Culture is the art of living and represents the values, goals, practices and shared beliefs of any country. Indian culture is traditional and yet contemporary. Indian Culture, as described as first and the supreme culture in the world by many sources is one of the world’s oldest with civilization in India began about 4500 years ago. India is a very diverse country and second most populous nation after China with more than 1.2 billion people. Indian culture is comprised of Humanity, Tolerance, Unity, Secularism and Closely knit social system. Being born and bought up in India, I am very well aware that every transaction in India, starting from Vegetable purchase, merchandise, cab fare, restaurant bills, wedding dowries are all negotiable. Out of all the few rules of negotiation we follow in India, the two I like are: True price of any item is what you pay and no matter what you finalize the deal for, if the opponent is smiling when you leave, it is not at all a good deal for you. Major companies like Microsoft (while dealing with purchase of Hotmail), Enron learnt it in a hard way on how difficult it is to negotiate with Indians. Negotiation with Indians doesn 't just mean dealing with a particular person or company for that particular deal, it is also dealing with various other factors including Coexistence of Individualism and collectivism, Idealistic bent of mind, Nationalism, Attitude towards time and hierarchical culture. Corruption, Bribery, Political instability, Rushing the business transactions are the known barriers for any negotiation in India.
