The story “Isang Tikbalang Ka Lang”. This was written by Eros Atalia and is about a tikbalang who fell in love with a human being that he eventually courted. Even though tikbalang did everything he could to make the girl happy she eventually fell for a guy who is a rich duwende. The story shows the two types of persons in this world: people who love for them to gain riches and the people who love because they see something very beautiful in the personality of that person.
Tikbalang shows us the virtue of a typical man who falls in love. He’s willing to do give anything to make the girl fall in love with him. The tikbalang gave her countless gifts of fruits but the she wanted more than just fruits because she came from a poor family and she wanted money. In the end, tikbalang’s efforts were to no avail when the girl no longer visited him and eventually he received news that the girl married an old rich duwende.

They chose men with a lot of wealth even though they’re not attractive and women like these are called gold diggers. Usually this happens with old rich men who are married for their wealth because when they die all of his possessions will automatically be entitled to the woman because this is stated by the law. Women like her want to experience a luxurious life with their rich partner, no matter what characteristics is possessed by the man.
The modern way of living is best described as a life of leisure and riches. People who cannot afford these luxuries have a hard time getting into relationships because they have nothing to offer but there love. The meaning of love has changed and no longer characterized as how much love you can give but as how much you can
The poem "A Song of Changgan" is very poignant, as it starts with a bashful girl who does not even smile around her husband and ends with her almost heartbroken, as her husband is far away. The poem shows the different stages of the relationship of the speaker and her husband, and it is an excellent example of long-distance relationships before modern communication systems.
Love throughout the years has been interpreted as an intense interpersonal attraction ("I love my partner"). Love can also refer specifically to the passionate desire and intimacy of romantic love, to the emotional closeness of familial love, or to the platonic love that defines friendship, to the profound union or devotion of religious love. Love had been defined by individuals to get close to someone who have actual feelings for or deeply care about, and one that you will actually risk your life for. But now, love has been given a bad reputation because now some people are only interested in having non-intimate sex with others. People prefer temporary relationships, instead of dedicating their lives to their loved ones. These types of
Dating back to the early 1900’s and all the way through to the present, romantic relationships have been viewed differently. From strict unwritten dating regulations to not having regulations at all, recent generations have become more liberated in making their own decisions. The progressing times have made us become a more accepting society and have caused a decrease in the strong practice of religion and class. Even though differences such as religion and class in relationships were more than an issue they were not always a complete deterrence.
Society expects people to fall in love. That is, society expects people to find a life partner, get married, and have children. Those who do not follow the pattern are generally seen as hermits who sit in their houses with multiple forms of pets to keep them company. This burden life throws at human beings growing up, turns into a moral value. People want to find someone that makes them so happy that their heart hurts when they’re not with them. This would be the case if one does actually fall in love. Love can be a wonderful thing. However, sometimes it can be a devastatingly evil form of torture. Even though it is expected to make one feel content and comforted, love can make anyone feel more alone than ever before. Love is presumed to
“You can’t blame gravity for falling in love.” This quote from Albert Einstein raises importance to the universal theme of true love. This theme can be seen in the Italian story “Poor Fish,” where the main character had low self-esteem. Later in the story, he met a girl named Ida and started gaining more confidence in himself. Another story that demonstrates true love is the Chinese “The Tall Woman and Her Short Husband.” This story revolves around the lives of a married couple in which the woman is taller than her spouse. In the story, no one believes that they are in love and they start suspecting that Mrs. Tall only married for wealth. However, in light of the tragedies that happen, true love is exemplified in the end. These stories demonstrate
In conclusion, Bernard and Kamau both do not accomplish in seeking their true love. Their financial complications made them take consideration of the future. Therefore, the standard love is equal to the standard of living. The different attitudes within the protagonists made them have a different reaction when they both lost their wives. The male or female dominated societies bring out people’s personalities and it builds a barrier on seeking true love. Both short stories discuss on how men force the situation of losing
