Abstract The article I read, The relation of depression and anxiety to life-stress and achievement in students, written by Bernice Andrews and John M. Wilding was a study conducted after there was an increase in students seeking mental services. The two decided to research if there was a correlation between an increase in depression and anxiety after starting college and how
The author, Lucy Dwyer, uses data from many professional sources, such as Dr. Sharon Sevier, chair of the board of The American School COunselor Association and counselor at Lafayette High School in St. Louis, and Jason Bradley, counselor at Roseville High School in Northern California, to test their hypothesis that stress and anxiety levels are rising in teenagers. Sevier highlights college’s rising selectivity as a cause of anxiety in teens, along with the rising level of competition that comes with that selectivity. This hypothesis is strongly supported by counselors and nurses across the nation, such as Amber Lutz, counselor at Kirkwood University in St. Louis, and Cindy Zellefrow, a nurse at South-Western City Schools in Grove City, Ohio.
What is the difference between Anxiety and Depression? Truth is depression is a symptom sometimes experienced by people with anxiety disorders, and anxiety is sometimes experienced by people with depression. The person experiencing the depression or anxiety often can tell which came first and which is more dominant. Although there is quite a difference between the two it can sometimes be difficult to determine. There are some common symptoms between those suffering from anxiety and those who suffer from depression. The common symptoms are difficulty concentrating, agitation, fatigue, and difficulty sleeping. Both conditions effect sufferers on a neurological and emotional level. Those who suffer from these conditions
Both depression and anxiety have been known to affect a wide range of individuals and are financially burdening, if not treated appropriately. Additionally, there is a big overlap between depression and anxiety (Ballenger) which makes it more difficult to find the right treatment. Anxiety disorders are characterized by feelings of uneasiness and fear. Examples of anxiety disorders include: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Acute Stress Disorder (ASD), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), panic disorder and social/subject phobia (Ballenger). Benzodiazepines (BZD) are a class of drugs used to treat anxiety disorders ranging from phobias to GAD (Ballenger). Unlike anxiety, depression has different clinical manifestations. It is classified as alterations in mood, loss of interest and feelings of hopelessness, and examples include Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Dysthymia
Depression and anxiety are common disorders often confused with each other, but the two couldn’t be more different. There is a fine line between Anxiety and depression that is often blurred. Although there are many differences between the two, they also share many similarities, which can lead to false diagnoses among patients. It only gets more complicated when both illnesses are present. Anxiety is a mental health disorder described by feelings of worry, anxiety or fear that are strong enough to interfere with one's daily activities. While depression is a mental health disorder defined by persistent depressed mood or loss of interest in activities, causing significant impairment in daily life. While these two definitions are very similar; but Depression is sadness, worthlessness, irritability, and loss of interest in day to day activities. Anxiety and depression are very similar in which they give off the symptoms such as excessive worrying, agitation, and restlessness just to name a few; However, Anxiety is the feeling of nervousness, or powerless, having a sense of impending danger or panic.
Originally I planned to observe a group, which focused or addressed the topic of depression or anxiety. However, when my plans to observe this group fell through I decided to watch a group video dealing with adolescences since this is the population I'd most like to work with in the future. The topic or the focus of the group seemed to be rather broad, with many subjects and sub-subjects being touched on. However, I believe that the main focus on the group was on helping the teens discover and learn about themselves such as things or aspects about themselves that they did like or what they considered their strengths and weakness. After watching the video, I had a difficult time deciding the type of the group, I had a hard time deciding between
One of the most crucial times of one’s life is around age 18, when starting college. This also happens to be the most common time for anxiety and depression issues to start. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 75 percent of all individuals with an anxiety disorder will experience symptoms before age 22 (Tartakovsky). Starting college is practically a whole new world for most young adults, and there are many different factors that can trigger stress and anxiety. Many new students get separation anxiety from being away from home and loved ones, and suddenly being in a whole new environment surrounded by strangers. Not only this, but the added stress of handling a full load of classes, and possibly a job. While a large number
As Mahatma Gandhi said, "Man often becomes what he believes himself to be." Therefore, if you feel that you are a very stressed person or doomed to feel stressed out, then you will likely find ways to manifest that stress through your perception on life. In addition, you won 't even bother to learn how to deal with stress because you won 't believe you can.
