My father was a 21-year United States Marine veteran. They were my first impression of what I thought my future would be. Being the youngest of four children, I was expected to fall in line behind my siblings when it came to education. I was never pushed to excel in my studies, so I did just enough to get by. For as long as I can remember, college has always been in my future. After realizing that I wanted to be a special education teacher, I started searching for colleges that fit my career plan. I found that Illinois State University was interesting and has an outstanding Special Education Program. I will be attending Illinois State University in 2016 getting a B.A.Degree in Special Education focusing on Severe & Profound population.

Some of the obstacles I may encounter during my college career would be to be in dept., homesickness, and choosing a major. These obstacles may seem like nothing at the moment but once it happens it will be hard but not impossible to accomplish. Some obstacles are different to others because some people don’t get homesickness, or don’t have a problem choosing a major, some come from families that make enough money to pay for tuition so they don’t end up going into dept. like others. But all these obstacles can be solved within time.

Although many people will have different opinions on how to achieve personal success in college and consequently increase student retention, there are effective strategies that are proven to aid in achieving these goals.

It is the dream of everyone to join college with the hope of getting a better tomorrow and a foundation for them to make it in life. However, this may not be the case with some students as this dream may turn into a nightmare. This is because many students fail to go through or others even fail simply because they have not prepared enough; not just academically but also on the personal side.

In conclusion, it is clear that being a good college student is not an easy task. It required good study habit, class attendance, time management and self-discipline. It is not easy but it worth the hard work. Because, as Jerome R. Breitenbach wrote, “the education you receive in college, and the attitude you develop, will guide you for the rest of your life.
