There are multiple phases of critical thinking as described by Benjamin Bloom which include remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating and creating. The critical thinking process starts by remembering. If we can remember what we read and apply key facts we will be able to move forward to understand what decisions we need to make. Research has only one source of proof and that is the research itself (Levin, 2006). The focus of research is on whether the intervention being researched is ready to be applied to clinical practice (Levin, 2006). Evidence-Based Practice reviews and assesses current clinical practice and presents a new or improved clinical practice (Levin, 2006). Evidence-Based Practice begins by questioning a current clinical practice (Levin, 2006). The question will then help guide the reviewer to reliable research in a reputable database, to find quality evidence that will answer the clinical question (Levin, 2006). The evidence then has to be evaluated for legitimacy and incorporated into clinical practice and lastly it will be assessed to determine if it is successful and if it meets patient preference and satisfaction (Levin,
Critical thinking is the process that allows us to develop, evaluate, and reinforce the strength of our own, as well as other people’s arguments. There is the expectation for nurses to work effectively and efficiently, which can be achieved using evidence based research. The argument for medical personnel to use their own knowledge to create personalize care and treat patients is what is used in evidence based research (Hunker, 2014). The researches focus on the personalized treatments that have worked for a certain population. Moreover, the alternative to using evidenced based research, sounds like try and error which does not sound professional considering it is not supported by any evidence.
Scholarly researchers will form a hypothesis, and then while referring back to previous research or writing by other academics or scholars, conduct research on the hypothesis in order to make their information available to the rest of the scholars. Unlike scholarly research, anecdotal evidence is something that is experienced by the researcher and is not considered very reliable. According to Mossler (2014) “Anecdotal evidence is not a substitute for good research. Only controlled experimental studies can properly answer the question of cause and effect.” (p. 48)
Critical thinking is the questioning of ideas. It is the process in which you take an argument and analyze it in order to conclude whether that argument is valid. Thinking critically is a good skill that can help others make intelligent decisions and helps them understand what to believe or not believe. Critical thinking is involved in our daily life. For example, every day we make decisions and before every decision we think critically if that is the right decision. We take into consideration the possible consequences of such decision and from that we reach a conclusion. Critical thinking involves disciplined thinking and it teaches you to think for yourself. It is personal growth and confidence that results from learning to exercise your mind to its fullest potential.
The process of critical thinking requires you to ask more questions of both others and of yourself before a decision or determination is made. In order to successfully evaluate data in a critical manner, you must have a system in place to assess information as it is presented. In any situation whether you are having a conversation, observing others, or material you have read, you must be ready to probe deeper and ask the right question at the right time.
The concepts of critical thinking and creative thinking are both gaining increasing importance in the world today. Critical thinking allows people to understand difficult concepts in a manner that is clearer and more defined. They can more readily understand those concepts if they employ critical thinking. In all portions of everyday life, a person is expected to make independent judgments. Those judgments are based on experience and knowledge. Without the ability to think critically, every situation that a person comes across would have to be considered in isolation from all other situations. When a person encounters a problem that is a new one, he or she may be able to use critical thinking to solve those problems.
There are said to be six stages of critical thinking, the unreflective, challenged, beginning, practicing, advanced, and accomplished thinker. The unreflective thinker is unable to asses their thinking skills while in the second stage of challenged thinkers, they are becoming aware and figuring out problems. The beginning thinker is similar to concrete thinking, which contains no depth, it regards to the facts and thinking in the periphery. At the fourth stage, the practicing thinker is developing the knowledge for systematic practice, while the advanced thinker now has good habits and can actively analyze information. Lastly, the accomplished thinker can access their intuitiveness and take a position on things in everyday life(Edler, Paul).
