs, or pictures. Kinesthetic learners learn better by using manipulatives or by being physically involved in the learning process. Learning styles is a piece of the “backbone” of differentiated learning. Both are used to individualize instruction to help students achieve the most success.
After completing the assessment, the inventory concludes that my learning style is predominantly feeling and concrete experiences. For concrete experience, my score of 43 reveals my passion to learn information that I believe is relevant for myself. Subsequently, scoring 34 for active experimentation indicates my preference for applying and testing ideas to understand a concept. Additionally, scoring 25 for reflective observation reveals how I learn concepts through observing others complete a task. Scoring 18 for abstract conceptualization indicates how my learning style does not depend on facts and figure. With all of these learning styles, my graph illustrates strong areas in mode 4 and 1, however, it is immensely low in mode 2 and 1. Overall, my results showcase that I belong in mode 4 learning. The learning style inventory is accurate as it reveals that my strongest learning style is concrete experience. This
A visual learner learning style is when someone needs to visualize stuff to understand what they are learning the best. According to the edutopia website it states that my dominant learning style is a visual learner.
In my school career I have found that there are many different learning styles, and although a person can be more than one, which I happen to think I am, most of us typically are just “one” type of learner. According to the “Learning Style Survey,” my results ended up being a “visual learner,” (Bixler, "Learning Style Inventory"). I found these results to be very accurate. I learned at an early age that I was more of a visual learner, I always needed to look at what I was learning, this gave me a sense of understanding.
In EDCL 5339, Understanding Self, I took the Learning Styles Inventory (LSI). The results showed that my confirmed strengths are Oppositional, Power, Competitive and Perfectionist. I do not demonstrate strong Oppositional self. I tend to keep an open mind and am willing to listen to others’ opinion. Sometimes, I feel I go along with what others want easily. In my close relationships, I am more opinionated than I am with my colleagues. I would like to develop the ability to be more analytical and ask tough questions. I think this is an important skill of a leader. As for my lower Power, Competitive and Perfectionist self, I am content with who I am in those areas. I am a team player and I work well with individuals. I would not want to change a thing. I am not interested in controlling or “one-upping” others. I enjoy working with others and celebrating their achievements, along with mine.
A learning style is an individual's approach to learning based on strengths, weaknesses, and preferences. Knowing yourself as a learner is important if you want to achieve to the best of your ability. When it comes to processing information, your brain is the most important part of your body. There are four different types of learning styles, Visual, Auditory, Read/Write learning and last Kinesthetic. Taking the VARK learning style questionnaire I have come across that I have two learning styles in which I learn best in and that includes Reading and Writing, along with being a Kinesthetic learner. Having a Read and Write learning style means that this preference uses the printed word as the most important way to convey and receive information. The next learning style I achieved high in is Kinesthetic, this preference uses your experiences and the things that are real even when they are shown in pictures and on screens.
After taking the Learning style assessment task, I was placed in the auditory learning style, I was unsure about this style of learning because I have not learnt in auditory ways throughout my learning career, but as I read through the perks that being an auditory learner has, and the characteristics that are associated with it, it made me query my current style of learning.
