Currently, GM employs 212,000 plus employees working in 396 facilities across the globe (GM, 2014). GM offers vehicles ranging from electric cars to trucks. GM offers a large range of vehicles in more than 120 countries across the globe. The General Motors Foundation is involved in philanthropic activities throughout the world. These activities are mostly related to child hunger, education, promote diversity and support vital non-profit organization. Recently GM has gone through tough time due to the quality of the vehicles they have manufactured. Problems arose due to recall of over 29 million vehicles (CBS News, 2014). As a result of recalls, company’s image and the profitability of the company got negatively impacted.

The way GM has held the recall is atrocious. The question has been raised: Is Mary Barr’s fault? According the time line of GM, in 2001 engineers recognized the issue during production designs of Saturn ion. At that time, Mary Barr was not CEO of the company. So, it seems that Mary is not at fault. First prodromal stage of warning signs and symptoms started in 2003. “Technician sees Saturn ion stall while being driven” (Peter Valdes-Dapena, 2014). This company was created to challenge the Ford Motor company in the twentieth century. General Motors created automatic transmissions, practical air conditioning, and the very first version self start. These creations gave General Motors the edge over Ford and other car companies at the time. “In the early years, GM's marketers added style and color to cars, putting Henry Ford and his industry-leading Model T's on the defensive” (Woodyard 03).With knowledge and advancement General Motors performed well and gained from it. But in recent years General Motors started to cut corners and build things of a cheaper quality making mistakes. These mistakes and corner cutting created problems for General Motors. It eventually lead to General Motors filing for bankruptcy on June 1st in 2009. General Motors was eventually saved from their bankruptcy but the damage was done. The General Motors plant in Moraine Ohio was shut down causing a lot of people to lose their jobs. The mistakes General Motor made did not just hurt themselves but the people who relied on those jobs. There are people who are now homeless and are struggling. The knowledge General Motors had helped them reach their success but the creators lost sight of their morals. Think of it this way, all of the debt, problems, and poor choices made by the notoriously distinguished old GM were put on a boat (Motors Liquidation, Inc.) and given a viking burial (code 363 liquidated (sold in parts for as much profit as possible)) while every asset went to a new company convolutedly called General Motors. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) refers to the social and environmental responsibility policies and practices developed by an organization to increase its positive influence and reduce its negative activity towards society (Parks, 2008). The business approach and corporate philosophy of an organization is easily altered due to economic pressures, technological improvement and stakeholder needs and demands. "Going green" or being eco-friendly is one such demand. Environmental and sustainability concerns originate most often from governments, consumer activists, and the general public (Schlosser, 2008). Thus, organizations must implement sustainability into daily practices. In addition, sustainability alters the nature of competition and drives companies to think differently about products, processes, and technologies (Parks, 2008).
General Motors has defined their organizational culture as "Design, Build and Sell the World's Best Vehicles". In the design portion of this definition, GM focuses on core brands in order to become a leader in research and development. In the build portion of this definition, GM strives to operate in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. In the sell portion of this definition, GM strives to maximize revenues, offer customers high residual value, and lower incentives. GM's mission statement reads, "General Motors is a multinational corporation engaged in socially responsible operations, worldwide. It is dedicated to provide products and services of such quality that our customers will receive superior value while our employees and business partners will share in our success and our stock-holders will receive a sustained superior return on their investment." This mission cannot be more ironic.

I chose to look into General Electric for this project because they are an energy supplier and multi-national company. Energy providers have a reputation as a money hungry companies that care about the bottom line more than people and the planet. It is easy for a person to assume that a corporation of GE’s size, money would be its only concern.
