Throughout the whole world there are world leaders that lead their respected countries into a peaceful era. Presidents, dictators, tsars, monarchs, Kings and queens have been some political leaders that people tend to elect and also look up to for advice and even protection. Even though these figures are known to be very influential in everyday lives, by making decisions that change the face of the world, there are also others that have been known to bring peace to places that others couldn’t do. These are religious leaders such as the Pope, the Dalai Lama, and also God figures have been known throughout history to be the solution of problems where the military, and money cannot solve. The Dalai Lama is known to be the figurehead to Buddhism. The most recognized Dalai Lama’s are probably the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso, and the third Dalai Lama Sonam Gyatso. The 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso states: "From one viewpoint, Buddhism is a religion, from another viewpoint Buddhism is a science of mind and not a religion. Buddhism can be a bridge between these two sides. Therefore, with this conviction I try to have closer ties with scientists, mainly in the fields of cosmology, psychology, neurobiology and physics. In these fields there are insights to share, and to a certain extent we can work together.” Tenzin Gyatso was appointed as the Dalai Lama the age of two, and was formally recognized when he was 15. Tezin Gyatso, the head of state and the spiritual leader of Tibet, was born in Amdo, China on July 6, 1935 into a peasant family. At the age of two, Gyatso was recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, and therefore an incarnation of Avalokitesvara, the Buddha of Compassion. Gyatso’s life as the Dalai Lama began when he was enthroned at the age of four in Lhasa. However his political responsibilities did not arise until 1950 when thousands of soldiers of the People’s Liberation Army invaded Lhasa. In 1959, the Tibetans held the largest demonstration against China’s invasion of their home, therefore declaring Tibet’s already established independence. This was known as the Tibetan National Uprising, which was crushed by the Chinese army. As a result, Gyatso and over 100,000 Tibetans fled across the Himalayas and into India where His Holiness was given political asylum.

Brought up from an unusual childhood, he became head of the state of Tibet at age 16, and was later forced into exile by the Chinese government. Despite all the hardship he had to endure he does not give up his fight for freedom and treats all sentiment beings with love and compassion. This work focuses on the importance of religion in terms of world peace. Both writers, Ven. Master Hsüan Hua and Ven. K. Sri Dhummanada give several reasons why world peace has yet to be achieved, as well as ways in which humankind can reach world peace. Both authors focus on the conflicts present in humankind and offer insight into ways to change that would allow humankind to reach world peace.
