Crime is a very serious issue all over the world, and the United States is among the highest-ranked countries with elevated crime levels. One of the most crime-stricken cities in the United States is New Orleans. Crime affects both the physical and mental aspects of the lives of New Orleanians. Many are afraid to travel to certain parts of the city during the day and night, and those who travel feel the need to do so in groups in order to make criminals think twice before attacking. The NOPD is attempting to increase the number of police officers in the city, but the campaign for more law enforcement is not working as quickly and as effectively as chief law officials had previously hoped. In order to reduce crime in New Orleans, everyone …show more content…
Mayor Landrieu has been in frequent contact with Governor Bobby Jindal, strongly requesting that more state troopers be dispersed to New Orleans and be allowed to remain there on a regular basis. Also, organized walks in large groups and neighborhood watches have strengthened the confidences of ordinary citizens who are not going to let violators of their rights stop them from living their lives to the fullest. In addition, a local trash business entrepreneur named Sidney Torres has offered something called the “free-market solution,” which is gaining a great deal of attention, especially on Facebook (Binder). Torres is offering to pay New Orleans off-duty police officers to patrol the French Quarter in groups, and he is creating an app that allows citizens to report a crime to the police by way of their cell phones. Furthermore, the city of New Orleans is raising awareness through a “Nola for Life” campaign, which has already raised over one million dollars towards plans for reducing the murder rate in the city, including promoting job opportunities and rebuild neighborhoods (Office of Mayor Mitchell J. Landrieu). All of these are examples of the one solution to reducing crime in New Orleans, and that is unity. Every citizen of New Orleans must come together, bringing all of their skills and qualities to the table, and take a stand against those who would choose to disrupt the city’s happy lifestyle. As long as everyone sticks together, there is no reason to
and federal funds. Soon after, New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin ordered an evacuation of all
There are a lot of social problems in my community. The most current social issue is that Newark, NJ has laid off 167 police officials on November 30th of 2010. This was 14% of the police working for Newark. They were discharged from several precincts within Newark. Jen Chung from Gothamist stated "crime has increased there have been numerous carjacking’s—victims include a staffer in the NJ Attorney General's office and a Newark school principal—and shootings (since Thursday, four people have been shot dead and six have been wounded)." Since the layoff of police, residents have
The plan that we are proposing for the rebuilding of the city of New Orleans (Plan 2 on the Cost Calculation page) is a compromise between returning the city to pre-Katrina levels and demolishing the city in order to let nature run her course. We intend to downsize the city so that the neighborhoods of Lakeview, West End, Read Boulevard East, and Village DeL’Est are depopulated and turned to open space. We believe that it is important to maintain historical districts, restore wetlands, divert the Mississippi River, reimburse displaced people, conduct research in order to keep all plans and procedures up to

The Resident Officer Program of Elgin (ROPE) is a program in which officers live and work in distressed neighborhoods of the city to help solve the community‘s problem and improve the quality of life for the residents of Elgin. This is not a quick fix program. In neighborhoods that have deteriorated and in which crime has risen over the years, reversing the situation will take a long-term investment in time and personnel. However, numerous resident officer programs have sprung up around the nation since the early 1990’s. Supporters of these programs believe resident officer programs capture the essence of community policing: improved relationships between police and their neighbors, who team together to fight crime and address
The benefits as explained above will be the lifeblood of New Orleans. These sectors include tourism, port operations, wages, and taxes. I feel that examining these areas will give us a better look at the microeconomics of New Orleans and allows us to better estimate the benefits of a recovery effort.
Have you faced racial persecution due to the color of your skin? The time was 1900’s and this was the nightmare that Ida B. Wells-Barnett wrote of in Mob Rule in New Orleans. This is the true account of Robert Charles as he fights for his life to escape the hands of a lynching mob. This impassion story collaborates with the witness of this terrifying event that Wells describes. Wells uses her literary skills to shed light on racial discrimination, media bias, and her personal crusade for justice to portray this heart wrenching reality of the violent lynching during the 19th century.
