Throughout the film Barrymore used many different camera angles but most common was the technique of panning from the ground following through to the main character’s face. I feel this angle, or shot, was used the most throughout the film and depicts the coming of age of Bliss. The concept of growing up and finding one’s self is portrayed by the camera angle growing from the ground up just as a young adult must do. The scene with Bliss’s boots shows how hard it is for her to be different and not her mother’s dreams. Something as simple as buying boots turns into a life changing moment for Bliss. Although the act of buying the boots was a trivial purchase, this scene opens the world to Bliss as roller derby allows her personal growth by the
The movie Love Actually (2003) by Richard Curtis demonstrates how the connections between people are limitless and that love is a concept that has the ability to lift people up and tear people down. The movie follows the lives of nine different relationships and the audience is able to see every aspect of love, romantic, platonic, familial and more. In an article by Ben Dreyfuss, he points out that most critics of the film point like to say that Love Actually “is a saccharine soulless picture that relies on an emotionally manipulative soundtrack and has nothing to say but somehow takes 136 minutes to say it” (Dreyfuss). However, that is not the case. This movie has had a lot of controversy since the release in 2003. In this paper I
Accepting relationships have the ability to allow individuals in society to deal with their inner conflicts. This establishes the beginning of transformation a feeling of belonging. The film Glory, directed by Edward Zwick, allows the audience to discover the significant American Civil War that raged through America for four years. In 1860 black people were treated unfairly and inhumanely. This film explores this along with the long lasting effects of racism and bigotry on relationships with others and society. Black slaves are freed in america and join the army. In the confrontation scene, Trip and rawlins, two black men from the army, confront each other. Zwick utilises the alternating close ups of the two men to allow the audience to experience the tension between them that enables Trip, the protagonist, to finally deal with his inner conflicts. This tough relationship seen in the colloquial language “But you ain’t gonna be anything to him but a ugly-ass chimp in a blue suit.” elucidates the derogatory reference of a chimp. This allows Trip to realise he is not the only black person treated unfairly, therefore he shouldn't take his inner conflicts out on others. Having relationships like Trips and Rawlins often gives individuals the ability to reflect upon themselves. In the next lake scene, a mid shot of Trip and Robert, the colonel, is utilised by Zwick to display the characters and also the water behind Trip that represents tranquility and the cleansing of his internal
African-Americans who bravely fought the 54th Massachusetts endured a lot of pain and discrimination before the actual battle started. In the movie Glory, it shows us the struggles of Africans-American soldiers who fought for the Union. During that time of the Civil War, the African-Americans who fought experienced racial discrimination and abuse. Despite the racism and abuse that they had experienced, these soldiers still bravely fought for the Union cause.
The movie “Glory” conveys the story of the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the U.S. Civil War. The Regiment was lead by General Robert Gould Shaw, Matthew Broderick, - son of Boston abolitionists. Consisting of freemen from the North and escaped slaves, the Regiment was made up of all black soldiers. At the time, the consensus was that blacks would not make good soldiers or submit to discipline during battle. The soldiers went through intense training and when put to the test, proved themselves worthy of the freedom they fought for and respect from the white soldiers.
The adoption of the Emancipation Proclamation on December 1862 provided the need for free black men as soldiers. Massachusetts would be the first state responding by forming the 54th Regiment. It was the first military unit consisting of all black soldiers to be raised in the North. The formation of the military brought questions and controversies. Many questioned a black man’s ability to fight in the war. Although many were filled with doubts, the men would go on to succeed due to their leader Colonel Robert Gould Shaw who showed everyone that blacks were fighting equals to their white counterparts.
Definitely my favorite movie we have watched for this class this far, Glory, with Denzell Washington and Morgan Freeman, stands high above other civil war movies of its kind. Highlighting the issue of the 54th regiment, the discrimination of the black soldiers was prominent as well as the slow changes Colonel Shaw made to himself and his leadership traits in order to zero out that discrimination. The entire theme of the film seems to be ‘progression’, where, as the characters progress not only as individuals but also as units, the story also progresses from ___ to the goal of nationalism and emancipation. However, this movie does have some historical flaws.
