Covey Habit #2 In the first Covey assignment, I have identified that being reserved is quality that I would like to change. Instead of being quiet and distant, I would like to become more open and sociable. For example, I will be friendly toward everyone and take the initiative to start conversations with people around me, whether I know them well or not. In school, I will raise my hand to answer questions as well as ask questions when I do not understand a subject. Additionally, I will actively participate in discussions with classmates and be available to help. In clinicals, I will greet everyone courteously. I will talk to my nurse preceptors regularly, asking questions as well as providing assistance. In the work environment, I will take
In the book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey, lessons for personal change are presented in a very powerful and understandable way. The Habits can be applied to our own lives, our leadership of other people, a school or any other organization that can be run more effectively. However, before an application of these Habits can be made, a basic understanding of the material presented in the book must be obtained. Comparison with other leadership styles and theories can also clarify and reinforce this understanding as well. Finally, application can be made to a particular setting, a school.
The slides I reviewed for professional behavior was under the Medical Professional because this is my desired field, which Health Information Technology (HIT). Three slides were present for this review which provided a range of different attire for each group except the last slide. In the first slide there was a group two of the individuals were in business wear such as dress pants and shirts which is the norm for physicians as one had a stethoscope while the other wore a lab coat over his clothes. The others were dressed in uniforms or scrubs as they probably work in clinical areas of a health care organization. Slide number two was similar to the first one with one exception there was an individual dressed more like her worked in health
There are similarities and differences when analyzing the components of biological and humanistic approaches to personality. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs express important aspects of biological factors that approaches personality.
Reasoning Behind Choosing This Book I chose to read the book The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business by Charles Duhigg because I know every person has habits, decent and indecent. I anticipated to learn if our habits could be altered and the process our brains underwent to transform them. I wanted to gain knowledge of what parts of our brain were affected by habits. Intrigued, I read hoping to gain insight of if our personal habits affected our professional habits and if so, how.
How much do habits govern over our lives? “The Habit Loop” by Paul Minors, sets out to inform us about the shocking degree of control habits have in our brains. In the first chapter, Minors starts by developing a personal narrative about Eugene Pauly. Pauly was diagnosed with “viral encephalitis,” which damaged his ability to remember short term memories. Despite his condition however, Eugene was able to create and maintain new habits. Minors introduces how the Habit Loop works in the first chapter, outlining the concept as the main focus of the entire article. The second chapter highlights how habit completion anticipation creates cravings that can drive our minds. Furthermore, how companies such as Pepsodent and Febreze exploit this innate
As I have gotten older, some of the introversion has faded to a certain extent, but it is still present. Through my job as a Special Education Teacher, I have had to overcome a majority of my introversion so I can effectively do my job. On any given day, I will have to speak to not only my students but also the office staff, coworkers, and possibly some of the children’s parents. Conversation goes both ways, so to be successful at my job; I would have to be willing to be open and communicate with others more. I also have to realize that I need to make the first step sometimes. Not everyone is going to come to me; there are times I am going to have to go to others.
If you have fat to lose but have not just worked out, then do not eat bread, pasta, rice, and any other starchy carbs rather replace with double
In the Power of Habit, Charles Duhigg explains his theory of habit formation based on the habit loop. The habit loop is whenever a certain cue triggers your brain to go into a mode that automatically uses makes you follow certain patterns. This routine can be physical, mental or emotional. Then there is a reward, which helps your brain figure out if this particular loop is worth remembering for the future. We know a habit that we have good or bad is for a reason, but I know I need to change some of my bad habits based on Dudingg’s theory and it seems I can keep the same cue but create a new routine which is the middle step of habit loop and in the end I will get a good result and be happy. My bad habit is overspending even though I don’t have money; for example, when I see a purse with a new color or style I just go ahead and use my credit card, and the debt and interest payments create problems for me later. As I read Duhingg’s theory I see that I want to compare how the habit works in my life, how I can create a new rule in my life and how I use the golden rule of habit change to convert my bad habit of over spending.
After filling out the Seven Habits Profile, I have a much better idea of what my leadership strengths and weakness are. The categories I did the best on were category one, category six, cat-egory 7 and category 8. Category 1 is emotional bank account and the attributes for this was that I show kindness and consideration for others, I keep promises and honor commitments, and that I do not speak negatively of others when they are not present. While I may not be a very social person, I do believe in treating people how I would like to be treated. This means that I show re-spect and kindness to those around me so that everyone can be in a positive mood. I was also raised to be honest and truthful towards others. While some promises or commitments
As a result of getting distracted teens tend to lose judgment of what’s really important. On habit two “begin with the end in mind,” Covey teaches teens ways to find fulfillment in their accomplishments, and how to control their paths if they focus on what really matters. Habit two helps teens develop a clear picture of where they want to go with their life, and deciding what their values are. In the book the author wrote “So often in our quest to be more popular and to be part of the “in group,” we lose sight of things that are more important,”(Sean Covey, 82). Readers can clearly identify from this quote that sometimes in our journey to be well liked, we lose sense of what's really important. Teenagers losing track on what’s important will
Knowing is an interesting topic to dicuss because the brain is always devolping and storing knowledge, but the information it recieves is up to the owner to input. From the very first day of a person’s life their brain is creating synaptic connections, firing and delivering messages. Knowing and remembering things such as your name and address are things that your brain transfers to long term memory from repetitive use. In a book I had read called “The Power of Habit” a doctor had been observing and testing people with Alzeheimers and degenerative neurological diseases. In one case the doctor had visited a man with Alzeheimers in his home where he had lived with decades, when the doctor asked the man to draw a rudimentary map of his house
Over the years I’ve noticed my brothers demonstrate several behaviors that I could include in this paper. Behavior is defined as is any activity of an organism that can be observed or somehow measured. (BOOK pg 4) There is a specific behavior I’ve observed my youngest brother, Jeremy do. More specifically an overt behavior, a behavior that is observed by another person. This is when he bites the skin off from around his fingers/fingernails. When asked why he bites his skin off, he states he does this when he is bored. He says he does this to occupy his time, mostly when he feels there is nothing else to do. I then asked when did he notice he did this particular behavior the most, his answer was when he is playing baseball. He commented that
When the day comes that you take your final breath, how will you be remembered? Are you living your life in a way that will ensure you are remembered the way you want to be? Today, I am going to talk to about Dr. Stephen R. Covey, an author of several leadership books and co-owner of FranklinCovey, and explain why I think he is both a visionary and an ethical leader. I will begin by giving some examples of his visionary leadership displayed through his actions and behavior. Next, I will give examples of his ethical leadership displayed through his actions and decisions. Finally, I will discuss what I’ve learned through my research and describe how Dr. Covey has impacted me as a person and as a leader. I’ll begin
Stephen R. Covey first wrote the self-help book entitled, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, this book has since opened the eyes and hearts to millions of people throughout the world. After discovering the success that so many individuals encountered and still encountering, Dr. Covey decided to write the sequel entitled, The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness. This habit is explained as, “Finding your voice, your calling, your soul’s code and inspire others to do the same.” What does that mean exactly and how would one implement that particular habit into the business world? It is simple really, that is if you know what it is that you are working towards, having an end in mind. With some direction, a foundation, and a
