While SeaWorld and The Detroit Zoo keep animals captive, there are many positive reasons these places to be around. SeaWorld is known for its big shows to show off the animals of the sea. They put on performances with Sea Lions, Dolphins, and Killer Whales. When SeaWorld first opened they stole Killer Whales from the ocean for their own business sake, but now they are trying to make good of the past by researching Killer Whales health. By researching why they die or what makes them sick they are able to make life better for the Killer Whales they inhabited. Since they can not release the Killer Whales because they've been in captivity for too long, they can create an environment that is best for the Killer Whales. Space is diffidently a problem,
Columbus Zoo is far superior than the Detroit Zoo because of the location, many different exhibits, and Zoombezi Bay. Although each are well-known Zoos, Columbus is visited by five times as many people each year, year-round. Similarities are both Detroit and Columbus Zoos have a lot of the same animals, a famous train ride, 4-D theaters, and also different places to eat with dining plans. Both zoos are open year round, and have current discount rates for winter though Columbus Zoo is $3 cheaper.
Since SeaWorld opened in 1964, the park has encountered harsh criticism from the public. Whether criticized for their ethics or their oblivious harm to animals, the underwater amusement park raises many ethical questions regarding the captivity of sea animals, especially orcas. Most people are uninformed about orcas to begin with, so they do not understand why SeaWorld is such a terrible place. SeaWorld exploits animals in their shows to bring revenue to their company, while disregarding the physical and mental health of the animals. Today, people have begun to see the reasons why SeaWorld should close. SeaWorld should close their doors due to their record of unhealthy orcas, their aggressive killer whale, Tilikum, and their dishonesty to the public.
SeaWorld orca adds another to kill count. Zoos are bad because they harm the animals, the trainers have doubt and it can lead to bigger problems, and they put a lot of stress on others.
“Can you imagine being in a small concrete enclosure for your life when you’re used to swimming 100 miles a day?” This is how captive dolphins live everyday, their natural habitat is swimming miles and miles in the ocean. When they get captured their lives change for the worse. In the past decade Seaworld and captive animals has been a controversial subject. Many people believe the keeping orca whales captive is damaging to the animal and affects them in a negative way. Others believe Seaworld is used to rescue animals and save them. The treatment of animals in captivity is cruel and should be stopped. Keeping animals captive is an appalling punishment.
eaWorld is a world renowned marine attraction park but many people do not know about the animal cruelty that goes on there. Animals should not be kept in such small captive tanks when they’re are used to swimming for 100’s of miles a day. The whales are becoming aggressive as a result of treatment they receive at SeaWorld. No animal should be taken from their own mothers at such a young age and be put in these small tanks compared to the ocean that they are used to and have to live there for the rest of their lives and perform tricks in front of thousands of people. SeaWorld keeps their whales and other animals captive in poor conditions and should be shut down.
Most people today have visited or at least heard of the popular tourist attraction, Seaworld. These tourists may think of it as a place to see marine animals do trick, like killer whales interacting with humans in a fun and entertaining way- but do we ever stop to think about the treatment or feelings of these creatures? After visiting Seaworld and seeing the famous Shamu, the thought of how living in captivity affects the animal had not crossed my mind. After researching I am now extremely concerned with the way these whales are impacted by spending their lives in bathtubs and forced to do tricks for food, all while humans are blindly funding this billion dollar business.
SeaWorld is a United States based park with live aquatic animals. SeaWorld has been under some scrutiny lately with the treatment of their Orcas as well as their living conditions. Some people believe what SeaWorld is doing is okay whereas others do not. Some think keeping animals in captivity is acceptable, and others think taking them away from their families is uncalled for. Washington Post believes what SeaWorld doing is perfectly acceptable. PBS a typically children’s network is completely for SeaWorld and keeping animals in captivity. SeaWorld is strongly debated on keeping animals in captivity, their living conditions, and taking orcas away from their families.