Still no Blaxploitation film can ever reach the success as seen in Mel Brooks’s masterpiece Blazing Saddles. Cleavon Little and even Gene Wilder give an epic performance that most likely would have never been made today era. Cleavon Little stars as Sheriff Bart who was a former railroad work who was about to be hanged, when he is appointed to the town of Rock Ridge. The main villain believed that the town would leave, and his plan to build a railroad through there would work. The opening scene in the film, where Sheriff Bart comes ever so closer to the townspeople is funny. The townspeople have made welcome signs, the band playing, and that guy on the tower is trying to tell the folks he is black is a very classic scene, but still would be

One of my favorite movies of all time is Sweet Home Alabama. This movie came out in the early 2000s starring two of my favorite actors, Reese Witherspoon and Patrick Dempsey. Reese Witherspoon plays an up and rising fashion designer in New York, Melanie Carmichael. Melanie has the perfect life in New York with her career, friends, and boyfriend, Andrew, who happens to be the son of the mayor of New York. But when Andrew proposes to her, Melanie has to face the skeletons in her closet and her past that is awaiting her back down South.
1.0: Introduction The Princess Bride (1987) is an American romantic comedy film co-produced and directed by Rob Reiner. The film is an adaptation of William Goldman’s 1973 novel by the same title. In the film version of this fairytale, the events are presented like a book where an old man –the grandfather is reading the story to his ailing grandson, therefore effectively retaining the very novel’s narrative style (Harpern, 2003). The narration by the grandfather (Peter Falk) elevates a narrative scenario where the audience assumes the position of the grandson (Fred Savage). The Princess Bride epitomizes a true tale of loss, love, treachery, vengeance, miracles, swordfights, and friendship (Johanson, 2006).
An emotive documentary filmed over the course of twelve months, on two phenomenal athletes and their individual stories on and off the bike. Fighting to the top isn’t an easy road it sure becomes a roller coaster for both Sam Willoughby and Alise Post along during their journey to the top.
In the well-known musical Rent, that is set in the 1990s, the story follows a group of penurious and artistic New Yorkers and how they live their lives throughout a whole year. Mark, a blooming filmmaker, struggles to find his place in the world after his girlfriend dumps him; his roommate, Rodger, is a HIV-positive musician and is trying to find out how he will make an impact before he dies, so he brought out his old guitar. Both Mimi and Angel are trying to find love through the harsh reality of being HIV-positive, while still being so young and the successful Joanne seeks faithfulness through her younger, wilder girlfriend Maureen. Throughout the show you get to follow this group’s dreams, losses, and love stories all while they weave together to create a stunningly raw and emotional portrait of what it is like to live in a gritty part of the world with a life taking disease.
“Something was happening, and they thought they knew what it was . . . pop music, pop alienation, a yearning for roots, the last frontier, casual sex, sudden death, crazy kids, Vietnam”. (Hoberman 3 ) As professor Berman also stated there were a lot of things going on around 1960’s and 1970’s that would cause people to rebel, especially the young people. With the post-World War II "baby boom" there were more young people around who was rebelling. Post-war wealth endorsed many of the young generation to be out of focus and control. Rebelliousness started with the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy and it continued with the end of US combat-military involvement in Southeast Asia and the end of the draft. To summarize the 1960’s rebel is the results of some

Ever since the Holocaust happened there has been a variety of movies and books portraying this massive genocide that changed individuals’ lives. One of these movies that portrays the Holocaust is Life is Beautiful that was directed and acted by Roberto Benigni in 1997. This particular film won Oscar awards and it’s unlike any other Holocaust movies because of its drama, romance, and comedic genre.
