Why a nurse? As a little kid, I wondered what would be my purpose in life. As a fourth-grader, I care for all animals (large and small) and thought that, maybe, dog breeding was my future calling. For multiple reasons, this was not the right path for me. In sixth grade, my mother (a registered nurse) suggested that I may want to be part of the nursing community since I have compassion to take care of individuals and families (in addition to animals). My friends also told me that my mother and I are very similar and, jokingly, I replied “me with blonde hair and blue eyes, and my mom with brown hair and brown eyes, similar?”. We do not look alike, but we share many key characteristics, including compassion and caring for others, helping individuals and families in need, being kind to all people, being hardworking and focused on important goals, and solving problems. With these common characteristics, the …show more content…
Volunteering is not a requirement, but through my eyes, volunteering is a way of life. I volunteer at the Anne Arundel Medical Center under the Child Life Specialists on the Pediatric unit. With my experience, I stumbled on my initial interactions, but over time and some persistence, I was more comfortable and helpful to patients, their families, and staff. Everyday was and is different, including painting a patient's nails, walking with patients, cleaning toys, or watching a newborn baby to give the parents a break`. The volunteer work is internally satisfying and this type of atmosphere, including the compassion and caring for others, is the basis of my pursuit to become part of the nursing community. In addition to volunteering, I am employed at Chick-fil-A to pay for some of my college expenses and enjoy serving my community. Similar to my vision, Chick-fil-A wants to be part of their customers' lives and the community they
I am Amanda Selich, 27 years old, and have been living in San Francisco for roughly 10 years. I grew up in the East Bay with my 3 siblings and was raised by a single father. Much of my childhood was spent taking care of my younger siblings. This responsibility was so demanding I was forced to drop out of high school and become their “surrogate mother”. However at the age of 24 I was able to get my GED and finally attend college. In fact this past May I graduated from City College of San Francisco with highest honors in Science and Math.
As of 2008, there were about 753,600 Licensed Practical Nurses and 2,618,700 Registered Nurses in the United States (U.S. Department of Labor, 2010-11). In the year 2018, the LPN employment percentage is expected to rise 21% while the RN rate should be approximately 22% (U.S. Department of Labor, 2010-11). This may not seem that high, but it is, when one considers that the expected employment rate for a Dentist is only expected to be 16% (U.S Department of Labor, 2010-11). Nursing is a highly respected and sought after career because every person that enters this profession is able to make a difference and is needed by the general population for his/her skills and contributions to the medical field. Many things will change in fifteen years. For example, technology will innovate people will grow, we would have made new discoveries, and I will be older. However, I am only 13 years old right now. I live in Tucson, Arizona with my family of seven people. I am a quiet, friendly, and hardworking person. I enjoy reading, listening to music, solving brain teasers, being active, and occasionally writing stories. I do not enjoy waking up early, hurting anyone’s feelings, and sometimes public speaking. I am very good at memorizing and learning things quickly. I can also play piano fairly well, but I prefer to be even better. This is who I am now, but my personality may become different as I get older.

Due to the fact that I have family who are nurses or doctors, I look up to them and how passionate and involved they are with their patients
I did not always want to be a nurse. This may not seem like a good start to this essay, but the road to my nursing career was not smooth. I started out at a private university in rural northern Indiana in hopes of becoming a pharmacist. After two semesters of chemistry, biology, and some liberal arts credits I had a reality check. Did I really want to be behind a microscope or a desk all day?
As a child, I have always been told that becoming a nurse is the ideal job for a Filipino, the only way to be successful. I grew up becoming accustomed to the idea of pursuing myself in the nursing field and potentially succeeding above and beyond far than what I can imagine. I had the thinking style of “If my mom can do, I can do it,” but I want to do something for myself, not from the influence of my mother. I do not want to second guess myself anymore and being part of this program can prove that my passion is my own true calling. I do not want to hear stories from my mom’s experience, but for me to experience and tell my own stories.
A Life of a Nurse Do you ever dream becoming a nurse? Well, as for me, I have been dreaming of becoming a nurse since I was a kid because I grew up in an environment where my relatives’ work is related to the medical field. A nurse’s job is tracking and monitoring patients’ health and progress. Nurses can also give medicines to the patients and they assist the doctor. Nurses in different countries have their own responsibilities.
In the future, I hope to pursue a career related to the brain, preferably neurology or neurosurgery. My father has led a research project on traumatic brain injuries, and from the start, he informed me on every step. His constant updates kept me engaged and invested in his project, and passionately curious about the brain’s myriad of functions This previous school year, I took AP Psychology, which only furthered my interest in the brain. Each day, I looked forward to that class and routinely spent time reading in depth about many of the topics. I am also very passionate about the medical field which most likely stems from having both parents working in the medical field. A series of classes offered at my school have provided me with the unique opportunity to become a certified nursing assistant at the conclusion of the upcoming school year.
I believe that nursing is both and art and a science consisting of psychosocial and biological sciences that work together to continually improve the health care field. I believe that with the knowledge and clinical experience from the TVCC ADN program I will be able to provide the best care possible to the people in the community. As a nurse it is important to carry the attributes of being caring, compassionate, understanding, non judgmental, realistic, open-minded, honest, ethical, and moral. I also feel that it is important to maintain sensitivity to all cultures when providing care.
I was always undecided regarding the career that I wanted to pursue. As I got older and looked at many choices in careers I realized that I wanted to have a career in the medical field. Being a nurse interests me because it requires the study of the human body along with other great opportunities that nurses have in this career. I want to become a nurse because I like being able to help those who are in need.

My aspiration to become a nurse developed during the time of my mother's illness when I observed seeing how the nurses involved treated and cared for her. This really inspired me to pursue a career as a nurse. In the future after completing my degree I plan to enroll in the Royal Air Force (RAF) as a Nursing Officer, I have decided on this career path after talking with members of staff at my squadron who have given me great confidence that this is the right route for me to take as I want to join the RAF as I have a passion to care for those at home and abroad in war zones. My passion for caring for people contributed to the work I have carried out in my local community such as volunteering with the guide dogs and fundraising for charities. Working with the blind and partially sighted was challenging as I wanted to ensure I kept their dignity and respect at all times.
The right career for you may not always present itself when expected. My road to nursing has been full of curves and bumps along the way. However, the personal challenges that I have faced along the way have made me a stronger person; someone who will give much to the healthcare industry. The bachelors of science in nursing program at Loyola University will be an incredible platform to begin this journey.
