To most non-volleyball players, volleyball is just a more intense version of ‘Don’t let the balloon touch the floor,’ and it does not require an abundant amount of skill. Almost everyone who has played volleyball has been told something like this at least once in their life. This can be insulting to those who are passionate about volleyball, and dedicate their time and energy to bettering themselves in the sport. Danielle Bettermann, a Penn State volleyball outside hitter, stated in one of her articles that, “The skill set that makes a great volleyball player takes many years to perfect, just the same as any sport” (Betterman 1). Volleyball cannot be learned in a day, it takes many years of practice and failure to become a great volleyball player. Even the smallest skills take ages to master. Timing is one of the hardest skills to master. …show more content…
Her approach was perfect and everyone thought she was going to get a kill. She swung at the ball, and the rest of the team watched in disappointment as the net grabbed the ball and spit it back at the player. Her swing was late by less than half a second. Less than half a second, that was the deciding factor in whether Northeast won or lost the point. Volleyball is a game of mistakes; everybody makes them. However, it is what is done to minimize the amount of mistakes made that counts. Players have to dedicate an immense amount of time and energy to become better at the sport and minimize the inevitable mistakes. Therefore, volleyball should not be seen as a game where everyone just stands around and does not let the ball touch the floor because it is an extremely difficult sport that requires skill and technique, on both the offensive and defensive side, and mental
A timeless sport filled with -- rapid movements, sweat, anxiety, and team cheering -- volleyball is a sport that many underestimate. There are countless people that say “Volleyball is a girl sport” or “volleyball is not even that hard”. Also you may come across an egotistical varsity football team that refuse to attend any volleyball games, because they are mad that varsity volleyball made it to state championships and they did not. However, volleyball is a sport that requires intense drills, training, and a strong team bond. For instance if you do not dive right when hitting the floor you can seriously injure yourself. I have had torn a ligament in my shoulder diving for the ball, because as a volleyball player you are taught to always chase after a ball even if it means running into a wall. But the best and the greatest experience of all time is when it is a game day, or even better yet the last game that can determine your title in Norcal Championships. Norcal Championship finals is the game that all 14 teams strive for during the
When first learning the different technical aspects of volleyball, I wasn’t exactly thrilled. During my first practice, I had no idea what it meant to be athletic until I realized the necessity of hustling and focusing
Every sport has their own terminology and language that only players of that sport understand. In volleyball it is important to know the terms used. The terminology that a volleyball player first learns are: pass, set, hit, kill, double, serve, and the positions on the court. Every player’s exigence for knowing and understanding the terms is for the player’s and team’s success. Without the knowledge of the terms used, a player will not comprehend what is going on, what plays are being made, or what the referees are expressing.
Ever since 8th grade, I have worked hard a lot more when I play volleyball. Right when the varsity coaches asked me to join their practice, I knew that I had to work hard and that it will pay off. Now, at every practice, I would play my heart out even if I was playing with a fractured finger or a rolled ankle.
Volleyball season had started, and that means six o’clock practices bright and early. Practice was two hours long before school. I could feel the anxiety in the gym that day; everyone was nervous, thinking about what was to come. We did not play the best that day, to say the least. We kept seeing people walking past the gym, wishing they were anywhere else. The whole team was waiting for the clock to read eight so we could rush upstairs to change. At last, Coach let us take down the nets and go get ready. Our excitement led us to break record time taking down the nets.
The objectives and learning goals used are aligned with the State Standards as listed above due to the fact that every student should be able to complete the specific skills required, and allow for teammate interaction and a feeling of satisfaction during play. This lesson is designed to introduce the skills to the students so that he/she can be more familiar with the sport of volleyball and learn that the sport can be carried on and used later in life. The main goal, however, during every physical education lesson, is to promote a lifetime of physical activity for my students. Making activities fun, enjoyable, and enthusiastic will allow them to want to continue participating for a lifetime. Previous knowledge of movement is important in physical education. Each student will be required to move during every activity he/she is involved with.
It is not that I thought it did not look fun, I just thought it looked incredibly hard, but one of my friends that I played softball with also played volleyball, but almost never had time to spare to be social. I had a thought: I could do a couple of camps and training sessions and work hard so I could try out for the team giving us an opportunity to spend more time together. I worked as hard as I could and learned so much about the game quickly. I learned more than just fundamentals, I learn lessons. One of the first lessons I learned was to work as hard as you can first so you can rest later. That is a lesson I have only just started to grasp, but it taught me so much about work ethic, and how people need to stay focus to finish their responsibilities first instead of getting behind or procrastinating. Since I had to really worked hard to excel in volleyball, I had a deeper appreciation of the game. I liked that the skills did not come to me easily. I liked being able to focus on a skill until I completely mastered it. It helped me to not to become lazy or procrastinate my responsibilities, and that dedication would help me represent my school for all the right values. I worked so hard over the years and learned one of the biggest lessons I would ever learn in life: You need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. I learned life is going to throw you situations that you will not know really
Lastly, it comes with our final pair of players: Gina Fitzpatrick and Shea Wise, a female volleyball player challenging a manpower. Shea takes the first shot, at the farthest location, he drains all of his energy and strength, then uses his right arm to throw in order to protect his dignity as a male. Sadly, not today. Then here comes our challenger Gina, she plays volleyball, so she is confident that she can win for her team, she tries to use some professional techniques, then throws, but it doesn’t go in either.
Sand stuck to her skin, sun beaming upon the court, one point away from winning another gold medal...ends the game with a hard sharp hit to right front. The intensity during volleyball games are very high, never knowing how it could end. As for the sand queen, the intensity is what she loves most. I strongly believe that Kerri Walsh Jennings is the best volleyball out there. Although she is a busy mother of two, she still manages to make the best out of her volleyball career.
One key to playing Volleyball is passing the ball. The setter does not have the ability to get the ball to the outside hitter if the passer does not have the skill to get the ball to the setter. If you cannot make good passes then there is no need for a setter. Passing is a big technique to master, so it takes practice. It is not hard, but you have to know how much force and distance the setter is and how to hit accurately approach it. If you are willing to take the time and effort to play then learning to pass the ball is just a matter of ball control, which is not a matter or skill to do, but a matter of
There is a lot of sports out here today. Most of them use a lot of equipment, and others require none. Most of them require a decent amount of physical effort. However, out of all the sports that I could choose a favourite is, volleyball. It 's a sport that has its own level
Learning how to hit a volleyball is a very important step in your volleyball career. It needs to be practiced often in order to master the approach, contact, and arm swing. It can be difficult at first, but it will get easier with more
Playing on the varsity volleyball team is an adrenaline rush like no other. To be able to play the sport you love with teammates that are like family, in front of a crowd of actual family members is the ultimate feeling. Playing is even better when you, a small town nobody, beat a ranked team in the first set. We had just beaten Humboldt 25-17 and I was on top of the world. We were playing like our lives depended on it and I couldn’t be more proud of the girls.
I first started playing volleyball at a very young age. I was in the seventh grade when my volleyball career started. My sister started playing in the seventh grade and I just wanted to follow her footsteps. My seventh grade year was ok because I had just started out and really didn’t know the game. There was A team and a B team, where A team was better than the B team. I tried my best to be on the A-team, but guess where I ended up, on the B team.
Volleyball, one of the world's greatest sports. From the hot and muggy gym, to sweat dripping down each players face, volleyball is not for the faint of heart. This sport requires a single-minded desire: to win. It takes more than just teamwork to win. Volleyball has always been one of my favorite sports. I would always meet a new friend anywhere I would go. Believe it or not these situations are how you could meet your life long best friends.
