It was a few days before thanksgiving, my mom decided that we should volunteer downtown at the food drive to help people who didn’t have enough food for the holidays, selfishly didn’t want to, and I thought there are some many better ways to spend my weekend than at a soup kitchen. I begged and begged to my mom if I could stay home or do something more fun, she refused and lectured me about helping people less fortunate than myself and how much it can change people’s life, I recently agreed.
When we arrived at the food drive, it was packed full of people, from old men to children, waiting for food and plenty of volunteers due to the upcoming holidays. As I entered I prepared to help however I could. I served food for hours to people and they all were very appreciative and spoke about this will be their only meal today. I continued to serve food to everyone then suddenly I saw a family approach, a girl who looked about my age came with her mom and little sister up to the serving area and I immediately took notice to them. I

I approached her and started a conversation, she told me her name was Valentina and she was 15, immediately I noticed her bubbly personal, she was smiling big, I sat down and we started talking, she told me that she was from Kentucky, and that she moved here with her family, she told me her mom was looking for a job and her father died when she was younger. We talked about celebrities we love, our favorite songs at the moment, and everything in between. I didn’t want the conversation to end, so I took a risk and asked for her email, she gave it to me and told me she didn’t use it much but she would email me back whenever she had the chance. After that day I emailed her and just watched for a response. I didn’t expect anything, but little did I know the girl at the food drive would become my best
My mom was recently going through a financial struggle. Her and her husband were going through a rough patch in their marriage, so they took a break. She was living alone and unemployed. I felt like I had a responsibility to help out since I'm the oldest child, but there wasn’t much I
My parents have taught me to be very open to new opportunities and kind to everyone. My mom in particular always showed me that I always have a voice in all situations. When I was ten years old, I went out to eat with one of my friends and her mother. Our waiter, who was a man, brought out my kids meal of chicken tenders with ranch sauce. A look of disappointment overcame my face when he set the plate down in front of me, as I had ordered barbecue sauce. My first instinct was to look at my friends mom and get her attention before the waiter left our table. When she noticed I had the wrong dipping sauce, she told me to wait until the waiter left then gave him a smile as he continued to serve our food. I assumed that she would call him back over to fix it, but I had overestimated her comfort with
My mother worked day and night so I had to care for my sister and cousins. On some occasions I had to help my mom clean houses to earn money. At the age of thirteen up until I was sixteen I was cleaning houses for the people we longed to be. I got a glimpse of a life I have never known. For the most part my mom’s boss was nice, but her family was ignorant at times. They would ask me where I have traveled and if I’ve been to all these kinds of expensive places. When I answered no they asked why not. I guess they didn’t comprehend the fact that my mom and I were cleaning their dishes and making their beds for less than the minimum wage to be able to barely afford the rent of the small room we all
As I grew and became more knowledgeable and I have a clear view of my morals toward life, helping people become more frequent for me. This is a story that happened to me not very long ago when I was a freshman at collage. One of the most thing I hate to see happening anytime and anywhere is people mistreating someone that is homeless or in need. once when I was just walking by down the street just a few minutes after sunset to get I some fresh air. And I saw from a far a group of young teens gathering around a small corner down the street and went to see what was going on? To see them around this poor person that seem very weak and vulnerable. Forcing him to act in a very disrespecting manner for a very small amount of money. The instance that I saw that I was filled with rage and anger and wanted to jump in and stop what was happing to that man. But they were a group and I was alone so this meant I am outnumbered and would be over whelmed. Even though all of that was true I headed striate for them with a mad face and a tight fist and with no hesitation I shouted to leave that man alone. And all their attention went to me as that shout startled them, they stud there for a moment but as I kept on getting closer they would spread further and further and when I got to them they started acting all innocent. I told them with a stern voice to leave this man alone and never do what they were dong again. I would have
I was so nervous, I kept mapping out the exit plans in this room. I didn’t want to be there because I had just got heaps of new toys. We hosted two wonderful ladies named Dolly and Betty. We made a desert and decorated the table while the shelter provided the Christmas dinner. As I sat there, I was just counting hours, eating my food, and dreaming about which toy I was going to use first. As boredom overtook me, I began to listen to the conversations at the table. Dolly was a woman who had been homeless for 6 months. Her husband had died and he was the main source of income, so without his money she had lost her home. She had just started the Bridge to Life program that helped homeless people get their life back on track. Through 10 months of different steps, the shelter helped get them a job and pay off debts while housing and feeding them. As I heard this, I began to realize that some homeless people were not just druggies. They were people that had stories. They had fallen on hard times and couldn’t get back on their feet. I could feel myself soften and become more interested in what was happening with them. I began to ask questions and Dolly told it like it was, without sugarcoating the cold hard truth. I felt guilty for previously complaining about not being able to play with my new toys and these people didn’t even have a home much less security like I did. I had such a perspective shift the next year I asked to serve on Thanksgiving. We volunteered to be servers and take the shelter occupants’ order. We then got the food and served it to them like a five-star restaurant. As I served more people, I began to see the gratitude and thankfulness in these people’s heart. I tried to locate Dolly but she had done so well in the program and moved out in her own house. Hearing about her success
Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks for all of our rights and the things that we have. We are very thankful to come home every day to a nice home with food and water, some people don’t have the nice things that we have. The rights that I am thankful for as a citizen of this country are the freedom of religion and the freedom of speech.
