Comparing Emotions: Love and Hate Emotions come with every thought and action that is had throughout the day. Whether it is an emotion towards an academic class, the nerves of meeting someone new, or even what is felt about the day as a whole; there is always an emotion that is being felt. The two most extreme emotions are hate and love. Most sub-emotions come from these two powerful feelings. Anger, happiness, sorrow, and anxiety can all be results of both love and hate. To most, these emotions seem like contradictory ideas. They have obvious differences to make them appear as opposites but, when broken down, they have a lot more in common than accounted for. Hate and love both contain powerful definitions, passionate emotions, artistic expression, cause and effect of one another, and complexity. According to Dictionary.com, the definition of love is “a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person; a feeling of warm personal attachment or deep affection.” When first read, this term can bring ideas of joy and fulfillment. There tend to be a lot more positive associations with love because of what has been told through movies, society, and personal experience. It is not always realized that many negativities, such as sadness and anger, can be associated with love as well. Hate, on the other hand, is defined by Dictionary.com as “to dislike intensely or passionately; to feel extreme aversion for.” However, when the word hate is mentioned, it does not have the
Have you ever felt the feeling of butterflies in your stomach or heard the phrase “my heart skipped a beat for you”? As children, we grew up learning from our elders and experiencing new beginnings in life. Much of our knowledge has been brought upon by what we see and hear, rather of what we know. Many important decisions we make in our life has to do with what our feelings show us. Love is an important matter in our life because it motivates us in different ways. Love can be shown through emotions or even through actions. What is a valuable definition of love? A brief definition of love can be said to be a variety of different feelings or attitudes that ranges from interpersonal affection to pleasure. In other words, to me love is when
Love is a variety of different emotional and mental states, typically strongly and positively experienced, that ranges from deepest interpersonal affection to simple pleasure. This value is precious amongst all humans, it is what makes or breaks us. Not only does love remind us of a time that was relevant or memorable,
When I was in the 3rd grade I was walking to my classroom when someone said “I hate you!” I turned around and yelled at the person and said that was not very nice. The dictionary defines “hate” as “to dislike intensely or passionately;feel extreme aversion for or extreme hostility toward.” (Dictionary.com). However, the social meaning is: when you dislike someone/something a lot. (1) The first time the word hate was used was mentioned in religious scriptures like, The Holy Bible, Dhammapada, and the Koran. When people use this word it is usually in a negative
By definition; love is a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person. Love can be interrupted in many ways. Were we ever taught love or is it just a natural feeling towards a person? Some say you'll know the meaning of love when you fall in love, yet some don't believe in love at all.
Love is a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person (Dictionary 1). Love is what is known as the “universal language”. There are so many ways love can be interpreted. The central message that the comfort humans receive, and the shyness they feel for an individual are compartments of love that may not always be touched on in poetry.
Love is classified as the stereotypical eccentric and bubbly emotion with a fairly positive connotation. When you feel love, you feel like you are walking on air and you don’t understand it but all you know is that you are feeling the quintessence of happiness. In a relationship, love makes you feel a oneness with another human being. You feel like you are the only two people in the world and nothing can break it apart. Love can do all these things but it's not all happy. When
The emotions of love and hate are at the forefront of the theme in this play by William Shakespeare. The Oxford Standard English Dictionary defines ‘love’ as ‘to have strong feelings of affection for another adult and be romantically and sexually attracted to them, or to feel great affection for a friend or person in your family’ and defines ‘hate’ as ‘a feeling of dislike so strong that it demands action dislike intensely, to feel antipathy or aversion towards someone or something’. However, words cannot portray such wide and powerful emotions. Love and hate include elements of life, passion, long-term bonding and dislike, disgust and loathing respectively. It is because
Love is a force that inspires us to feel more, do more, and sometimes sacrifice for the object of our attention. Poems, music, relationships are all written in the name of love. There are six kinds of love, according to the ancient Greeks:
Love is virtually a universal emotion. Almost everyone experiences being in love or being loved, and the same thing could be said about hatred. In The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne discusses the similarities between love and hate. He observes that people who are in love and those who hate both feel empty with the absence of their subject of attention. At the end of his book he reflects, “It is a curious subject of observation and inquiry, whether hatred and love be not the same thing at bottom” (236). Hawthorne is referring to the similarities developing between loving and hateful relationships in his story. He thinks that since both require a lot of emotional investment and cause you to focus on a single person, love and hate are at their cores the same.
Love and hate are said to be strong feelings. While this is true, there is still a lot of hate and love in this world. In class, we’ve read two stories set in the 1940’s during the Holocaust. In the articles I’ve read, there are many examples of love and hate. The disheartening thing is, there is more founded examples of hate than there is of love.
Hate is a broad word—you can apply it as a noun or verb. I found this to be rather helpful when looking for references yet difficult when defining it. Although I am not fond of the term, I am lucky that it was given to me. It is such a common word that finding
Love is a feeling between two people that comes with lots of emotions, respect, commitment, trust, honesty, and many other values. In the story The Great
Love is also defined in the dictionary as "strong affection," "warm attachment," and "unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for others" (439). All of these definitions are completely correct, but the dictionary does not explain how it feels to love someone. The reason that an explanation for this feeling is not found in the dictionary may be because love is so different for each individual person. In my experience, "strong affection" does not even begin to cover the sensation and emotions a person feels when he or she is in love. Love is compared to "the extraordinary sun / splashing its light / into astonished trees" in Denise Levertov's "Love Poem" (2-4). Like the sun, love is great and bright and fills a person with extreme joy. Love is greater than anything else a person could ever experience. A lover can even be better than a summer's day, as the speaker in Shakespeare's poem suggests. He compares his lover to a summer's day by saying that she is "more
Love and hate are both very powerful emotions. The abundance one can feel inside when feeling them can be overwhelming at times. I think everyone can relate to the feeling when you love someone so much you would do anything and everything for them. We can also understand that feeling when you can’t even stand the thought of someone being in the same room of you. When we look at what emotion is more powerful, I think hate is stronger than love. The reason being is that love can quickly turn to hate, but hate doesn’t change to love very fast, if at all. I think Othello is a great example of this. His love for his wife, turned to hate so fast because he thought she was cheating on him. He murdered his wife in pure cold blood which shows how hate can be such a powerful emotion that it can actually cause someone to want to commit murder. The feeling of love and hate can change someone, and they both can be very powerful. However, I think that hate is an emotion unlike no other in which the feeling is very stable, in the since that it is very hard to change someone’s mind about you when they hate you.
Love is difficult to define, difficult to measure, and difficult to understand. Love is what great writers write about, great singers sing about, and great philosophers ponder. Love is a powerful emotion, for which there is no wrong definition, for it suits each and every person differently. Whether love is between family, friends, or lovers, it is an overwhelming emotion that can be experienced in many different ways.