The demolition of unsafe and unsound buildings and property was paramount in repairing the infrastructure of the New Orleans neighborhoods afflicted with the hazardous sewage and contaminated water and debris. (Samost)
The government has not been very productive in taking steps to reduce the crime rate in the city of New Orleans for many years. People have started to make attempts to decrease violence and it never gets finished. Lately, the government has been making progress by taking steps in the right direction. They have been doing many things to lessen the crime rate, namely putting up more street lights, improving the criminal justice system, and they are trying to bring back S.O.S which stands for Saving Our Sons.
My greatest fear is losing my kids to the crime and violence in my city. The things that our kids are exposed to in New Orleans makes it hard for a single parent like my-self to keep my kids away. In 2012 statistics shows the city’s violent crime rate was higher than the national violent crime rate average by 110.7%, crime rate total incidents were up by almost 6000 compared to property crimes. With all the drugs, killings, prostitution, breaking and entering, and black on black crimes it scares me to know that your kids are not safe in their own homes.
Black on black violence is an enormous problem in the African-American community. Living in a neighborhood that is mostly minority, many may have witnessed a lot of black on black violence. The black on black violence has continued to arise in many communities and continues to be a problem around the world. Black on black violence is ignorant, and many black Americans should be coming together instead of killing one another. African-Americans people should be helping each other achieve in the world, instead of putting one another.
The city of New Orleans is one of the most populated cities in the United States of America Within the city communities face serious problems daily. Crime is major issue that haunts the mind of people within the community. Gun violence in New Orleans is a serious issue that needs to be solved. It seems like every day there is person that loses there life to gun violence. New Orleans murder rate is one of the highest in the United States today. Most of the gun violence is because of senseless people doing stupid things. I’m against gun violence because I feel that no one should lose their life for any reason. In this essay I will explain what I think could help stop gun violence, and what’s already being done to combat it.
Crime is something that happens every day. Many people fear it, but it is a factor that people cannot escape. In places, like Detroit, people are surrounded by violent crime. Either they are the victims of it, or the committers, but it was not always like this. During the sixties, Detroit was one of the most lucrative cities in the country. Many people moved there to seek jobs in the automotive factories which increased the population to 1.85 million. (Padnani, 2013) However, this is not the case now. Many of the factories have moved, putting people and their families at a disadvantage. A numerous amount of workers relied on these jobs to feed their families. Since then, Detroit has faced a significant amount of hardships that has caused the city to deteriorate effecting education, employment, and the crime rate each factor acts as a chain reaction. The lack of diversity in the city can be a factor of the crime rate as well because Detroit is filled with a large population of minorities. Many politicians have looked for ways to solve the problem, but nothing has been proven to work.
Many citizens have become annoyed with the crime in their neighborhoods. They have organized block watches, citizen patrols, along with neighborhood cleanups, and started harassing slumlords that allow drug dealers to use their properties. (Brown Art. 122). Among many of the crime fighting tools, the involvement of
On August 29th, 2005, Hurricane Katrina rocked the state of Louisiana and destroyed the city of New Orleans. An estimated cost of $135 Billion US dollars was needed to repair the city. With 80% of the city completely flooded, the question of many people asked is what should be the first step of rebuilding New Orleans. Some politicians, as well as, experts suggested that New Orleans not be rebuilt at all, and questioned the worth of rebuilding the city because New Orleans is below sea level and the possibility of it being destroyed or undergoing a similar situation can occur again destroying the city. Although this was a controversial thought, the city went ahead with the rebuilding. However, numerous low-income families’ houses were destroyed and did not have the income to come back to their homes. Furthermore, a major immigration of white Americans resulted from Hurricane Katrina as rebuilding started. Rebuilding catered to white Americans rather than previous low-income citizens that were in the city of New Orleans prior to its destruction. Although New Orleans is rebuilt, serval lower-income areas that were present before the hurricane haven’t been rebuilt, or have turned into something that was unnecessary for the lower income families that needed housing. When rebuilding New Orleans, a great deal of things could have been done that could have benefited the community rather than what was done, including rebuilding lower-income residents, equal restoration to every
