The United States Army has many jobs in which civilians can choose to enter that will allow them to specialize in a field of their choice. Many people have joined to serve their country, others have joined to make a living and some enjoy the sense of adventure. One of the many jobs available to a man or woman is a military policeman. As a military police, one is in charge of all the doings on the facility they are stationed at, as well as the little things that take place on base, such as traffic control, domestic issues, and other problems that occur. Before a civilian becomes a Military Police they must got through 3 stages of training, basic training, advanced individual training, and weapons training which takes place within . The life of a military police then forms into Basic and Advanced Training, active duty, and eventually, retirement.
Becoming a soldier is the first stage to becoming a military policeman. To achieve this status he or she must complete the process of paperwork, and shipping off to MEPS, also known as Military Entrance Processing Station. This process takes four to five months depending on the amount of paperwork. Once the civilian is accepted, and processed through MEPS they are known as a DEPPER. A DEPPER is a civilian that is waiting to ship out to Basic training through the Delayed Entry Program. In this time the DEPPER will train for the appropriate time and when the ship off date come they will leave from their ship off station to their
A patrol officer is responsible to enforce the local, state, and federal laws in a community. They also have to protect the people from crime and help the department create a good relationship with the community. Now depending on the department it might take two to five years before getting promoted into the next stage as a detective. Most departments however, prefer an officer that has a degree in criminal justice. A detective is responsible for looking at cases finding out who created the crime. After being a detective, the next step is to be a detective supervisor. A detective supervisor is responsible for all the other detectives. They are also assign cases and make sure that the department runs well. The next chance of advancement is to be a police sergeant. A sergeant is the one that gives everyone something to do. They also lead and represent the police department. If everything goes well the advancement will eventually lead to the city’s
Military Police have many jobs and have to meet many requirements to be able to do their jobs. They have to go through a lot of training in order to do everything required of them. They have to be able to react quickly and calmly in any situation and evaluate the situation with clear and responsive actions and everything in the training helps them do that. They receive a good salary and benefits and it goes hand-in-hand with the rank of the officer.
My social advocacy group’s position regarding the militarization of police is that it is necessary for every local police agency to be armed and trained to neutralize any threat it may face to protect the citizens within their district. There have been 142 shootings around schools in the years following the December 2012 school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut (Fantz, Knight, & Wang, 2014). From 2004-2008, there were an average of 564 work related shootings for every year (U.S. Department of Labor, 2010). In 2014 there were a total of 3,961 bank robberies. Of those 1,881 involved some type of a gun, 93 were an explosive device, and 31 had another type of weapon. These resulted in 13 deaths, 63 injured, and 31 hostages (FBI, 2015). This
Police corps training is necessary in our society. This style of training is realistic and is intended to make educated, disciplined, community oriented, and physically fit officers. These are essential ingredients for high performing police officers that will constantly progress successfully into higher levels of leadership roles throughout their careers. There is no amount of training that can truly prepare you for the real life events police officers will deal with once in the field. This is more emphasis of why police corps training is so necessary, making it as realistic as possible. Having police officers that are trained in a Paramilitary format also better prepares them for the serious threats of terrorism that exist in out world
The war on drugs is what initially gave birth to the militarization of police in communities across America. Unfortunately, post 9/11 war on terror has strengthened the military persona. Innocent citizens including children have fallen victim to this new military of law enforcement in our homeland. With legislations and procedures like a capability in defense resources that allowed the Pentagon to transfer excess military equipment to police, local law enforcement agencies are using weapons found in the combat zone of foreign lands. Since our current President Obama has been in office police agencies have reportedly received over tens of thousands of assault rifles; and roughly 200,000 ammunition magazines; thousands of pieces of concealment and night-vision equipment; and hundreds of silencers, along with armored cars and military type aircraft. The result is that police agencies around the country possess the military-level equipment, turning officers who are supposed to fight crime and shelter communities into what appears to be an invading force of an army. Moreover, military-style police raids have increased in the past years (Apuzzo, 2014). When should protect and serve public safety and civil liberties out weight the badge?
So you want to be a police officer. Where do you start, what do you have to do? Many people every day aspire to becoming a police officer, whether it’s brought down from previous generations, or they feel the need to want to help people. They apply with a prospected department but, do they really know what they are getting their selves into once they are hired? Before the Chief of Police will let someone on the street on responding to calls, patrolling neighborhoods to deter criminal activity, conducting traffic stops, making arrests and testifying in court, the newly employed police officer needs countless hours of training so that they not only how to do the job correctly and proficiently, but they understand the laws, policies, procedures and the liabilities that are entailed with the job. The day that a police officer is hired, he or she is referred to as a Police Officer Recruit, and depending on the department, training will start the first day. Although it’s mostly administrative with mounds of paperwork to fill
CMPD has a 10-step process. First, is filling out the application online. Second, is testing, written and Job-Related Physical Abilities Test(JRPAT). The written test is to evaluate the individual on memorization, reading comprehension, and retention. The JRPAT test is to evaluate the trainee physical fitness. The third is the interview, you must pass the physical fitness and the written test to be considered for the interview. Fourth, is a psychological screening which new recruits a mentally evaluated to see if they are capable of being a law enforcement officer. Fifth is a background investigation which consists of them investigating your history to see what type of person you are and how you lived. Sixth is a polygraph examination which is a lie detector test. Seventh is the chain of command interview which consists of the leaders interviewing you to see if you are right for the team. Eighth is medical evaluation which is to see if you are healthy enough and a drug screening test. Ninth is the civil service board which meets once a month and they have to approval your application to see if you are suitable for hire. Tenth is the academy which is 22 weeks of training. This training will teach law enforcement standards, communications techniques, computer and technology proficiency and cultural
Secondly, when joining the police force, we assume the individual wants to help, protect and serve. But most of the people join because it’s a job they can get, depending on which police department, requires only military experience, high school diploma, or have 60 credit hours of post-secondary education (Grabiner 2016). Police recruiters are required to find people who can complete their academy training and perform the highest level of service in a short amount of time. As a result, the Author, Gene Grabiner encourages all veterans to take this opportunity and join the police department, and like so many other, vets need jobs when they return home.
