1. What education or training is needed to do the job?
Officer DiPace describe the requirments and training that is needed to serve in the NYPD and many other police departments. For the NYPD 60 college credits is required to join or 2 years of full time active duty miltiary service in the U.S Armed Forces. Other police departments in the area such as the White Plains Police Department do not require a college education. He believes having at least two years of college focusing on criminal justice can be very helpful for individuals wishing to pursue a career in law enforcement. Officer DiPace believes militiary experiene can help in the fieild of police work. Military experience is helpful in learning how to work in a team oriented environment. Individuals with military experience usually adapt well to life as a police officer. Though not always thought of as a skill, being a good listener and communicator is something that will always be useful in dealing with stressful situations that a officer may encounter. In general, the most useful skill is the desire to have a meaningful and positive impact on the community. Officer DiPace exlains there are several promotional opportunities in the NYPD. A police officer who is working in an investigative capacity can be promoted to the Detective ranks. Sergeant, Lieutenant and Captain ranks are the result of civil service tests administered by the Department of Citywide Administrative Services. Ranks beyond that of Captain are discretionary and are at the direction of the Police Commissioner. With due time, hard work and dedication, officers can discover new opportunities for promotion. There are twelve qualities that Dennis Nowicki believed that are authoritative for entry-level police officers: “Enthusiasm, Good communication skills, Good judgement, Sense of humor, Creativity, Self-motivation, Knowing the job and the system, Ego, Courage, Discretion, Tenacity, and Thirst for knowledge” (Peak, 2012, pp. 137-138). The book also sheds light on the inner world of police officers, how officers will protect their own--even if that individual is wrong. This paper will show four different police departments that are currently hiring or recruiting for police officers. There will be a summary on the research found on the process used to recruit police officers. It will also show their current hiring trends and what hiring practices they have that are successful or not successful. The paper will also go over the different methods departments use to train their new officers and their values.

Virtually every decision had to go to the top for approval, with the goal of limiting the low-level officer’s exposure to temptation. To reinforce the hierarchy, specialized units were created to deal with such problems as drugs, youth, guns, and gangs. As Bratton described it, [The department] was divided into little fiefdoms, and some bureau chiefs didn’t even talk to each other…. Since 9/11 the NYPD has made enormous strides in countering terrorism. They have created the Counter terrorism Bureau with over one thousand officers assigned to it. The bureau is responsible for a number of operation including, counterterrorism operations, training and exercise for NYPD personnel, along with risk assessment and critical infrastructure protection of key sites within New York City. The Deputy Commissioner of intelligence also has an expanded role. NYPD officers are now deployed worldwide as they no longer completely rely on the federal government for protection. The curriculum that is devised for a police officer is very important to the police officer and his or her success in their chosen career path. It is a long process when becoming a detective. In college, classes such as: English, American history, business law, government, psychology, sociology, chemistry, and physics are suggested. Before becoming a detective, one must attend a law enforcement academy, providing the officer with a foundation of education with sixteen to twenty-four college units in criminal justice or administration of criminal justice. (Morkes 677) After graduation from the law enforcement academy the officer undergoes job training with a field training officer for a period specified by the law enforcement agency and continues to work while on a probationary period, ranging from one to two years.
The United States Army has many jobs in which civilians can choose to enter that will allow them to specialize in a field of their choice. Many people have joined to serve their country, others have joined to make a living and some enjoy the sense of adventure. One of the many jobs available to a man or woman is a military policeman. As a military police, one is in charge of all the doings on the facility they are stationed at, as well as the little things that take place on base, such as traffic control, domestic issues, and other problems that occur. Before a civilian becomes a Military Police they must got through 3 stages of training, basic training, advanced individual training, and weapons training which takes place within . The life of a military police then forms into Basic and Advanced Training, active duty, and eventually, retirement.
