n the short stories “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin and “Popular Mechanics” by Raymond Carver have many similarities and differences. Within both stories there are similarities and differences in conflict, theme, setting, and dialogue. Both stories do a great job of depicting what is going on and the emotion being put into them. Firstly, both stories have a similar conflict that takes place within them. In “The Story of an Hour” written by Kate Chopin and “Popular Mechanics” written by Raymond Carver, there is conflict within relationships. The conflict within “The Story of an Hour” is that the main character in the story learns of the passing of her husband and goes through different emotions of how she feels after hearing of his passing. …show more content…

The setting in “The Story of an Hour” written by Kate Chopin starts out gloomy as the main character hears the news of her husbands passing but takes a turn as she discovers her newfound freedom as an open window is described. The text says, “Into this she sank, pressed down by a physical exhaustion that haunted her body and seemed to reach into her soul” (Choplin 289). This describes the emotions the wife is feeling and her grieving the loss of her husband. The difference between the two stories is that the setting in “Popular Mechanics” stays constant as the argument takes place in a house and the mood is dark the whole time during the story. In ‘The Story of an Hour” the setting stays the same throughout the mood in the story changes as the wife changes her emotions after hearing about the passing of her husband. Lastly, each story contains dialogue between the characters. There is dialogue in “The Story of an Hour” when the main character is communicating with her sister. An example of this dialogue is “ Louise, open the door! I beg; open the door-- you will make yourself ill-- What are you doing, Louise? For heaven's sake, open the
