Thirty-five years of policing experience in a large metropolitan police department with a tourist based economy. Retired in 2009 as the Assistant Chief of Police. Operational and Senior command experience in Administration, Patrol and Detective Divisions. Recognized internationally for training, presentations and publications in Community and Problem Oriented Policing and a wide-range of other policing topics. Retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Nevada Air National Guard. Fifteen years teaching experience as an adjunct professor at the University of Nevada, Reno. Numerous consultancies in the U.S. and abroad involving management studies, technical assistance and training. Currently assisting the U.S. Department of Justice as a Senior Police Advisor on policing reforms in Ukraine.

The reputation of the police profession is that of the 6 pillars of policing in the modern world as outlined by the President’s Task Force on the 21st Century Policing, which sought to recommend steps forward. The field of police work is constantly being forced to develop and improve its protocols, procedures, and practices in an effort to keep pace with the ever-changing society in which it operates and criminal behavior it seeks to eradicate. An examination of the patrol officer’s jobs and duties took place. The gathering of information and interviewing a seasoned patrol offer assisted in this examination. The city in which the patrol officer works is also studied. Research of the city of Hueytown’s population and history helped to understand the demographics and crime within the city. While Hueytown’s violent crimes are low, thefts and burglaries rank the highest. Communities, including the city of Hueytown, place patrol officers on the streets in order to protect and serve. People have always had some kind of enforcement of law to protect them. The police officer’s main focus is to protect the citizens they are around and serve justice to criminals that get in the way of protecting citizens. This is an interesting career choice because the people with this career have a daily duty to keep the streets safe and clean from any dangers. The topics that will be covered are the salary of detectives their main duty, the typical day they experience, years on the job that are rewarded in different ways like a new job opportunity or an increase in pay, educational requirements, and skills required.

The International Association of Chiefs of Police Research Center Board of executives, Smaller Law Enforcement Agencies Technical Assistance Program developed a New Police Chief Mentoring Project (IACP, 2013). Gathering data and researching material is very important within the criminal justice system. No matter what profession one may have within the judicial system, researching information is something that has to be done at one time or another. Within this paper I plan on discussing what I’ve learned about research for criminal justice and its criteria. Emphases of this paper are to give some informational data on police officers and why they choose protecting the community a profession.
As I begin to reflect on my 19 year law enforcement career, I am astounded at how fast it has gone. It seems like yesterday when I was pinning my badge on for the first time, proud to wear the uniform and represent the community I so proudly serve. I continue to love our profession and love to share my passion with my co-workers every chance I get. I currently serve as our department’s Director of Training. In this position, I have the privilege of welcoming brand new police trainees to our profession. To see them on day one, scared to death, and to watch their evolution to actual police officers is simply amazing.
