College Athletes Should Get Paid Essay

If you were a college-athlete what would you do if you got paid a tremendous amount of money? Right now, no college athlete are getting paid for their work, but it is a very strong debate going on in the country whether they should or not. Many people believe that since they are spending several hours into their sports, to entertain the world, that they deserve some type of payment. There are several amounts of pros and cons of paying college athletes, and you have to really “dissect” it and imagine about their future. From my standpoint, I believe that college-athletes should not be paid because of the risk of them forgetting about their academics, using their money for non-important items, and because most of them are “technically” getting paid.

Starting off, if college athletes got paid they would look at their “student-athlete career” as more of a job, other than academics and one of their hobbies. To extend off, the people that believe that the athletes should receive payment because of their consistent work, aren’t really thinking about what their purpose is to even be there. Anyone could say or think that “no they aren’t getting paid,” but you have to think about what they are getting in replacement of a check. First payment in my eyes, is that, I quote “The average NCAA athlete on scholarship gets, per year, about $10,000” (http://www.marcusfootball.com). Not to mention the outstandingly-talented students that receive a full-ride (everything paid for). Over the full four years of playing the sport that is saving approximately $40,000. That amount of money is tremendous to families and could be very helpful for them. The other way of payment is all of the popularity and fame they get.
