Abstract

Flexible Leadership (FLT) is a theory that falls under the umbrella of strategic leadership, emphasizing the need for leaders to be flexible in their actions when influencing of the key determinants of financial performance. His adaptive responsiveness as a leader has been especially important in driving the company into profitability since inception. Having spent his life working in the retail industry, Sinegal is efficient communicator who is adept at avoiding strategies followed made by his competitive counterparts. Unlike many business leaders he shares his ideas regarding possible improvements requesting feedback as to whether the ideas will work and what is likely to fail, if adjustments are not made in a timely manner (Kaiser 2008).
The Chief Executive Officer CEO) plays a vital role in FLT implementation. To properly implement FLT a CEO must think and act in simultaneous modes of efficiency and flexibility, enabling them to adapt to new situations and demands as they appear. In doing so they develop an understanding about competitive strategies that combine cost efficiency with innovative adaptation techniques (Nalevanko, 2011). Leaders, who become self-aware create personal guiding principles and are flexible in their leadership approaches. They are the kind of leaders who will have success in navigating any situation (Sousa, 2011). Business leaders of today need to be conscientious of the fact that they have to compete for the loyalty of customers, and also for the hearts and minds of their talented employees.