A day before Thanksgiving in 1971 a guy that called himself Dan Cooper boarded the NorthWest Airlines on flight 305. He was in a wearing a dark suit with a black business-like tie. While Dan was in the airplane he opened a brief case and showed the flight attendant a bomb. When the plane landed in Seattle, Dan demanded $200,000 in cash, four parachutes, and food for the crew. He let the passengers off the plane but left three pilots and a flight attendant on board. The crew in the airplane headed South of Seattle while it was dark and drizzling. 45 minutes after takeoff Dan sent the flight attendant to the cockpit while he was putting on the parachute. Dan also tied the money to himself and lowered the back stairs and somewhere in Portland
It was a few years ago, and I had gone grocery shopping with my mother. I’d always shop with her just so I could get out of the house, walk around, and pick out food that I wouldn’t have thought of for the grocery list. My mother was a conservative person. She had grown up on a farm in a small town where change would least occur. She was a spiteful person whose insecurities led her judgments. Despite her animosity to most things, she would tell me stories to inform me on matters she finds important, like how much money I should save for a car, or how she earned a high credit score. On our way home from the grocery store, she decided to tell me a story she heard from her coworker.
Thanksgiving is an important part of our history. This picture was taken in autum of 1621 at the first Thanksgiving dinner. The event was located in southeastern Massachuchutes and eastern Rhode Island. The piligrams are the people who ran this event. They celebrted this for their religion. They did this particular holiday to celebrate the colonys first successful harvest. Piligrams are the English colonists. They are people who travled very far to find a "holy place." The newly arrived Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians gathered at Plymouth for an autumn harvest. In this day it was a three-day traditition. As you see in te picture, food is being brought out. Food is being served and their are many jars or containers. We have
We finally found a place to park and I jumped out of the truck into a mud puddle that was just deep enough to add some icy slush to the inside of my ankle boots. We walked up towards the dining hall and noticed there was quite a line of people. While standing and waiting, a grumpy volunteer as old as the church was asking people how many were in their group, taking names and telling the children to calm down or they wouldn't get any pie. Perhaps she thought she was being cute but she was scaring peoples kids.
Every Thanksgiving is followed with a holiday of its own and America calls it, Black Friday. This year Black Friday occurred on November 25 and is followed by Cyber Monday, a phenomenal worldwide online sale that took place on November 28. Black Friday is important because it marks the beginning of the holiday shopping and is a crucial day of the year for the U.S. economy. It also marks the day when retailers advanced into profit, or “the black”. Black Friday is the day when many consumers like to purchase goods and services for their loved ones at cheaper prices for the upcoming festivities. Similar to Black Friday, Cyber Monday is also paramount for customers because shopping online is much faster and more reliable for those who can not wait
As time went on I watched the sun fall behind the horizon, landscaping the sky different shades. My dad was exhausted of driving so we stopped at a hotel. Keep in mind we've been driving for 9 hours and we have yet to arrive to the destination. The next morning we woke up at 5am to get back on the road. I was nervous and excited to meet family I've never met before. 11 hours later i finally hear my parents say we have arrived. I looked around and I could see kids running towards the car, the smile on their faces were priceless they were so happy to see us. It was like we were famous or something. For a second I was getting a little overwhelmed. They looked different they weren't wearing what “regular” kids wear. They were wearing the complete opposite. Not to mention some of them didn't even have shoes. I didn't understand why. We got off the car and said hi to everyone then my parents gave out everything they had gathered and seeing the kid's faces light up when they would receive something just shocked me I didn't think they would react the way they did. They were so thankful and so happy with what they got. I didn't understand why they were happy to receive used clothes or used things in general. As I kept looking around, the houses looked different from how mine looked. As we went through a gate my father said “This is your grandpa's and grandma's house it's where we are going to be staying.” I couldn't believe how different the
It took me eighteen years to spend some quality time with my mother and discover what an incredible journey she has had with my brothers and me. She is the kind of person who has always been very involved with all parts of our daily lives. In fact, she was the kind of mother who always had time for her three sons, worked full-time and had time to devote to community projects too. Her energy and enthusiasm for all of these things seemed endless and she always tried to teach the three of us to see the value in the idea of giving back to the community. I was always glad that she was present at my games and supported me through school, but it took me over a decade to learn what motivated her to be so
It was 10 years ago, when I was just a little boy. At that time, my mom had so much work at her office and she just couldn’t come back home until 9 p.m. In my family, my mom was the only one who could prepare food and cook. So when she called my dad and said that she couldn’t come back home early to cook a meal for me and my father, we thought that we were having the biggest problem in
After Christmas, Russ and I were scheduled to meet up with our RV group for New Years, at an RV park, located on the way back to Tucson, and celebrate. The day we left to meet up with them, Russ asked if I minded just driving home! That was the last time we used the RV. We didn't go away for our anniversary, as planned, despite the fact he had always wanted to go to Camp Pendleton's RV park, on the beach. In fact, the RV was sold by the end of February. Apparently, Russ realized what I'd been worried about the whole time—the driving, set up/tear down, and maintenance was tiring him out to the point of not being able to function. Even though I was never a fan, I'm still sad that he had to give up the RV.