Zoos, SeaWorld, and circuses are places for families to enjoy entertainment. However, most people do not realize how the animals in each of these establishments are handled. Yes, they all bring in revenue and present the tricks these animals can do, yet these places preform detrimental acts to the animals. For example, the killer whales at SeaWorld are sometimes starved if they do not perform the way the trainer wants them to. In comparison, circuses torture lions and tigers until they are submissive to how the show-people want them to act. Zoos do not necessarily torture their animals, but it is proven the animals live much shorter lives in captivity. “Lives of animals in the wild versus captivity are literally worlds apart, and even the best captive facilities can’t recreate the conditions of the wild — not exactly. Most don’t even try, leaving animals in tiny enclosures with no socialization, enrichment or joy. Captivity is unnatural and unhealthy” (Sentenac). People are starting to recognize the danger of continuing these practices, but there’s a long way to go.Furthermore, animals in all of these places have suffered many traumatizing and even deadly events. There was a recent report that two circus lions, whom had severe head injuries, were killed by poachers who snuck into the sanctuary. “Last year poachers bypassed an advanced security system at a lodge near the town of Tzaneen in the Limpopo province, killing two lions by feeding them poisoned meat” (Graham).
Whales in captivity are accessible to safer standards and care. SeaWorld trainers are well trained and are fit to help killer whales stay in shape. As told by Sea World, “The killer whales in our facilities benefit whales in the wild. We provide scientific research and data that would be difficult or impossible to get in the wild (Killer Whales). “SeaWorld provides “positive reinforcement training techniques and compassionate care with all of the animals (SeaWorld Cares)”. Sea World remains and world’s most respected marine zoological institution.
Animals are not here for our entertainment. They are living, breathing, beings that deserve a certain level of respect from a civilized society that is aware and understands the behaviors of these creatures. It seems barbaric to me that we continue to imprison wild animals that are never going to be domesticated--a fact that we are well aware of. The educational benefits that society receives from organizations such as SeaWorld is an invaluable experience, but I believe there are more humane ways to engage communities in the education and welfare of animals that are not native to us. I think it is a hard argument to make that I would not care about the wellbeing of an animal just because I had not seen it up close and personal. There are a variety of other ways to achieve the same
One last reason that the sea animals shouldn’t be kept at Seaworld is the expenses. According to www.bbc.com, one bluefin tuna could cost up to about 77 thousand dollars, and one dolphin can cost up to 10 thousand not including the cost of the habitat or food. A killer whale can cost a million dollars, not including the tank or anything. These are big expenses for Seaworld and they might not be able to sustain them, which would make the animals starve, or make them cut the tanks down to smaller sizes. The tanks are already too small and make all the sea animals
Imagine a place where you can see your favorite sea animals. Whales, dolphins, sharks, even penguins. Doesn’t that sound like somewhere you would enjoy going? SeaWorld is what comes to most people’s minds when they think of this, but is SeaWorld really that wonderful? Is SeaWorld truly what it’s hyped up to be? SeaWorld claims to be a sanctuary for animals where they keep animals like killer whales safe from the dangers of the world. Well, SeaWorld should really get a dictionary because a “sanctuary” is truly not what they give these animals. Orcas are the main attraction of SeaWorld but they are also one of the animals that suffer the most. Orcas in SeaWorld lifelessly float in their pool with little to no shade from the sun. In the wild,
SeaWorld has been a well loved and renowned place to the USA and the families in it for over 53 years. The world famous entertainment park is well known for its wide variety of oceanic animals, and of course, the part that brings them the most fame: their killer whale shows. Because killer whales are so hard to find in the ocean, and going out on a whale watching boat is usually quite expensive, many people have ended up opting for the choice of going to SeaWorld to see these animals. These shows are considered to be spectacular to some audiences, and an abusive nightmare to others. Despite the fact that many people love SeaWorld and consider it to be a fun and family-friendly place, the person with educated knowledge about what really goes on in this place could never see it the same way again, and should want something to be done about it. SeaWorld has caused controversial problems to animal lovers, the people who work there, and of course the killer whales themselves. SeaWorld should be talked about more in schools, educating more young people in hopes that one day there is enough people to take a stand and get this place to stop keeping killer whales captive.
SeaWorld should be shut down for its cruel, and inhumane methods of keeping and training animals. Orcas, dolphins, and other animals are used like machines, and not living things. They are confined to tiny tanks, taken away from their homes and their families, and forced to perform for the entertainment of people.
Although keeping animals in captivity is bad because they don't get to be themselves they should keep animals in zoos or captivity because it helps the species not go extinct, it brings happiness to families that go to the zoo, and zoos bring in enough money to build better exhibits. Even though zoos still have negative impacts on animals lives they should still keep animals in
