Core Values in Conflict
Each human in the world has a set of values around which one bases their actions and opinions on. These sets of values vary from person to person. My core values are family, friends, and education. The only negative aspect of my values is that they tend to be in conflict with each other often. There are days where I have to choose between friends and family or education, and it is often a tough decision to make. In life, everyone has to make decisions on whether one value is more important than another, and characters in stories and plays have those decisions to make as well. Damien in The Wind That Shakes the Barley and Wanda in The Legend both have conflicting values based on the situations they find themselves in. In Stanislaw Wyspaniaki’s The Legend, Wanda was the adopted daughter of King Krak, who passes away during the first act. She, being the only heir to the throne that is still alive, now has to deal with all of the problems. While Krak is dying, the Germans are also invading the castle because the German prince wants to marry Wanda, but she declined and so they decided to take over Poland. When Smiech tells her that that the Germans are very close and will take her, she responds by saying, “Silence, I will plunge this knife into my chest before then, rather than have to love them” (Wyspianki, 30). She clearly says that she would rather die than get married to the German prince. After Krak dies, she begins to weep over his dead body.
Values mean different things to different people as they have differing beliefs and values. After this book was published, people’s values may have changed as they realized they have had the wrong values and priorities, and needed a change.
Values help people determine what is right and wrong. They provide our moral compass in life.
Values are often influenced by different ideologies, so it is important to look at these also.
Thesis Statement (What is the most important conflict?): _The most important conflict in “A Long Walk to Water” is mMan vs. sSelf because Salva is battling his own fight mentally. Most people close to him had either died or their whereabouts were unknown, but the strength of his family and friends screamed for him to carry on making him what he is today. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Values create motivation within a person to act in a situation for someone who does not seem to be asking for it. An example of this is shown in the novel, “There Will Be Wolves” by Karleen Bradford. In this book, Ursula, the daughter of an apothercary, Master William, was accused to being a witch for healing an injured dog with Bruno, instead of being punished, Ursula was forced to join the Crusade for a complete absolution. In their journey, people will learn how to show importance to anyone. Some people do not realize the things they do are wrong that have good intentions for someone.
We all have our own values, how important we think something is. E.g. honesty, and how important people think
Secondly, people may think that their values may not affect them, but they’re wrong, they affect them a lot. Since character describes how you are and what your moral strengths are, having bad character could make people dislike you because of how you are. On the other hand, if you have good character, then more people would see how good of a person you are and even more people would like you. Morals sort of describe the way you make decisions, so having bad morals could guide your life down the drain, while having good morals could guide your life minute by minute toward noble goals. Integrity is also very important. Having bad integrity could make you very non-trustworthy to others. Having good integrity would make you very trustworthy to others. Knowing how important they are, you should always have good or even better character, morals, and integrity.
Values relate to our personal principles, morals, and ideals—that is, what we consider to be important. Each person is unique, with their own personal values and beliefs shaped by a number of factors that include culture, religion, and personal experiences. We value each person as an individual, respect their aspirations and commitments in life, and seek to understand their priorities, needs, abilities and limits.
Conflict is present everywhere in our culture today. Whether it is on the streets of a large city, or in a rural farm town, conflict amongst people is present. This is no different than in the book The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. In his novel, Steinbeck utilizes conflict to illustrate the domino effect of the decline of the poor.
As human beings, we all have our own values, beliefs, and attitudes. These things develop over the course of our lifetime and at any point can change based on an experience that we may have. Our family, friends, community and the experiences we have had all contribute to our sense of who we are and how we view the world.
Experiences shape a person's values in many ways just like for Tom in The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer. Someone might have experienced something heartbreaking with a school playground that prevents them from going back ever again, or someone could have done something bad like Tom did when he paid all the little kids to do his whitewashing for him, and then he can never be trusted again just because of one incident. Experiences shape a person's values by what they have went through in the past sometimes preventing them to do things in the future.
Values and ethics are one of the most important characteristic of an individual. They basically define who we are and what we believe. There are many factors that determine our values and ethics. Culture, religion, and many other factors affect our beliefs. Many times are values and ethics can clash with different people who hold different views and beliefs. This doesn't mean our values or ethics are wrong it just means we think differently than others. Most people have a good sense of ethics and values. Knowing between right and wrong is a good foundation to practicing good ethics and morals.
As a kid grows up, he or she develops core values and morals or ethics. These two things are often influenced by the values of parents and friends as well as the law. Core values represent what a person holds the highest and what he or she believes in. A person’s morals determine what he or she thinks is right or wrong. Together, core values and morals shape how people live their lives. It translates into everything that a person does, says, and writes. This allows people to read a book and depict what the author’s core values and morals are. So by analyzing Julius Caesar, Shakespeare’s core values and moral will shine through. Although there are many characters in Julius Caesar that are vastly different in nature, the way in which Shakespeare highlights any individual points to what he stands for.
The company Enron was formed in 1985 after two natural gas companies, Houston Natural Gas and InterNorth merged together. Kenneth Lay, former chief executive officer of Houston Natural Gas was named CEO of Enron and a year later, Lay was assigned to the chairman of Enron. A few years later, Enron launched a website to allow customers to buy stock for Enron, making it the largest business site in the world. The growth of Enron was rapid; it was even named seventh largest company on the Fortune 500 list; however things began to fall apart in 2001. (News, 2006). In the third quarter of that same year, Enron posted an enormous loss of over $600 million in four years. This is one of the reasons why one of the top executive resigned even though he had only after six months on the job. Their stock prices fell dramatically. Eventually, Enron filed for bankruptcy protection. This caused many investors to lose money they had invested in the company and employees to lose their jobs and their investments, including their retirement funds. The filing of bankruptcy and the resignation of one of the top executives, also led to an investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Committee, which proved to be one of the biggest scandals in U.S. history. (News, 2006). All former senior executives stood trial for their illegal practices.
These values are a reflection of my own. Although, they are a challenge to fulfill and do cause conflict within my own decisions. For example, if I open myself up to trust a person, then I become vulnerable to them not fulfilling my expectations of what trust means to me. The activity did reflect my interests in a couple of ways. For instance, I enjoy the genre of drama and working with others to complete tasks, so this activity helped fulfill both of those interests. Working in groups allows me to gain another perspective on a topic that I did not consider myself. For example, current tv show “Feud Betty and Joan” on the FX channel covers the disdain Joan Crawford had for Betty Davis while filming Baby Jane. In one scene the director of a movie assistant who is female approaches Ms. Crawford with a script she has written specifically for her, and the assistant would be the director of the movie. Now in the 1960s, it was not common for women to direct movies, and Joan declined the offer. This hurts the assistant and she began to cry, the assistant thought she was turned down because of her gender, but Joan explained it is for the reason that you are a nobody. Ms. Crawford exposed a different perception that I was not even