To be hired at most departments now you have to have thirty to sixty college credit hours or at least two years active military experience with no less than an honorable discharge. Hiring requirements keep getting harder every year. Most departments will not hire anyone that is not in really good physical condition. To be a police officer, I will have to have firearms training and a certification that will make me able to carry my gun while off duty. I will also have to be phase four CLEET certified to work for most departments. CLEET stands for Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training. It is the certification I will get from OSU/OKC police science program. There are four phases of CLEET but to be a police officer you have to be phase four. I have already talked to an advisor at OSU/OKC about stretching the police science program to three years so that I will still be able to work full time while I am in college. I will only be going twice a week for the three years so that I will graduate right before I turn twenty one. Twenty one is the legal age anyone has to be to be a police officer in all fifty states. Some departments will take cadets as young as eighteen years of age. To be hired most departments will send a person through multiple interviews, a polygraph test, drug test, and a physical test just to get hired. Most departments
The reason people believe that military-style police academy is a good thing because of the unknown in the communities you will face (Bethel University, 2014). By obtaining this training it will help officers become disciplined, will help the officer with control of his use of force, and the officer gains trust in his fellow officers by living, eating, and sleeping together.
This essay is about an event and its impact on people doing the right thing and on the military police officer’s victory. It’s also described what officers have to deal with when we go to calls. Police officers don’t get a lot of recognition when it comes to court cases that are won, we just get the satisfaction of getting that person off the street for a period of time and hopefully getting that person to learn a lesson and change.
During the hiring process, a civilian must undergo a physical from a doctor that works hand in hand with NYPD along with a physical test that closely monitors the agility, balance, strength and speed of a recruit. This test is also known as JST, the Job Standard Test which consists of jumping a six foot high wall, running up and down a flight of stairs six times, pushing and pulling a physical restraint simulation, run six-hundred (600) feet around in a triangle shape pattern of cones, pull a 176 pound rescue dummy thirty-five (35) feet and then move on to the trigger pull where the recruit must aim correctly and pull the trigger of a mock gun sixteen (16) times with their dominant hand and then fifteen (15) with their other hand. The JST must be completed within a matter of four minutes and twenty-eight seconds, (4:28), (NYPD, 2017). During the academic aspect of the hiring process, civilians are instructed to take a written exam, also known as a police test. The police test consists of memory, reasoning, logic, perception and consists of 53
The effects or outcome of this military-style police academy training have on police recruitment is a positive enforcement. The cadets are being trained for both physical and self-defense tactics while learning criminal procedures. Military-style training teaches emotional challenges, high-speed chasing, weapon usages along with skills in shooting, and loyalty. Cadets learn social standards, teaches obedience, emphasizes battle, learn how to move about with non-verbal communication techniques'. Military-style training teaches the cadets how to arrive at the right place at the right time. Teaching that there are stressful days and hours of little to no sleep. We are now living in times where our law enforcers have to be wise, strong and always
For one, in the military a service member is taught to train for the enemy and basically trust no one. On the other hand, this mentally should be different for local law enforcement agency personnel. This is because law enforcement officers are tasked with protecting the citizens in their community, which is different from serving in a combat territory where basically everyone who is not in uniform is to be considered dangerous and the enemy.
In some cases, you have to complete a training academy, then you can apply for the place of you choice. Some districts require you to complete an in-house training course. After accepted into a district, you must complete extensive training prior to hitting the streets. The majority of your initial training will be classroom based, supplemented by practical exercises and scenarios. During this training, you will be called a “cadet” or “police trainee” (police). That title will change after you have completed all of the training required to be on your own. This means you can cooperate with other people nicely, keep your anger in tact, and you can do your job right, even with distractions. If sponsored by a hiring agency, you will receive your first paycheck and be eligible to receive benefits. Throughout your time on the job, you will need to complete training to make sure you keep up the ability to use good judgement and problem solve, demonstrate courage and take responsibility, and be resourceful and show initiative. As well as, obtain the capacity for empathy and compassion, the capacity to multi-task, and the capacity for engaging in teamwork and the ability to collaborate
