Crisis: The First Battle Of Germany In 1870

The Treaty of Versailles unfairly forced Germany to decimate their own army and the treaty took away some of Germany’s land. Document B states, “Germany must not exceed one hundred thousand men, including officers…” Because of this Germany was left outnumbered and suffered a maddening loss of power. Germany also lost their treasured Baltic sea port, which they relied on for different resources (Doc A). More importantly, the German citizens in that area were forced to either relocate or adjust to their new culture. Due to these forced injustices Germany started WWII.

World War I devastated Europe and brought unprecedented human suffering. There were more than 38 million military and civilian casualties: 17 million deaths and over 20 million wounded, and a toll of $186 billion in direct costs, and an $151 billion in indirect costs. [1] The allied powers negotiated the Treaty of Versailles, which officially brought the war to end in June of 1919, with very limited participation by Germany. The provisions of the treaty primarily blamed Germany for the war, and imposed unreasonable terms that were responsible for German expansion, hyperinflation, and economic downfall, and eventually led directly to World War II. The German Peasants’ Revolts were a series of revolts occurring from 1524-1526 in which peasants ran amok throughout the German states, with some groups converging on the town of Memmingen, Swabia, to form a Peasant Parliament and voice their grievances in the Twelve Articles of the Swabian Peasants. The revolts were caused by religious teachings and abuse inflicted by lords, and were responded to with support, as well as condemnation.

The German empire was growing and the separate states had joined together to make Germany very powerful. However it was Britain that was the richest nation in the world. Past wars had an effect on who was against whom and increased the tension and competition between countries which might have been unresolved. For example, in 1870 the Germans beat the French in the Franco-Prussian war which was why both countries hated each other. The results and consequences of this war was an early starting point for WWI to happen. There was economic rivalry; the rulers of other countries were jealous of Britain for being rich and powerful which led to the Germany and England having a Naval Arms race. The Great powers had left tensions high and almost to breaking point in Europe with intense competitions and power struggles.

Following after World War 1 was the creation of the Treaty of Versailles (1919), which penalized the Germans. Due to the extreme regulations placed on the Germans, Germany became aggravated and a new leader came to power, Adolf Hitler, who and restored a sense of pride and reawakened a sense of self respect. This is known as Militarism and was another main contributor to the beginning of the war. Another major cause of the war was Imperial rivalries. During this time Germany began to imperialize. Due to this imperialization competition for colonies between Britain, France, and Germany grew. Both countries came to fear the Germans growing gain of power, this same fear led to the French and British making alliances. Another important historical circumstance that led to the World War One was the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand. This was an immediate cause of the war, and triggered a series of events which led to almost every country becoming involved in the war. The First World War can only be described as having been devastating. Thanks to World War I, Europe was left in debt and largely devastated. Both sides, i.e. the winners and the losers, suffered casualties never experienced prior to the First Word War. Millions were killed and scores wounded. It is thus understandable that at the end of it all, the victors were seething with anger and seeking revenge. They sought to make those they blamed for the war as weak as possible and with this, the Treaty of Versailles was born. To date, this very treaty is regarded the major cause of the Second World War. Instead of creating peace, as it was intended, this treaty ended up triggering yet another conflict.

As a result of World War I, Germany was forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles, made to pay for the war, and had to disarm themselves, which directly led into World War II. Germany went down the tubes after they were forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles. There economy crashed and there money had just about no value. Many people that World War II was just a 20 year break from World War I. They were right because just about 20 years later World War II started. There are many things that could contribute to starting the war but these are the main point and the most recognized.

German historian Fritz Fischer argues that Germany 's desire for world power was the reason that for the outbreak of WWI. Germany had plans for a war before the crisis that occurred during 1914 and used the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand as an excuse to put the plans into effect. Germany also encouraged Austria and its war plans to provoke a crisis in which it can solve the problem that Germany would face if they went to war. This problem is called "encirclement" and Germany would face this problem if it went to war with France and Russia. By having Austria doing so it would allow Germany to dominate and expand its territories. France and Russia signed a full military defensive alliance in 1892-1895 which allowed the possibility of a two-front war. With Germany 's geographical position being between these two great powers, it would cause Germany to lose the war at an instant. What happens is because the British did not want German ships in the Mediterranean, and was afraid that Germany would going to build a fort on the coast, another conference was called, and France takes over Morocco, but as compensation, Germany was given land in central Africa. This creates animosity in Germany towards the French and the British, because Germany lost against the French, failing to protect Morocco. German imperialism, the Kaiser’s ambition of over sea empire, and nationalism, the thought of Germany being the world power, has caused militarism, expansion of her army and navy. The three elements were the causes of World War 1 but what has made the war inevitable was the alliance system that existed at that time.

So, Germany made a decision, as too much of the world had been claimed they must fight to gain countries, in order to build their much desired Empire. This lead to the war as it created rivalry between Britain and Germany, who were both powerful Empires in their own right. This meant in the case of a war between nations, such as the one which followed, these domains would be on opposing sides and would have a good motive to want to belittle the others status, Empire, National forces and wealth.
