Bahamian Culture
I: Culture Culture is the norms, beliefs, language, and values that have been shared between generations. It is the way of life for a large group of people and anything associated with a society can be considered as part of its culture. There are two parts of culture, material and non-material. Material components are things such as religion, language, and values. Its things that cannot be touched. The material things of culture are the things you can touch such as clothing, art, jewelry, hairstyles, and buildings. Culture can have an influence on our everyday lives. When a baby is brought into this world they do not know a language or any ideas on religion. Our culture teaches us the values, language, and the norms we know. Today people have become so accustomed to their culture that they think there is natural. They have not experienced other cultures and have not been exposed to beliefs, values, and norms. This can upset people who are not use to a different culture. This is known as culture shock. Also with culture comes ethnocentrism. Ethnocentrism is thinking ones culture is superior to another culture. This can be a good thing while it also can be a bad thing. It can bring a culture together by creating unity within the society because everyone feels the same way. It is bad sometimes because it shuts our mind off to other cultures and might offend people of other cultures.
