“I plan to give members of my committee more control over their initiatives,” I said before the senate body, after my appointment as the new Academic Affairs Committee Chair of the Student Government Association at Seton Hall University. Recorded for posterity in the meeting minutes, my bold idea aimed to spearhead the renaissance of a notoriously ineffective committee.
Headed into my second term as a senator representing the College of Arts and Sciences, I had a new mission. For far too long, the committee had been the butt of jokes among circles within SGA. As a former member of the committee, I knew first hand the origin of the jokes, which centered on the dearth of accomplishments by the group. I recognized my appointment was an opportunity to test the leadership skills I had developed at Seton Hall and personally vowed to remedy the troublesome sentiment among my peers. I had identified a key issue that thwarted the committee’s capacity to effect change - team morale. In order to

Every meeting, the committee shared the highs and lows of current initiatives and offered salient suggestions to remedy small concerns. At the weekly senate meetings what in the past had been brief updates from the committee turned into substantial interventions that kept the senate body engaged. Fellow senators took notice of the committee’s work and its members’ collegiality. I encouraged members of the committee to deliver updates at some meetings to encourage them to assume roles as leaders too. Throughout the semester, I publicly thanked my team for a job well done. Regardless of the project’s outcome, they recognized that they gained useful experience that they could apply in their future endeavors. With that said, the committee accomplishments garnered other committee chairs to inquire about my leadership style; respect for others formed the basis of my
As students, our experiences, ideas and leadership have significantly shaped Heritage into the University it is today. As SGA president, I will enhance this foundation that those before us have worked so tirelessly to create as well as empower our student body to meaningfully contribute in building an even better student experience , promoting new ideas and developing leadership for those to
Our advisory group is composed of all 9th graders and typically meets on Wednesdays during Community Time. We started the year by doing some “get to know each other” activities during our firs few advisory meetings. A favorite among the group was when we filled in a giant chart with each student’s name and the answers to questions about their preferences on many topics. Some of the items recorded were favorite social media, dog or cat person, hero and many others. We will do this each year and compare results over time. Once we got to know each other a little bit, we took some time for introspection and wrote some goals for the year. The students also did a reflection at the end of the first quarter. This reflection along with the goal information
As a committed member of the SGA/Leadership class, I was taught to lead by example. I achieved missions to instill values of integrity, passion, and service as I cooperated that into my school and community. The class handed me the opportunity to host school-sponsored events while giving me a hands-on, authentic opportunity to learn and develop leadership skills for the future and put the skills learned into practice through the coordination of planning and implementing events. I was nominated to chair numerous committees. Through delegating tasks, working tight-knit with others, laying a foundation for rules, integrity, and values, I earned credibility. My leadership skills spoke "do as I do" and not "do what I say" which enabled others
"We believe this organization is the most open, frank, sincere and unbiased group on the campus and to have it continue is our ideal. We know no party lines, we harbor no petty jealousies, we tolerate the indifferent, back the worker, abhor the knocker, and idolize the person who shows that he has the welfare of the University at heart. We idolize him because he possesses these admirable qualities and it matters not to us how he demonstrates it. "In order to keep abreast with the remarkable growth of the school, we believe that the time is ripe for some changes and reforms to take place within the institution but safety and substantial progress does not lie in hysteria and agitation, so we advocate a sane and intelligent appreciation and knowledge of our existing laws, traditions and customs before attempting to improve what now exists. But having a respect for our existing habits and customs that border on veneration, we still believe that academics, athletics, and social conditions can be materially bettered by whole-hearted support and cooperation to the entire University personnel.” (Arizona Daily Wildcat)
I went to the San Bernardino City Unified School District Board meeting that took place on October 3, 2017. In this board meeting, there were a lot of interesting topics that that were discussed. The board members voted on various topics throughout the board meeting, the community could see the members’ votes. This board meeting focused more on High School students rather than on Elementary students.
Since transferring to UB, I have been highly motivated to be make an impact change on this campus. Being an SA Senator gives me the opportunity to not just be a part of positive change but to also make the voice of students louder and heard in the decision-making processes in SA. This position will also enable me to better appreciate the little things in society and also increase my desire to improve the world through my career.
