Every one easily forgot about the dead and dying and went on with life because the Jews knew it was inevitable at the camps. The memoir Night by Elie Wiesel recalls Elie’s experiences at the German concentration camps. Elie started as an innocent young boy who went to church every day. After the camp Elie had gone through major changes. As the years go by Elie's faith weakens because of the horrible things that surrounded him.

The human condition is a very malleable idea that is constantly changing due to the current state of mankind. During this time, multiple groups of people, most notably European Jews, were persecuted against and sent to horrible hard labor and killing centers such as Auschwitz. In this memoir, Wiesel uses complex figurative language such as similes and metaphors to display the theme that a person’s state as a human, both at a physical and emotional level, can be altered to extreme lengths, and even taken away from them under the most extreme conditions.

“To live is to suffer, to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering” (Nietzsche). This quote, said by the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, describes the desire to survive that was inside of Elie Wiesel in his story. The book describes Elie’s late teen years when he was sent to a concentration camp by the German government. In the book, he is separated from his whole family except for his old father, and both are put to work inside of the camp. As Elie suffers through the camp, his faith and his life face many tests and trials. There are many instances throughout the book when people die or when somebody loses their faith. All of the pain that Wiesel saw inspired him to keep watch and tell stories for people who wouldn’t live on to tell them for their own families. Stories are what keeps a person alive and through Eliezer’s words that he puts down many are able to get a sense of closure in knowing what occurred at these camps. One story occurred on the first train ride away from home, a lady named Madame Schächter was beaten up for crying out against imminent death, unseen by others.

In Night, the point Elie Wiesel is making about survival is disheartening, giving examples of what people will do to survive and their every man for themselves mindset. While fighting to survive, numerous animalistic instincts control every aspect of how a person thinks. Moreover, these instincts make you think you must do whatever you can to survive, regardless of who you are harming in the process. Night gives an excellent example of the concept that family and friends do not matter when it comes to life or death, people with this mindset will do nearly anything to live another day. Nevertheless, there are many instances when the survival mindset is strictly internal, pushing them further than they thought they were capable of.

The holocaust is a time where people threw Jews out of their home and started killing them, for no reason. The book Night by Elie Wiesel is about a Jewish family getting sent to a concentration camp. The Wiesel family only knows one house. They get thrown out of their own house, sent on a long journey, just to be set up to die. But, out of a family the family, only 1 survives. But, he has to go through the time of thinking of that his family had died. Family is something many people take advantage of, but Elie now understands that family is important because he lost his Mom and sister at an early age, his father died before he got to say goodbye, and when you lose family members, you have thoughts that there is no reason to do anything.

It was in Auschwitz during 1944, at the time of arrival about midnight when the smell of burning flesh saturated the air. There was an unimaginable nightmare of a truck unloading small children and babies thrown into the flames. However, this is only one event in this entire tragedy of events to be remembered in order to understand how deeply literal and symbolic the book entitled Night by Elie Wiesel is. The novel brings light to the reader about what the Jews faced while in the fire, hell and night; nonetheless, the author portrays each and every day during this year as a night in hell of conflagration. "Were this conflagration to be extinguished one day, nothing would be left in the sky but extinct stars and unseeing eyes." (Wiesel 20). When Wiesel arrived at the camp he counted the longest dreadful ten steps of his life; he realized that his nightmare has just become unimaginable.
