Cosmetology Career Essay

I have chosen cosmetology as my research career. This career particularly interest me because it is something I would like to do with my life. I feel this career is filled with opportunities that can be very beneficial to me financially and emotionally. One specific goal I have in my life is to one day open my own salon.

There are a lot of steps in getting education and training for a career in Cosmetology. The minimum education level required for this career is postsecondary training. There is no such thing as maximum training in cosmetology because a person can keep training after receiving the credentials necessary to start a career in cosmetology. ‘Cosmetology programs generally grant certificates, diplomas or associate's degrees, rather than bachelor's degrees’ (Bachelor’s). All the education necessary is a high school diploma, cosmetology diploma, and a certificate or associate's degree program. The education needed for cosmetology can range anywhere from 9 months to 2 years. The minimal amount for this education in cosmetology is from $5,000 to $10,000. Going through cosmetology school gave you the expertise you need to cut and style hair. People come to you because you make them look and feel their best. Unfortunately, you never know when an accident can happen, and no amount of training or professionalism can prevent every mishap. Before I graduated from high school, I devised a five year plan for myself. First, I would attend SUNY Albany to obtain a degree in business. Then, I would attend a cosmetology school, acquire the 1,000 hours needed to take my state board exams, take those exams to finally secure my cosmetology license. All of this would eventually lead to opening my own salon in the future. About a month before my graduation, an ambulance bolted my mom to the hospital.

​Every since I was a child I have had a passion for doing other people’s hair. When I was little I would use my baby dolls as clients and work on their hair until it was perfect and neat. I have chosen to be in the cosmetology field because I like to help other people with their needs and wants as well as mine. I am aware that while working in this industry I will work with many different ethnic groups and many different hair types. I feel I can do anything as long as I have the determination to do so. Many people go to cosmetology school to work for someone else, but I would like to open up a mini-salon out of my own home someday.

Cosmetology is the “study or art in cosmetics and their use”. Cosmetology is not only for women, but for men and children too (What Is Cosmetology 14 Oct. 2014). Cosmetologist helps to change their customer’s physical appearance by doing their hair, nails, or giving them facials to help their skin (Education Portal 12 Oct 2014). Some cosmetologist work out of their homes or in small shops and others work in salons or spas (What Is Cosmetology 10 Oct. 2014).

Many people wonder what is needed to become that successful good paid cosmetologist. Society sometimes think men are not suited for a cosmetology career; little do they know that is not true. A man who was not ashamed of the job which they called a woman’s job would be Paul Mitchell. In the cosmetology industry what is mainly needed is patience, which would be the best skill for this career. Cosmetologists do not only handle hair, but many more parts of the body. A career in cosmetology is based on professional skill or practice of beautifying the face, skin, and hair; therefore one needs to know the safety requirements in using many different chemicals, job description, salary, and benefits to work in this career.

In order to become a cosmetologist, I will have to take certain steps. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, I must graduate from a state-licensed barber or cosmetology school. I must also have a high school diploma or equivalent. The ages vary from state to a state of how old I have to be to attend a hair school. Most states require that I to be at least 17 or 18 to apply. There are some states that will allow enrollment at the age of 16.After I have graduated from a state-approved training I will be required to take a test.The test will be a written test and/or in some cases it may be a test of styling skills or an oral exam. My hairdresser had this friend she went to college with and all she wanted to do was colour hair. She went through many years of beauty school and countless hours of practicing and finally was able to colour hair. When she finished her first client she immediately hated it and went back to college to get a degree in something else because she realized that she utterly hated colouring hair even though it was what she wanted to do her whole life.

A survey certified that average women spend about $13,000 on makeup in her life time. Not only that, but also spend 300 hours applying it. Beauty tends to increase the self esteem of women, they think more positive of themselves. Along with that like anything else cosmetology has revolutionized throughout the years. Cosmetology has played an important role in lives of women, it does not only represent beauty, but also self confidence.

The greatest accomplishment in my life thus far has been graduating high school. Academics has always been very significant to me. Neither my Mother or my Father graduated from high school and they have always encouraged me to receive my diploma. with the diploma came pride, being the first person in my family to get a higher education and knowing I'm one step closer to my career.

Cosmetology is the study and application of beauty treatment. Branches of specialty includes hairstyling, skin care, cosmetics, manicures/pedicures. And a Fine Artists are artists that include painters, sculptors, and illustrators. In fine arts I would be doing painting/ body painting. For schooling I would love to go to University of Arizona or Eastern Arizona Collage. I have wanted to go to U of Arizona since I was 10. Eastern Arizona Collage offers the cosmetology class I need and University of Arizona has the Fine arts class I need. A lot of people have an interest in arts or something of the field. But the whole arts, makeup, and hair has been my escape from reality when ever I'm having a hard time at school or even in life. I've been doing (cutting and coloring) my own hair and doing my own makeup for 4 years. I have done other peoples hair and makeup before and gotten nothing but positive feed back. School will cost money so, I am going to be applying for scholarships.

When I turned 38-years-old I wanted to make a change in my life. I was tired of working jobs that had me living from paycheck to paycheck. The only option I saw was to return to school to get some sort of formal training. I did not want to spend years in college, so I decided to go to a trade school. After some research, I became intrigued with the field of cosmetology. I liked the possibility of someday going into business for myself. I went for an orientation at a local beauty school, and I was sold on being able to complete the program in a year. I was overjoyed thinking that I would be soon be putting all those dead end jobs behind me. I thought becoming a cosmetologist would be life changing, and it would be, but not the way I envisioned.