Every year, over 360 million people suffer from depression worldwide. In the United States alone, over 40 million people suffer from anxiety disorders. Depression and anxiety disorders are two of the most major conditions that make everyday life difficult for millions of people, as do other disorders like schizophrenia and dementia. Millions of people suffer from depression and anxiety disorders globally, and the number is only rising. This is a problem, because many people do not know the severity of these disorders and do not know how to help those who are dealing with depression and anxiety disorders. If we all learn more about these conditions, it will help better our knowledge about them, and help us bring the number of people suffering from depression and anxiety disorders down. It has been proven that
Throughout my college career, I have experienced both tremendous stress and overwhelming anxiety. This was caused by my heavy workload. I also was involved in several organizations, especially last semester. I was constantly on-the-go, and was barely getting any sleep. This lack of sleep was not due to stress, but because I genuinely had a lot of work to do. I realized I was experiencing tremendous stress and overwhelming anxiety was during exam week during last spring semester. I had over slept and had to rush to finish one of my last papers. I was being really hard on myself and began getting upset. This would turn into a panic attack. After it subsided and was able to relax, I knew I had to find a way start relieving my stress. I have also
The topic I have decided to research and write about is depression and anxiety. I knew right away this was something that I wanted to learn more about. As a psychology major, this is a topic that has always interested me, and it is something that has personally effected my life. Millions of people struggle with these issues; many of them in silence because they are too ashamed to open up about it to others.
The two different mental disorders, anxiety and depression, obtain more in relation everyday. Although each can have different causes and characteristics they share many common ones. Strong links throughcertain illnesses and disorders like asthma and headaches are being configured through specific chemicals in the brain. Two examples being serotonin receptors and corticotropin releasing factor receptor1. Certain combinations of the two can lead to a change in energy leveles causing both anxiety and depression to occur at the same time. Many treatments used for both are also the same, this including some antidepressant medicines.
Anger is a interesting demon I face because while it is not ever directed towards someone else, it is in fact always directed at myself in my moments of self destruction behavior. It often appears in moments of anxiety and stress, which I often seem to experience due to a number of reasons but I'd normally attribute it to my own destructive childhood where it never felt safe. In response to living in such a highly stressful environment, I became used to intense situations and living in a state of 'fight or flight' mode was extremely harmful for my own state of mine. Once I moved out and started living on my own, my body and mind was not used to the normalcy of life thus triggering states of panic was a normal reaction to very normal every day things. This is also called Post-Traumatic-Stress Disorder, which is something something I do have to live with but have accepted it and am now open to talking about.
For the midterm paper I have chosen to discuss the relationship between depression and anxiety in transgender people. For this paper I am using Transgender to mean: “ a term used to describe people whose gender identity differs from the sex the doctor marked on their birth certificate.” (Gladd.org)
As a class the mean for life events stressors was about 323.5 which is very hazardous because previous research suggested that people that scored above 300 on the life events stressors survey are associated with greater risk of infectious diseases such as flu and other stress related psychological symptoms like anxiety. Also one other thing that grabbed my attention was that my scores compared to the class average were high. As we all know stress is a body 's method of reacting to a challenge. According to the stressful event, the body 's way to respond to stress is by sympathetic nervous system activation which results in the fight or flight response. Stress is known to be one of the major causal factors of depression. Large stressors in life, such as divorce or death in the family, are all known to be related to the development of depression in people. Such traumatic or sudden events can place severe stress on a person that can lead to problems such as depression. College requires significantly more effort from students than high school. Once you enroll in a college you will probably find many students are more motivated, your instructors are more demanding, the work is more difficult, and you are expected to be more independent. These higher academic standards and expectations are even more obvious in graduate school. As a result of these new demands, it is common for college students to experience greater levels of stress related to academics. Many students find that
The purpose of the primary study was to determine whether student anxiety and depression increases after college entry, the extent to which adverse life experiences contribute to any increases, and the impact of adversity, anxiety and depression on exam performance (Andrews, & Wilding, 2004).