The position of Panhellenic President at Kettering University plays an important role in sorority life by uniting the two chapters here on campus. The president should be able to maintain a neutral and supportive stance on all topics to create a productive counsel. I feel I could play this part to support Sorority Greek life based on my previous positions on campus. As a member of ASA I am currently acting as Standards chair, as part of this role I act as a mediator for concerns within the chapter and determine positive outlets to resolve those concerns. I believe these skills I have learned will aid in my ability to support the council. I have been a member of the Panhel counsel for the past two years and am very familiar with its operations.
As mentioned previously, SGA works closely with two different publics. The first and primary publics are the officers and senators of the association, whereas the second publics consist of the rest of the student body at the University of the Ozarks. The characteristic which differentiate the first from the second public is that senators and officers work as the intermediary between the student body and the Board of Trustee and President. Nonetheless, both persona profiles describe students that are involved in the various campus activities and show interest in the different school related affairs. These types of students do not sit back and blindly accept the changes made on campus, but actively take part in the decisions making role. Although the final decisions or outcomes might not always follow the
What informs the decisions trustees make? What public purposes guide the president, faculty and staff in their daily activities? How would the trustees and the public know that the institution’s resources are strategically arrayed to achieve the goals? Colleges and faculty can too easily be accused of being knee-jerk protectors of the status quo. A robust, shared, operating vision for the college helps to make clear how the public interest, not personal interests, determine the steps that the college
However, during my first two years in high school, I realized that there was an aspect of my academic experience that needed attention. As a member of Class Council, I was disappointed by the lack of diversity in the attendance of the meetings. Each week, a dozen or so of the same students arrived and made decisions that affected the entire student body. If there was one thing I learned during my high school career, it was that diversity is necessary for success. Eager to implement change, I decided that the spring election at the end of my sophomore year was a great
Describe up to three examples of how the advisor contributed to the development of chapter members.
The Board of Directors of Taylor International Academy (hereinafter the “Academy”) established a reauthorization committee prior to the expiration of our charter agreement with Central Michigan University. Tom West and I served on the committee, and after Tom West’s resignation, Dr. Renita Clark served on the committee with me. On or about October 28, 2014, Barbara Zeile of Central Michigan University sent the Academy a letter indicating that “Academy’s academic performance over the course of the initial five-year Contract has remained persistently and unacceptably low.” Any objective board member that reviewed the data with respect to the Academy’s academic performance would agree with Central Michigan University’s assessment. Accordingly, the Academy was tasked with providing Central Michigan University with a plan as to how the academic performance of the school would be improved. My “agenda” was not one of “power”, but rather to create a plan that would improve the academic performance of the school as the academic success of the students of the Academy has always been my top priority. Without such a plan, the Academy risked not having its charter renewed and/or having the charter renewed on less favorable terms to the Academy.
At our gracious university we are given opportunities to become leaders and I have taken full advantage of that. As a leader, I possess qualities such as positivity, creativity, confidence, and commitment. Through my position as an At-Large senator, I am a liaison between students and faculty. This position has allowed me to be the voice of students and has given me the opportunity to reach back out to students and enlighten them on fun events put together by members in the senate and important information regarding our university. I took a leap of faith this past
I’m in AVID council. AVID council is about making the AVID program better, and planning fun things for the students. It’s like the behind the scenes type of thing. I feel like my biggest contribution to the club was the idea to do a generations past AVID t-shirt fashion show for a video that will be presented at the Clark stadium. I was looking at our ideas so far and we had fashion show on there, and I was also thinking about what we would possibly wear. Then I had an idea that we could do different generations of AVID t-shirts, kind of like how Pitch Perfect 2 did it in their final performance.
In the auditorium, Somers' Student Council acted out a short play introducing the theme of the conference "Lead to the Future." After the short play, Somers' Student Council President and New York State Council on Leadership and Student Activities or NYSCLSA President Wesley Cash gave an introductory speech welcoming the councils to his school. After a few minutes, Cash turned the discussion over to Houston Kraft, a motivational
