The Dangers in the Food We Love The junk food we love can be so harmful to our beautiful bodies. Do you really think people make good decisions in choosing what they want to eat? Men, women and even children know the difference in foods which can affect one’s health. With no hesitation an individual will daringly eat a food without knowing the calories taken within that one burger. Within the 70’s till our generation now a person will see an image or hear someone say you will win an award for eating a 19,900 calorie burger, way more calories consumed than is supposed to. As years go by the portions of the food goes up such as the prices. Our generation needs to take consideration in our health because what we consume now, can affect us majorly in the future. 18-26 year olds have to be the ones to change what is consumed in their daily lifestyles. The average lifespan for our generation will be approximately 70 years old, shorter than the span of our parents which live up to there 100’s just because of the way us individuals eat. In The New War Of Obesity, Barry Popkin, Ph.D., notes that “taxation of sugary beverages and junk food is where we have the most solid evidence of an effect”(5). Understanding the fact that a simple canned soda can be up to 150 calories which can harmful to an individual's health. Food is an essential part of our life, to stay alive. Food is necessary for our bodies to develop, replace, and repair cells and tissues; produce energy to keep warm, move, and work; carry out chemical processes such as digestion of food; and protect against resist, fight infection, and recover from sickness. Food is made up of nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, protein, and fat. The body cannot function properly if one or more of the nutrients are missing. It has been common today to dismiss that, the earlier a person starts to eat healthy foods, the more he or she will stay healthy.

Everyone loves sugar filled snacks, especially children. A kid’s day can be made so much better just by handing them their favorite candy bar. This is something students looked forward to during their school day. Sadly, this was made to change. Schools started banning snacks, and drinks based on their unhealthy effect they have on individuals. According to Beverly Ballaro and Ann Griswold in "Junk Food in Schools: An Overview,” this change occurred when Michelle Obama launched her project for healthy eating in 2010. Let’s Move! Was her way to fix child obesity in America. This directed schools to feed children healthier options, and twice as many vegetables or fruit. This was not a necessity for public schools across the United States. Students should not be limited to what they eat in school. As long as they are being fed their basic lunch, it should not be important what they decide to snack on.

“Soda Taxes: Gaining Steam or Getting Steamrolled?” is an enticing article by Anna Gorman that focuses on the issue of taxing sugary beverages and the effect it will ultimately have on the health of the general population. She mentions that the tax could reduce the rates of obesity and diabetes in the affected areas. She also points out the counter to this claim, that soda taxes may not have any effect on obesity rates at all and may give the government too much power over the consumer choice. Overall, she seems to advocate that soda is an unhealthy beverage and should be cut down among consumers. Soda however, is not the only unhealthy options out there. There is a plethora of products on the shelves of supermarkets and sold at restaurants.
The United States is mindful of this deadly disease and the lives it has taken, yet little has been done to spread awareness and decrease the amount of sugar, carbohydrates, and fat in foods sold. If a child is constantly eating unhealthy food, rarely exercises, and is unaware of the consequences that come from the lack of living a healthy life, he or she will grow up continuing this lifestyle. O’Connor explains that, according to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, seventeen percent of American children and teenagers between the ages twelve and nineteen years old are overweight (39). Unless the child is taught about the harsh reality of eating so unhealthy, it may be too late before he or she becomes obese. Similar to tobacco and alcohol, food has addictive qualities which are hard to change. Another factor to consider involving the obesity epidemic in the United States is the expense of healthy foods. This high price hinders U.S. citizen’s ability to pay for a healthy diet. One of the many low income mothers in the United States, Maria Gonzalez, comments, “When you only have a dollar to spend and you have two kids to feed, either you go to the market and try to find something that’s cheap or just go straight through a drive thru and get two hamburgers for them and say, ‘Okay, here. One major question that is asked today is whether or not the eating habits of kids and teens be regulated by the state? This is a big problem today with young ones. Due to the fact of different types of fast food places people have available to them and the unlimited supply of options. This has lead to people making poor choices that cause problems in their lives. There are a myriad of books, articles, television shows, movies, and websites doing their utmost to inform us of how we should eat better and to stop eating foods that are known to be bad for our bodies. An article by Michael Jacobson, published on the website for U.S. News & World Report, was just such an article. In his piece “Politics: It’s What For Dinner”, Jacobson points out that we should eat healthier items, such as, fruit, vegetables, and cut back on eating fast food, processed foods, and drinks heavy with sugar. Most parents would probably want to be able to feed their families with healthier choices, if it did not cost an arm and a leg to buy healthier foods. Of course, this is easy to do for those that can afford to eat whole foods, non-processed grains, and organic vegetables. I shop frequently and usually search for fresh, healthy foods, but the costs take a huge chunk from my budget. Healthy foods are much easier to access these days, as compared to just a decade ago. Many american adult civilians are obese, the cdc states that about 34.9% or 78.6 million adults in america are obese and over 17% or 12.7 million kids from ages 2-19 are obese. Many of the causes is the overconsumption of soda. The issue at hand is that there are many obese people buying large amounts of soda in the United States. Although i don’t think soda should not be banned for consumption and it’s a freedom of choice of what people want to eat; however, the amount of soda an individual buys should buy should be regulated because, lowers the risk diabetes, lowers the risks of obesity, lowers the risks of health problems later on in life.