If society was a person in itself, it would be a criminal. It has deceived human beings into believing that love is supposed to be something that is always beautiful, euphoric and extremely powerful. It pressures individuals into commitment, passion and desire while simultaneously reminding them that an excess of one thing is not good. Society need to make up its mind. As the world knows, love is not simply defined as a group of words; rather, it is many things that are rooted to deep affection. Love presents itself in different shapes, forms and sizes, but what happens to this endearment when it is one-sided? The sole attribute that every individual seek has the potential to destroy most. Unrequited love poisons the character
The ability to love is possibly one of the most recurring aspects of humanity. Everyday people fall in and out of love with each other 's personalities, opinions and lifestyle choices. In his novel 1984, George Orwell depicts a dystopian, loveless society. The technology, newspeak, and doublethink force conformity on Oceania, the setting of the book. The lack of diversity in people creates a world, where there isn’t any reason to love anyone else. Family relationships that were formerly built with love, support, and loyalty are ripped away and replaced with distrust, anxiety and hostility. Sexual relationships no longer have love or pleasure, which makes them mean virtually nothing, except the hope of
“True love is hard to find.” “Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all”. These words have been told to and heard from family, friends, co-workers and even words in a poem. (A.C. Bradley). These words are said to someone to comfort and express sympathy and understanding to one that is having a relationship issues. Only a lucky few have found true love the very first time love has entered the into their space, some have managed to remain married over forty years or more. Life’s dilemmas interfere with true love from entering the lives of the people that love has touched. Parents protecting their children, worrying about what other think, love not being reciprocated, fell in love too young, self-esteem too low, looking for
Is love always beautiful? It will be great if it is, but life is not a romantic Disney story. Do not kid yourself into believing that every love story has a happy ending, because in reality, such perfection never exists. Indeed, love can sometimes be the cause of one’s downfall by turning his or her life into turmoil. Worst, it can scarily be used to justify one’s action in harming others. In The Jade Peony written by Wayson Choy, Sek Lung informs us of the existence of a Romeo and Juliet kind of tragedy through his narration of the love story of Meiying, his babysitter to whom he looks up. This forbidden love had unfortunately caused Meiying to be a criminal because her pregnancy had given her a reason to commit a sin towards the pure-hearted life growing in her womb. In the last chapter of the book, Meiying was discovered with “[…] two long knitting needles glinting between [her] legs” (Choy 275), showing her effort in aborting her baby. Meiying has bravely decided to put an end to the life of her own child using her own two hands because of the external and internal pressures surrounding her pregnancy. Meiying thinks that her pregnancy is socially unacceptable and it clashes with her interests.
The stark divide between love and marriage shown right the way through cannot be comprehended fully by the twenty-first century reader: in today’s society marriage and love are mutually exclusive - you very rarely get one
Sociological perspectives explains love relationships as not perfect but a working progress. A commitment which relies on continuous maintenance and reassurance. Love relationship practices and investments are configured in experiences that will be shared in the past, present and in the future.
“I love you.” These three little words might possibly be the most powerful statement one can make to another person. In life, most yearn for the intimate affection that a certain someone can provide them. Women dream of their Prince Charming to come and sweep them off their feet, while men search for the love of their life that sets their heart on fire. But what happens when love is thrown around without a second thought? Has this four letter word become an overused cliché? Has love been replaced with lust? Is there such a thing as true love? This last question has been asked throughout history, while many have argued and debated over the final answer. We, as a society, have become a loveless, sex crazed group
Since these wives were basically prostitutes under the guise of marriage, many people ignored the “taboo” and “deviant” nature of this version sex industry because it was difficult to understand. Vu Trong Phung not only clarified the structure of these marriages but also brought to light the dangers to the women. While highlighting the dangers, he also criticizes his own culture for essentially providing no other options for these women and then shunning them when they had enough (14). He even further objected to the condemnation of prostitutes by equivocating marrying for anything other than love was like receiving a life-long prostitute (14). By having these eccentric stories and radical beliefs, Vu Trong Phung was able to call attention to a subject no one wanted to talk about – let alone read
Why is love so important in a person’s life? In society, love is such a vital aspect which most center their lives around. For many it is what creates meaning in their daily lives and what makes us continue to chose to live. People move across the country for love, do outrageous acts that declare their love, and spend their lives dedicating time, energy, and commitment to those they chose to love. “Love is what makes the world go round” because it is such a strong feeling of attachment we feel for our partners, children, and friends. As humans we have strong emotional needs and many make the mistake of ignoring when these needs are not being met.
