David Comparision Today, just as Homo erectus did eons ago, modern man strives for expression through art. The evolutionary paths of man and art parallel one another; in that, the complexities, which have accompanied the millenniums, also have brought exponentially progressed forms of art. Sculpture is an art form that maintains a high quality of expression. Two examples of this are the Davids done by Michelangelo and Bernini. Michelangelo’s David and Bernini’s David represent their different time periods and artists while remaining similar.

The work shows a conflict between line and form with the muscles of the adolescent frame and the flat planes. The dynamic emotion is conveyed through the tightened muscles and wrinkles upon the face in concentration, just as those of every man before a fight (Hart 112). David’s large hands represent his strength and are characteristic of the later mannerism style, while the rest of his form is somewhat true to the conventions of the High Renaissance (Shaked 1). Michelangelo’s work embodies the influences of his time just as Bernini’s. Bernini born was in Naples in 1598 and was turned on to art at an early age by his father. He grew up with influences such as Hellenistic nudes and Classicism, but his most important artistic factor was being in Rome during the Baroque movement (Dexter 1). Bernini took a different and fitting approach to sculpting David. It was Bernini’s first major work, which he completed at the age of only twenty-one over a period of only seven months. Shakard writes, “[Bernini] depicted David as an artist (of war), using his hands as the means of his art (1). The work depicts him with his slingshot cocked back, his armor on the ground behind him because of it’s weight and his harp shrouded at his feet. Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475 in Caprese, Italy. Michelangelo was known to be one of the best artists during the renaissance. Michelangelo never was interested in school work. He was always amazed by the painters and artist that were around him. Thus, igniting the flame and desire of him becoming a painter, artist, poet and sculptor. At the age of sixteen Michelangelo sculpted two reliefs, Battle of the Centaurs and Madonna Seated on a Step. Two of Michelangelo’s famous works was the Pieta and David. After returning to Rome, Michelangelo heard about a sculpture that two other artists could not complete because of its difficulty. Because of his success with ‘‘La Pieta,’’ Michelangelo decides to take over the job. He created ‘‘David’’ in 1501 and four years later the sculpture was placed outside the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. Michelangelo’s intention was to portray ‘‘David’’as the perfect and ideal man. Michelangelo took three years to sculpt this 17 feet sculpture, and ‘‘David’’ quickly became the pride of Florence.
Significant advancements in art have been made over the last few centuries. These advancements have allowed different artists and sculptors to take their artworks to the next level. A recurring theme in Renaissance art is the sculpture David. Over the year’s artists have been able to take this famous sculpture to new heights. Although the sculptures have the same concept, they are quite different, but they do have some similar consistencies. Donatello, Verrocchio, and Michelangelo are three sculptors who were able to depict their versions of David in new lights.
The city of Florence has gone through many invaders, illnesses and many other deaths not related to the battlefield. They had survived it all they believed that they had God on their side and have always come out on top, much like the biblical story of David in battle against Goliath. This influenced Florence to take on David as their symbol and used it to portray the success of Florence. Many artists have created sculptures portraying works of David. It has been depicting it in so many different manners, that there is at least one surviving example from each major art periods. Although there are many we will only be focusing on two works of David. First is Donatello’s classically inspired youthful boy depiction of David, and the second is Bernini’s heroic warrior.
Unlike the David of Donatello, Michelangelo's David is not shown after conquering his enemy. Instead, he is portrayed as an extremely athletic and manly character; the sculpture even depicts a worried look cast upon David's face and the carved marble veins seem to pulse with anticipation as he contemplates the upcoming fight. Cast over David's shoulder is his sling, and the stone is clutched in his right hand. Michelangelo's David depicts the ideal youth who has just reached manhood and is capable of great physical and intellectual feats, which is part of the classical tradition. Bernini's David represents the Baroque time shift in art. The shift towards the baroque art period seemed to have a change within the overall narrative of the sculptures. Prior to Bernini’s version of David there existed David’s sculpted by Donatello and Michelangelo. Donatello’s David was sculpted during the time of humanism, where a large influence came from the ancient Greco-Roman culture. The overall emotion of the sculpture is soft and youthful and creates the image of David after he had beaten Goliath. There really is no distinct emotion within David himself in this sculpture. There have been many staues of David sculpted by famous artists like Donatello, Verrocchio, and Michelangelo. Bernini’s version of David and is about to begin his attack on Goliath, as he appears posing. The statue seems to be moving through space and the action suggests that the action of flinging the stone requires a lot of room around David. The statue forces the observer to look past the actual subject and focus more on the surroundings. He seems to have very muscular legs, and appears to be ready to turn and throw a stone from his sling. Because of the facial features portrayed on the face of the statue of David, it is suggested that Michelangelo sculpted David to portray him after his decision to fight Goliath was made but not before the actual battle took place. Michelangelo kept the Renaissance practice of keeping its subjects in a calm position, by depicting David’s action before the battle in his statue.
I have chosen to compare and contrast the two David's, sculpted by two different individuals, Michelangelo and Donatello. Although both sculptures look extremely different they both carry various correlations to each other. Both artist were very famous during the renaissances time period and both should be deeply appreciated for their artwork. This paper shall compare the two David's from each artist, explaining the key differences and stunning similarities. Michelangelo created a 17 foot statue, David (1504) that Bernini studied to make his own depiction of the scene. The most noticeable difference between the two is that Michelangelo’s sculpture is nude while Bernini’s is clothed to an extent. Bernini utilizes the contapposto technique in his story of David, a technique taken straight from Michelangelo. Bernini plays with the immediacy of the scene, something that he does frequently, by depicting the moment right before the climax hits, when David kills Goliath. On March 6th, 1475 Leonardo di Buonarrota and Francesca Neri had their second out of five sons in the small village of Caprese, Italy. They named him Michelangelo di Lodovivo Buonarroti Simoni. But soon after being birthed Michelangelo moved to Florence, Italy with his family.
His arms are slightly long for his body, and the muscles not as developed as those of a man. His waist is small, and the form of his ribs is sculpted enough to know that he is lacking muscle definition. His stomach seems to pop out a little bit, perhaps suggesting the "baby fat" that he has yet to work off. He has one hand resting limply on his hip, while his other rests on a sword handle. His hair is shoulder length and slightly untamed, while a hat rests slightly tilted atop his head. His head is tilted slightly downward, and a slight upward bend in his lip looks almost like a building smile. One leg is straight, supporting his weight, while the other is propped on the head of the slain Goliath. The bends of his limbs are very natural, and the attention to detail exemplifies Donatello’s understanding of human anatomy. A closer look at the sculpture, however, reveals the details that set it apart from other works of the master.
Throughout the history there has been major events that occurred which left an impact for generations. A major history that was recorded in the bible was “King David”; base on our understanding of history David was once just a normal shepherd until King Saul the former ruler of Israel appointed him as the new air to the throne. In the present year David is known as the slayer of Goliath killing him with stones he put in his sling and cutting of his head. This event was printed as a biblical history because it is said that before he became King, “God gave Saul the position to become the first emperor of Israel, but after disobeying god’s words he was rejected from the throne” . David became the symbol of Florence, many artists have done sculptures of him and two of the best artists were Michelangelo and Bernini. These two were talented of creating sculptures inspiration of David; although the subjects are the same their style of sculpting is different. There were other artist whose done sculpture of David, but by far these two were the best, in my opinion.
