College Admissions Essay: A Career In Pharmacy

As a young child, I was always drawn towards the field of health care. I remember reading about the many options that are held within it and wondering what path it would lead me on. Neonatal nursing was something that always came into my mind, but it was often pushed to the side by people and teachers who thought I should become a pediatrician instead. This became a real struggle for me, but as I grew up and began researching and exploring the health care field I came to a decision for myself. I came to the realization that everyone was wrong. My interest in medicine first stemmed from my freshman Biology class and my Nutrition class. I was intrigued by our studies of cells, genetics, and disease. Both courses incited a sense of awe and curiosity within me. Dissecting a frog, was the stepping-stone for my interest in medicine. Seeing the frog's heart made me wonder how the human heart worked. My research into the human heart inspired me to learn more about the medical field. I sought out volunteer opportunities that would give me insight into a doctor’s typical day. During my volunteer experience, I learned that as a doctor you experience many obstacles, including patient compliance and insurance approval issues. In my journey to pursue medicine, I learned that becoming a doctor means more than helping people, it means being the team leader, being compassionate, and most importantly being committed to the patient’s well being.

Everyone desires to feel loved, valued, and appreciated. A career in pharmacy opens a door into the lives of other to make a difference. My intentions, now and as a pharmacist, ensures the value of each person by offering quality patient, guiding them with healthy lifestyle choices, and respecting each individual. Being a pharmacists offers a chance to care for those in need. Opportunities to brighten some one’s day with a listening ear or a smile comes occurs on a daily basis. The medical field is a career path that brings about many options and opportunities of great value. The noble idea of being a doctor tends to cloud the diligent studying and precise training that is actually required for this career. I have wanted to become a doctor since a very young age, and now that the opportunity is here for the taking, I have fully researched what it takes to succeed in this profession and various specialties of the practice. The road to a medical degree is one filled with thousands of notes, years of schooling, and many stressful nights, but the reward is one incomparable to any other. Pharmacy is a prolific field of study that is taking a prime position in the world of academia. It is quite demanding and needs completeness and vigilance. Thus, by going through pre-pharmacy, it will help me reshape my educational and career aspirations by bringing into reality what pharmacy entails through prerequisite coursework. I will also be able to come to terms with what the profession has at the end of the tunnel and asses with it marches my career goals. My passion for medicine is something deeper than a mere interest in learning the extraordinary functions of the human body. I am completely fascinated to learn gross anatomy, histology, pathology, and the complete medical school curriculum. However, I am more captivated by how the knowledge I will gain in medical school will allow me to perform the lifesaving procedures that physicians are able execute. Although, medicine is not always ideally as I have written, I believe that as a physician I would use my knowledge and my experiences to provide the best holistic care to my patients. For as long as I can remember, I have always been interested in pursuing a career in the medical field. These interests were most likely brought to life from my desire to want to help people and learn more about the human body. The experiences I’ve had throughout my life have brought me closer to the belief that I can one day make a difference in the world through medicine. My mother and I were returning from the Doctor’s office after giving a blood test. It felt like the entire world’s weight was balancing on my head, so I volunteered to walk home alone as my mother stopped at the pharmacy to get the required antidote. A few moments later, I open my eyes to see I was lying on the sidewalk and my mother was sprinkling water on my forehead. After this incident, no one – including myself - thought I would ever consider a profession in medicine. Yet, here I am, five years later unable to see myself as any other profession other than a doctor.

The field of medicine, more specifically pediatrics, has always enticed me. The concept of helping people has always been an interest of mine. When I was in the 3rd grade, at the age of 14 my brother passed away from the swine flu; it was one of the worst experiences in my life. Being only nine years old and losing my brother really left a mark on me; I’ve never felt so helpless before. Because of the hurt and pain I felt from his passing, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in medicine. My dream occupation hasn’t changed ever since.

Over the past few weeks I have been researching my interests, values, and goals. Throughout this research a lot of things that were already evident to me, were proven for a fact. On many occasions my personal goals have come before my professional aspirations. A career in the medical field has always been something I have looked forward to. The career that I am interested in pursuing is a Pharmacists. The number one reason I have decided to become a pharmacist is because I want to help and assist others. The satisfaction of me helping a patient get better quickly is the motivation that drives me. The second reason is the act of working with other health care professionals. Pharmacist have to communicate with other professionals as a team to avoid errors. Communication and connection is a major key in today’s society, in which I like with a passion. The big career dream began when my older cousin sister became the first in the family to graduate from college with a college degree. This career goes unnoticed because many do not see the importance of it. Without this field, the balance in the medical community would be disrupted due to patients not receiving their medication to sustain their life. Although this career may seem easy, there are important characteristics one must hold in order to be a successful pharmacist.
