Once operations are ready to open doors for business, staff will have daily interaction with customers, vendors, and members of the community. It is important that non-verbal communications be learned and demonstrated by all staff and family members to ensure that Shell 2 Shore is both respectful and to avoid any discriminatory or offensive behaviors. Eye contact and handshakes are common in both business cultures, but regarded differently, and again, should be practiced during business interactions during and after expansion into Mexico.
In the U.S., Eye contact is considered both appropriate and expected, demonstrating both respect and confidence (Adler, 2006). This is not the case in Mexican culture. Direct eye contact is considered as both rude and aggressive, and should be maintained intermittently in face to face interactions, with focus just outside of the eyes (Adler,
2006). Shell 2 Shore’s goal during the process of the expansion efforts and during day to day operations should be to be considerate to Mexican business practices and societal norms.
Handshakes are also of different consideration in Mexican culture than in the U.S. (Adler, 2006). It is extremely important that staff are educated on this because
In the U.S., we usually stand about an arm's length away with a “hello, nice to meet you” or some sort of greeting followed by a hand shake. In Latin America, they usually kiss each other only on one cheek. But, in Spain they may greet one another with only one kiss on each cheek. This goes for friends and family. They will also stand closer than usual to us Americans but that is a cultural difference. However, some Latin American countries if the men in which haven’t seen each other in a while, they will often greet with

Although non-verbal communication is used sparingly, there are common practices that one needs to be aware of to be able to convey confidence and respect to your counterparts while working in Germany.
Cultural differences are present wherever you travel to, you will come across cultural differences, and these can vary quite a bit, such as the language people use e.g. English people say "Chips" compared to Americans who say "Fries”. A businessman may find himself in the middle of cultural differences quite often and thus, will have to devise methods as to how to make sure no one is offended or that he is fully understood. Certain methods he would use to overcome such issues are greeting people on a last name basis. Also refraining on using most signed gestures, as they can vary in meaning quite greatly, for example, the English gesture to say
Increasing productivity and sparking motivation in employees, are challenges that managers, businesses, and organizations have struggled with for centuries. While there are many beliefs about which method(s) yield the best results, and what is considered to be the desired result, a ‘one-size-fits-all’ management technique still does not exist. The current movement in psychology, called Positive Psychology, focuses on what is “right” in an individual, and not on their faults. This basic concept is starting to extend its influences into the workplace, making it seem that Positive Psychology may become the key ingredient corporate culture, and all places of employment alike, have needed to promote success and satisfaction in their lines of work.
From myths to time and punctuality, more is different than one would think. A few myths and their realities: "What works here ought to work in Mexico. " This myth is far from the
When communicating with others, it is important to consider the context in which we are working. For example, more formal language and behaviour would be used in a meeting and the school will have a range of types of planned communication with other adults – when dealing with other professionals, there will be meetings and discussions as well as more informal communication at different times. However, there are also the non-spoken forms of communication such as how quickly we respond to an email or phone message, how attentive we are when speaking to someone, how we dress. Different cultures will have their own norms of behaviour which will extend to gestures, body language and eye contact. In some cultures, for example, it is not polite
Cultural competency is an indispensable in nursing practice so that nurses can deliver optimal care for patients from diverse cultural backgrounds. Therefore, insufficient knowledge and skills of cultural competency have continued to increase racial and ethnic inequalities in health care service for minority groups (Dunagan et al. 2013; Long, 2012). As nurses interact with clients they provide nursing care, education and advocacy at any point in need. Cultural awareness remains the basis for nurses to develop interest and continue to advance in knowledge and skills to deliver culturally competent care (Calvillo, 2009). It is important to greet each member of a group individually. Women will pat each other on the forearm or shoulder as an initial greeting where men use the handshake in situations where they are greeting someone for the first time. Handshakes consist of a gentle grip and a quick sharp shake. After men develop a relationship hugs or back slapping called abrazo replace the handshake. Women will progress to a series of air kisses on the cheek. Air kissing is also the appropriate greeting between a man and a woman who know each other. The first kiss is in the air near the left cheek and the second is in the air near the right cheek. Unmarried women receive an additional kiss as a wish for marriage. Receiving an abrazo or air kiss is an indicator that you have been accepted into the group. These traditional Mexican greeting are indicative of gender characteristics. Females are supposed to act open while men are expected to act closed. Foreigners should politely accept these greetings from Mexicans but should not initiate a move from one greeting to the next. This is especially important for an American man who is greeting a Mexican female. The American man should never initiate the air kisses as it may be interpreted as sexual advance which damages the women’s honor and her partner’s machismo. Women are even expected to initiate a handshake with men. It is important to wait until invited to

When a greeting is among those of different social economic status, the person of higher stature determines the way in which the greeting is addressed. Conversations with another are set in motion with unpretentious and gracious discussions which gradually transition into the subject
The use of direct eye contact may be considered as confrontational, a sign of conflict, or as being rude.
There are times where I am taking their vitals and they look at my facial expression to see if things are okay. I smile and tell them “bueno” for good. In the Asian culture eye contact is considered disrespectful whereas in the Hispanic culture it is a sign of attentiveness and respect (Stanhope and Lancaster, 2014). I am so used to not making eye contact with people because of my culture so when I do it I feel uncomfortable almost shy. But learning this from the textbook we are reading for the course I will try to incorporate this when I am speaking to a Hispanic patient.

In the business arena it is of no concern. Nametag placement is also important so that it becomes easy to read while shaking hands. The nametag is to be placed
The various theories are providing a way for firms to understand cultural differences and address these issues. This is achieved through utilizing these strategies in conjunction with one another to comprehend the root causes of the problems and introduce solutions to them. When this happens, a neutral culture is established that is taking into account numerous traditions and theories. These different ideas are providing an avenue for dealing with the complex relationship that exists between headquarters and their subsidiaries. This is the point that everyone can communicate and collaborate on a host of issues (using a culturally neutral perspective). (Janssen 2009) (King 2009)
